Oh, it might be cause the lid doesn't pressure the picture down well that the gray spots appear.

Yeah......Not that I can much fix the problem.

I have to basically put four textbooks on the thing to get any non-grey area's at all.

Its a butt seriously......I just need to break down and buy a new one.

I understand. We have the same problem with our scanner and it's best to put heavy books on it or keep the lid closed yourself. Getting a new scanner is definitely a good. Cause once it goes bad, its just too much fuss. xD
