This is a 1x1 role-play between Typically Untypical & Precarious Fool

---------- Post added 05-20-2016 at 07:53 PM ----------

One. Two. Three. Four.

She counted the tiles on the ceiling as she had done a hundred times before, what else was there to do when you are trapped inside a cell, given no form of entertainment. “8743, get up, it’s time to do your job.” She stood. “Erika, my name is Erika.” She said as she stood up, walking towards him. Normally she would be sold on a job but she knew that today was her day to bring water for the others to get washed. Starting from the beginning, all the way to the last girl. She walked down the hallway, listening to the other girls. Some where singing, others were counting, still others were crying out for help, but they would soon know that help wouldn’t come, it was best to accept fate and learn to live with it. Still, wasn’t she rebelling by refusing to forget her name?

“Alright, here 8743, you know the drill, no funny stuff or we will put you in the electric chair.” And for a girl who controlled water that really was a threat.

“Yes sir.” The room was dark, with just the single light over head as the first girl was led in. “Please strip down.” Erika said as she pulled water from the well, floating it in the air. It looked crystal clear and Erika did her best to warm it just enough that it would be comfortable. The least she could do for the other girls was allowing their once a week shower to be enjoyable.

Alena wasn't even sure she could move at this point. For a week straight, dawn til dusk, she had been forced to heat the furnaces for the guild. With a dozen blacksmiths at work the forge had been expanded and it took twice the work to keep it heated, yet they still expected just one of them to do it. She couldn't stop of it would cool too much and it would take extra work to get to going again. She was to have a break today, only because the evening before she had collapsed from heat and exhaustion. She would pay for that, she already had, the bright red welts on her back proof of that.

It took what little energy she had to trudge down the cold hall, her feet bare on the stone floor. "Get moving!" A rough voice sounded behind her and she struggled to pick up the pace. Soon enough she was led into the near empty room, another girl already there, the one who would control the water. She said nothing as she removed the threadbare shift she wore, dropping the rather dingy garment to the ground in the corner. Her once blonde hair was now grey with soot, the strange stuck together from the days of sweat as she worked. Her hands were practically black, the same with her feet, most of it a stain that would never come off, a constant reminded of her job, her only purpose in life now. "I'm ready." She mumbled, it wasn't often she talked and her voice sounded foreign to her.

The guards did not stay in the room, if only for the fact that they did not want to be tempted to touch one of the girls. A guard had once raped a girl, not once, not twice, but every night for two years. The girl committed suicide and the company lost a huge profit from her. She had been a fire power like the girl who had just walked in. She had also been Erika's friend, in a way. The guard who had committed the act had been tortured and put to death quietly, but rumors still flew. No guard wanted to repeat that, so baths were the one time that the girls could relax a little, speak out of turn, and say what they wanted. Still, so many had been abused to the point that they no longer tried.

Erika took pleasure in this time though, she knew she would be exhausted after this but she reached out her hands, cold water, almost as cold as ice, pressing against the welts on Alena's back as soothing warm water rained down on her, cleaning the ash out of her hair, washing away the parts that could be washed away. Erika frowned in concentration as she attempted to also clean Alena's clothes at the same time. Three things at once was a little harder when they all required different temperatures and techniques. After a little time the water stopped and fell to the floor. "I'm Erika." She said softly. "I hope that helped a little bit." Her voice was low, as if whispering a secret message. There was a tenderness in it but at the same momentary flash of frustration. She wished she could spend hours cleaning this girl's hands and feet, but she just didn't have that time.

The relief she felt from the water was enough to make her sigh, she felt like she was nearly floating, even though her feet ached. If only this could last... Like the memories from when she was younger, sinking into the large wooden tub filled with hot water, the lavender scent her mother loved still came to her as she recalled that moment. Those days were long gone, she had been here for years now, barely remembering much more than her name and how to control fire, something she once thought to be a blessing. Wet strands of her hung limply on her shoulder, she could see the pale blonde colour once more. Oh how she wished she had a brush, though it was probably too tangled to even be saved.

"Uh... Alena." She said, her voice hoarse from not being used much. "Thank you..." She mumbled, struggling to stand on her feet any more, her body too relaxed to do so. She looked at her hands, her fingers stained black. It was a combination of the soot in the forge and the overuse of her fire. "I can barely feel them..." She muttered to herself, attempting to flex the dark digits but they hardly moved. She didn't need much movement to control the basic fire it took to heat the forge, but she wondered how long before her hands ceased to work all together and she would be disposed of. Tomorrow she would be forced to work once more, and worked until she was too tired to do so anymore, it was an endless cycle that she grew tired of. She wanted to punch something, anything, yet she couldn't even make a fist. "I can't do this anymore." She said to herself, forgetting about Erika being in the room.

Erika knew that feeling all to well, the desire to leave all of this behind. Her work was more mentally exhausting then physically exhausting, it meant she could be beaten until she couldn't stand and then work at her full potential the next day. Erika stretched, going to get Alena's clothes, bringing them to her. "It only gets worse, but escaping means death. Just be aware of it if it's something you plan on trying." Erika knelt down and handed Alena her garment. "My number is 8743 if you ever want to find my room." She said softly. "I would be more then happy to try to leave this place to, it's not a life worth living if it's a life of emptiness."

She took Alena's hands, smiling softly, but Alena would have to leave now. The next girl was coming in soon.

Alena was surprised, no one was ever willing to leave, to try even, because Erika was correct, it would mean death if they were caught, if they failed. Yet how could they escape? The guards would stop them, surely, they were always under watch. She took the clothes from her, tugging on the wet fabric, it felt cool against the welts on her back. While she didn't have to work the forge tonight she had to help serve the evening meal, which would mean standing on her feet once more. Perhaps she could rest before then...

She could heard the guard ordering about another girl, the next in line for their shower. "Thank you, again." Alena mumbled before she hurried to the door, waiting to be escorted back to her cell. Once finally back, she crawled onto the broken cot, it creaked and groaned as she adjust her weight. She was not looking forward to serving, since she also would have to serve the guards, who always drank too much and said rude things. They hadn't attacked her, but it was still unnerving, she hated how they'd drink to excess, enjoying their time while the girls ate their bland meal, too sore from the day to do anything.

She didn’t fear being turned in, talking about escaping wouldn’t kill her, instead they would just beat her within an inch of her life. She could survive that though. Erika nodded to Alena and pulled the water back to her so that she could start again. She was allowed 3 minutes for each girl, but even then that was only 20 girls an hour and there were about 100 girls in this work house. She would be late for dinner.

As Erika finally made it to dinner she sat down, eyes closed as dinner was placed in front of her. She had to eat but her mind was so tired, she barely had the energy to reach up and grab her spoon to eat the slop they called food. She carefully began to eat it. Her mind was so sapped from this work but subconsciously she still looked around for Alena. It would be nice to have someone to listen to, something to focus her mind back on to feel like she wasn't drowning in her own thoughts.

Despite having the day off, even just serving the food had her hands shaking, the heavy ladle taking what little energy she seemed to have left. It took far too long to get the girls served, which only happened after the guards had been. Now that everyone was eating she was allowed to have a bowl herself. SHe tried to control the trembles as she walked with the bowl, not wanting to spill her meal, knowing they wouldn't let her get more.

Her eyes fell on Erika, the kind girl from earlier, a space open beside her. Alena's bowl clattered as she set it on the table, a bit of the watery slop spilling but she didn't care. After sitting down she leaned towards her bowl, looking as if she was going to eat. "I've been thinking... about what you said earlier..." She started, just barely above a whispered, she didn't want the other girls to hear, or the guards to think she was up to something. With a flick of her wrist she motioned towards the guards, who were all on their second or third cup of ale. "They drink a lot." She pointed out, hoping the girl would get her meaning. Perhaps with them otherwise occupied, they could... Well, she wasn't sure if they could even really get out, and where they would go. Yet she knew that if she stayed her much longer she would soon be dead.

Erika wanted nothing more then to rest her head on the girl’s shoulder when she sat down next to her but she knew that signs of affection like that wouldn’t be appreciated, so instead she slowly ate her food, spacing out a bit. She barely heard the words Alena spoke to her, and even when she did it took a few moments to process them. Pushing through the muddled thoughts of her head Erika tried to form a plan. “Can you survive one more day?” She had a plan but needed to be able to control her powers and right now she simply couldn’t, her work had been to exhausting.

“On any other day I could separate the alcohol and the water, making them drunk quicker.” She whispered softly, not looking at Alena but also not trusting that their voices were low enough. “Do you knew morse code?” It was an extremely archaic form of communication, but it could be useful if they used it right.

Could she survive one more day? Probably, hopefully... One more day wouldn't be all too bad, she thought. "Yes, one more day..." She muttered, before spooning the cold slop into her mouth. No one seemed to notice them talking, but she couldn't risk it by looking over, despite the fact that she wanted to see a friendly face, even if for a moment.

All Alena could do was shake her head. Morse code? She didn't know what that was, what it could mean. She knew how to speak English well enough, but she didn't know her letters, had never had a chance to learn them, was that a part of it? "The back halls are always dark and empty." She remembered how she had been forced to go through them, occasionally, they covered the whole building, usually used as shortcuts by the guards. Often she was forced to go light the fires in their hearths and they had taken her through there a time or two. She had never liked it, it scared her being alone with the guards in a dark hallway, but when she had tried to use her fire to light the way she had been slapped. Though now she knew the way, even in the dark, to the guards quarters, as well as the door they used to come and go.

“Alright, we have a way to distract the guards, we just need a way to run from this place, and also a way to get these collars off. “It think your fire power could be useful.” She yawned, closing her eyes for a second and then shaking her head, trying to wake herself up. “How accurate is your powers?” She asked, a bit grammatically incorrect but that was to be expected when they all got only a small education.

Soon they would have to go back to their rooms. Erika was working tomorrow’s meal which would make things a whole lot easier. She liked days where she was delivering the food. The physical exercise left her mind sharp and it made it easier for her. They would be able to escape together, she had to keep remembering that. If she remembered that then maybe it would be true. Maybe they would actually be able to escape. Erika carefully pulled water out of her soup, cooling it down before having it rush up Alena’s back to cool down her welts. “We have to separate now.” Dinner was done.

"Accurate?" Alena mouthed, a bit confused. It sounded familiar, but.. Oh! Could she hit a target? "I can hit a target." She whispered, hoping that was what she meant. The cool water on her back surprised her and she gasped, it had been unexpected but welcomed. It had been so long since she had a friend, someone who cared about her, it felt nice, but she knew not to get too comfortable, things rarely worked out for her.

With dinner done she could say no more, she only hoped that they could come up with a plan and leave. She wanted to be free, to not work all day, most days, using her powers until she collapsed from exhaustion. Disappointment filled her as they were ushered from the dining room and back towards their cells, another cold, lonely night in the dark. Once back in her room she climbed on her cot, the broken frame creaking as she did so. Scrapes of metal bars and whimpers echoed off the walls, the nightly lullaby. Though tonight she couldn't sleep, not as her mind was filled with what it would be like to be away from this place, to have freedom... well, unless they were caught and brought back here. Surely it would be much worse for them then, if they were even allowed to live after that. Yet it seemed worth it.

Morning came much too soon, as did the call for her to go to her place at the forge. Her back still hurt, her hands shook as she had to work to control the fire. It was the beginning of the day and already she felt weak, tired... How could she stand all day? A whip cracked and she felt the sting as it hit the back of her thighs. She stumbled but felt more awake, the fire growing hotter. She just had to make it through the day...

As Erika was led to her room she went to her bed and collapsed. Her head hurt so much from that but she knew that it would all be worth it. Escape awaited them, wether it be true escape, or the escape of death. She didn’t mind dying, it would be better then the hell that she had to go through her. Finally, escape was in sight. She closed her eyes and quickly fell asleep.

Morning came all to early, she was being ushered outside to a rich woman’s house. She was to spend the day purifying the water and preparing warm bathes for all of the woman’s family members. It was long and boring. This was easy compared to some of the other things that Erika had had to do. She was there all day until the woman was satisfied. Jobs like these brought the work house a lot of money so the guards were in good spirits. They would drink a lot tonight, and that would help her.

Immediately as they got to the work house she was led to the kitchen, forced to help make the soup and also plate it so that she could deliver it to the other girls. She passed out plate after plate. Having to return again and again to give the guards cups of alcohol that had been made stronger by taking out some of the water. Erika wanted this. She hadn’t realized just how much she wanted this. Now that it actually felt possible she was all fired up. Finishing she sat down next to Alena. “They should be pretty drunk by this point, we should try to escape when they usher us back to our cells.” She said softly.

All day she had struggled to keep the forge hot enough, the whip meeting her skin each time she stopped. She hadn't wanted to stop but her body was tired, her mind distracted. If they didn't escape tonight she didn't know how she's survive. Her legs hurt, the skin covered in red welts from the whip. They never did it hard enough to break the skin, no that would risk infection and she would not be able to work for longer.

It felt like ages before she was returned to the work house and allowed to sit for the evening meal. As she picked at the soup she watched Erika, wondering if they were still going to try it, were still going to attempt something that could cost them their lives. She was willing, she wasn't even scared, she just needed this to work. The guards seemed to be drunk much quicker Alena noticed, she figured Erika had something to do with it, all a part of their plan.

"Tell me what you need me to do..." She whispered, not taking her eyes off her bowl of soup. She didn't want to alert the other girls, they would probably tell a guard their plans in order to gain some favour of sorts. Of course she felt bad, leaving them all behind, but they'd never be able to get everyone out and a lot of them wouldn't leave anyways, they had been here too long, lost their will to do anything else.

Dinner was over quick, the guards were escorting girls away, struggling a bit in their inebriated state. Alena looked to Erika, daring a glance at her to assure herself that they could do this.

Erika kept silent about her plan, if anyone heard it would be over before it all started and they would both be beat with in an inch of their life. Instead as they were being ushered away she too Alena’s hand, holding it tight and when she saw her opportunity she pulled the two of them into a shadowed corridor as the guards passed them by, shoving the rest of the girls. “We have to hurry.” She whispered. “Do you have any idea how to get out of here?” Erika had never been down the guards quarters. It was less guarded and probably easier to escape from. She had only even been led out the front gate when she was taken on jobs, but there were so many guards there, many of which would have their meals later and so had not gotten drunk.

“We have to hurry before they notice there are two missing. Its possible in their drunken state they won’t notice but I don’t want to count on that.”

Alena followed, squeezing Erika's hand, waiting for the right moment. When she was shoved into the dark corridor she kept silent, waiting for the others to pass. When the noise of them passing stopped she turned to Erika, "I know the way..." She said in a whisper, pulling her along, squeezing her hand as she did so. More than enough times she had taken this path, she did it in the dark, afraid her powers would give them away if a guard was around.

Her legs burned, she wanted to stop, to rest, but she knew they couldn't. At this point she was stumbling along but she continued on. Had she mad the right choice to go left instead of right? She wasn't sure, but then she felt a cold breeze, the night air hitting them. If the door was open, that meant a guard would be there... Her fears were confirmed as she heard the laughter and conversation of what sounded like two guards just outside the door. "What do we do?"

Erika froze. She had known this was a possibility but she hadn't really thought it all the way through. She tapped her fingers against her leg, looking at the floor, though she could barely see anything through the darkness. "We have to kill them." Her voice was barely a whisper. "They are in the way of our freedom. We have powers and they don't, they only keep us submissive with threats and these collars on our necks. Can you melt the collar?" Erika squeezed Alena's hand. "Can you get the collar off? If you can then we have the advantage in this fight." She listened carefully, it was raining out side. "We definitely have the advantage." But honestly she was scared. With this collar on they could easily be subdued and dragged down to the torture room where they would be punished. She didn't want to go back to her cell, she wanted to live!

Could she get the collars off? She had never tried before, but if this was their only chance of escape, she would have to. First she put her hand around her collar, squeezing it tight. The material heated up quickly under the fire she controlled, she could feel her flesh burning as well, but it was worth it if she got it off. Just when she thought she couldn't take it anymore the collar came apart, nearly dropping to the ground, but she managed to catch it, afraid of the noise if would make.

The skin felt blistered and raw, but she didn't let Erika see that. With her other hand she grabbed Erika's collar, heating it until it fell apart in her hand. "Let's get out of here..." she whispered, ready to do whatever it took to be free now that they were so close.

The pain was more then she imagined it would be but she had felt worse. Tears came to her eyes briefly but she refused to let the pain overwhelm her, they could have pity on themselves when they were safe but for now they needed to fight.

"Do you smell that?" Asked one of the guards. "Smells like barbecue." They both knew dinner was over and Erika looked to Alena. The sound of one person's foot steps began making their way towards them, Erika wasn't close enough to the rain to take out the guard still by the door, and definitely not the one walking towards them. Alena would have to take care of this first one, even just knocking him out.

"Take care of him and I'll get the other." She said as she pressed herself against the wall, taking the collars from Alena. They were still burning hot, this was useful, they could be used as weapons.

Alena heard the voices and footsteps but she didn't panic, there was no time for that. It was between them and the guards, and she wanted her freedom after coming this far. She nodded at Erika, she didn't know how, she wasn't sure she could actually kill someone, but she would stop the guard, however she could. Hopefully.

What could she do? She had fire powers, sure, but they might make him cry out, scream, and they would be in trouble then. How could she stop him? She clenched her fists, the pain great with the blisters coating her skin. "I have to kill him..." She whispered, knowing it would be the only option. She stood in the shadows, at the back, waiting. When he took just two steps past her she jumped on his back, throwing a blistered palm against his mouth. Before he could scream, or rip her hands away, his face light up from the inside, her fire being forced into his mouth, the only sound muffled screams. He clawed at her arm, his thick nails digging into the skin but she didn't stop until she felt him weaken, his body collapsing to the ground as she fell with him.

When she pulled away her hands were shaking, and she shivered. She had done it...

There was no time for Alena to focus on what she had done, Erika grabbed her hand and yanked her up, running towards the other guard. He had heard the thud and was coming to investigate. This time it was Erika’s turn to do what she must. She smelt the fresh air, heard the water, and letting go of Alena’s hand, slid under the guard’s feet to knock him down. She then rose her hands, pulling the water to her as she covered the guard’s head, his screams muffled by the water. He struggled but nothing he did stopped the water from drowning him. She hardened her heart, her silhouette framed by the moonlight as she watched him stop fighting. She knew if she pulled back now he would live. He would be unconscious and out for a long time, there would probably be brain damage but he would live.

She stopped. She couldn’t bring herself to kill him. She thought she had been prepared but she wasn’t. Erika found Alena and grabbed her hand, dragging her out the door as they ran, trying to find the shadows to hide in, but first a deep breath. Even if it was raining the fresh air was so much better then the stale air of hopelessness in their work house.

Alena was still in shock, each time Erika grabbed her hand she wanted to cry out, the blistered skin begging to be left alone, but she kept quiet. Erika stopping the second guard played out in near slow motion, they were getting out of here, but the price to pay for doing so... She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes, she wanted to sit down and cry, to beg whoever for forgiveness for what she had done, but she also wanted to live, to be free, and this was the only way. It didn't seem to take long for Erika to take out the second guard and soon they were out in the fresh air. It felt nice, the cool rain on her exposed skin, the chill in the air compared to the stuffiness of the workhouse and the forge.

How long did they have before those guards were found and they came looking for them? Surely not too long, they would change out shifts, or realize two cells were empty... She took a deep breath, grabbed Erika's arm, and hurried off towards the forest, knowing they'd need cover if they were going to have a chance to escape. It would be a long time before they could stop running, before they'd ever feel safe, but at least they were free. Once among the trees she dropped to her knees, gasping for breath. Her blistered hands hit the rough ground in front of her and she cried out in pain. They would need to be bandaged somehow, otherwise she was sure they would be infected soon... one of the other girls who controlled fire, she had been burned on her leg by the forge, and the blisters left exposed. Soon her leg seemed to rot and shortly after she had died. Alena didn't want that, not now that she was out of there...

Alena was amazing, her tolerance for pain, her fortitude of will, Erika really was thankful they had chosen each other to escape with they might actually be able to survive. At least she hoped so, but realizing just how hard it was to run made Erika less hopeful. When they finally stopped she was short of breath, feeling rather worn out already. A frown lined her lips but she couldn’t let it discourage her. Right now they needed to focus on finding a place to rest. If only she could actually get ice to freeze she could make a stair way up into the trees, but she didn’t have that power. Her thoughts swam as she tried to remember anything she had learned from the rich houses that might be helpful. Was there something she could do to help them? There was. She kept Alena walking, her feet focused on the ground until she found something. Getting onto her knees she dug with her hands until there was a space under the roots of a tree for them to hide.

“Come on.” She said ushering Alena in as she tore strips off of her garment. She could use those as makeshift bandages. They would both need it on their necks and Alena looked like she needed it on her hands too. Crawling into the hallow Erika got to work, soaking the bandages in water and pulling the contaminants out of the clothe before cooling them down to near freezing and then wrapping them gently around Alena’s hands. “Does that help or hurt more?” She asked quietly.

Alena struggled to keep going but she knew she needed to, if it wasn't for Erika she would have quit many steps ago, collapsing and probably just waiting to be found. Just as her legs burned, her lungs strugging to take in air, they stopped. She could only watch, gasping for breath, as Erika dug into the dirt. At first she wanted to scream, to remind her they didn't have time. It wasn't until Erika was pulling her under the roots of the tree, a small cave of dirt, hopefully hidden away. Hopefully they would be safe here, the rain masking their trail and scent. Though all she could smell was burnt flesh, hers, Erika's, the guards... Had she really killed someone?

That train of thought was broken when she felt something cool on her blistered hands. Her black fingers curled, holding onto the wet cloth that soothed her burns. "It feels good..." She mumbled, struggling to see in the dark. How bad was it? Her hands were starting to feel numb already, was she going to lose them? She would never survive if she did. "Where will we go?" She asked, whispering, afraid of being caught already. She didn't know anything about this area, this town. She had grown up somewhere else, the memories distant and faded. She knew only the workhouse and the forge, it was all she had needed. Not that it mattered right now, she didn't think she could take another step. With her hands wrapped she curled up in the small space, trying to ignore the pain, the smell, and the negative thoughts that filled her mind.

With that bit of encouragement she cooled down the other cloths and wrapped them around Alena’s neck first and then her own, warming them up just a bit so they were still cold but not so much so that they felt freezing. She wanted to make sure that Erika’s hands could heal but she had see what prolonged exposure to cold water could do to the body. She had gotten sick a few times because of it. Focusing her thoughts back on here and now she pulled all of the water off of Alena’s body, except for the bandages. This made Alena had dry hair and clothes, Erika then did the same for herself, then back to focusing. “Honestly I didn’t think we would make it out alive. We really did this on a whim. I think we just have to keep running.” She whispered, her voice just loud enough to be heard over the rain.

“I’m just happy to be alive and out of that place, it’s such a good feeling to feel like I can breath again.” She looked at Erika. “You are so much stronger then me, physically. It’s really cool.” She said, trying to pay Erika a compliment.
