Four people are stuck in the Underground for no reason that they can fathom… They can not remember their pasts, or how they got to the Underground in the first place.
They are not dead, they are not subjugated to any of the timed missions that the normal Players are, they do not have to fight Noise, and they can freely interact with Players… but not the living world that the Underground overlaps with. They are, to put it simply, a baffling mixture of being alive and dead at the same time. Furthermore, they have no idea where they are, and no idea how long they have been there. As they do not have to “sleep” after missions, there is no way for them to know the passage of time.
The Reapers do not try to harm these people, but that does not mean that they are not curious about “the Unusuals,” as the people are informally dubbed. The Reapers may even be using the Unusuals without those people’s knowledge for their own schemes. But just because the Reapers don’t attack the Unusuals doesn’t mean that they don’t like to bother them.
Finally, the Unusuals grow fed up with being stuck in “limbo,” as they call it. As they learn more about where they are and what the Underground is for, they begin to seek out Players who might be able and willing to help them get out of the Underground and back to the Aboveground, where they believe they belong.
