It was strange but Erika felt she had to compensate for not having the strength to kill that guard. She was so frustrated with herself, but she would do better. She would help make sure that they survived. She would find them food and she would be useful. Looking down she saw Alena had only taken half of the berries so she hesitantly ate some. They were good, and it reminded her just how hungry she was. She ate a few more before watching Alena step out of the stream. Erika pulled the water off her friend’s food so it wouldn’t end up muddy, just a little dirty.

“Alright, let’s go then.” Alena began walking along the side of the river. “We will have to be careful though because rivers often run through towns.” She remembered learning that. Rivers were a source of water and so towns were often built around them. “It might be better if we tried to find a place to sleep now and continued once night falls. The dark will give us more cover.” And if they got really lost Alena could light them a small fire.

Erika was scared and nervous, but she smiled, holding out her empty hand for Alena to take if she wanted to so they could walk together. She was constantly forgetting about the blisters that poor Alena had on her hands.

Alena took her hand, despite the bit of pain she felt at the contact. She hadn't felt any bit of comfort in so long that she was willing to suffer through. "That sounds like a good idea..." She mumbled, wishing she had thought of it. Never would she have been able to survive on her own, she'd probably just wander in circles until she starved to death. Her berries didn't last long as they followed the river, but her stomach felt full enough for now, so she couldn't complain. As they walked she scanned the area, wondering where they would sleep for now. A nap sounded good, but the idea of walking at night scared her just a bit. Would there be wolves? She had heard them howl when she was but a child, her parents had told her that she was safe in her home. But what about in their home?

A shiver went down her spine at the thought, but she didn't voice her concerns to Erika. It was a good plan, they needed to be smart if they wanted to survive and not get caught. Along the bank she noticed a large willow tree, the branches dipped and swayed in the water. The branches were large and spread out from the thick trunk. "What about in the tree?" She asked with a shy smile, wondering if Erika would think her crazy for the suggestion. It seemed better than sleeping on the ground, and if anyone walked by they wouldn't see them. They had slept under a tree, why not? She hurried towards it, pulling Erika with her. It would be a tough climb, but where the branches met at the trunk was just enough space for them to fit and lean against branches and get some sleep.

Looking at the tree Erika smiled. "That's perfect but I can't climb." It seemed that didn't matter though as Alena all but pulled her up, dragging her up the tree. When they were up and comfortably sitting in the branches Erika had to catch her breath but she was smiling. This was a really great idea. They would be able to rest up here. She let out a happy sigh and relaxed looking at Alena. "This was a really good idea." She had finally let go of Alena's hand and was resting.

"After some sleep, we should be good to go..." Alena mumbled, a yawn escaping her. Why did she feel so tired? They hadn't walked too much, and it was only the afternoon... Yet right now all she wanted to do was sleep, and sleep, and sleep. For a whole day if possible. Then wake up and eat a hot meal. None of that would happen, of course, they were far from safe and had little means for a hot meal, unless they killed and cooked it themselves.

Sighing with content she closed her eyes, leaning against the branch behind her. Around here she could hear the birds and other creatures of the forest, it sounded so peaceful, and hopefully nothing else would come along to destroy it. "Just a small nap..." She muttered just as sleep began to claim her.

Erika didn’t sleep for long. She had to much on her mind and she simply couldn’t get it to shut up. Instead she pulled some of the water from the stream and was playing with it, thinking about the water helped her focus on her own thoughts. That’s when she heard it, the footsteps underneath them and a stop. Someone was getting water from the river.

“No one has sent up the signal which means those girls are still out there.” One of the men grumbled and a second responded. “100,000 reward for them, more if we can get them alive.”

“I heard their factories are having a hard time without one of them and they lost a lot of rich clients without the other. So I’m sure they are eager to punish them, themselves.” Erika swallowed hard. They wouldn’t just be killed, they would probably be tortured first, and then strung up as an example. The sun was still up, but the leaves hid them from view. Erika looked to Alena. If either of them moved to much they would call attention to themselves. Erika let the water flow into the trees and just remained still, hoping Alena didn’t wake up before they left.

It was impossible to sleep soundly, not with how concerned she was. At the sound of voices her eyes flickered open, she nearly jumped, afraid that they were about to be caught. Yet she couldn't see them, she saw little more than the tree they were in, the leaves surrounding them quite well. Glancing up at Erika she was surprised to see her awake, but glad that they were both aware of the threat so near them. So they were still searching for them, did that mean they'd never be safe? She couldn't go back, she killed a guard, she would be hung, or worse, for her crime. They'd know it was her...

She held up her hand slowly, a small flame flickering in her palm as she did so. She didn't want to fight, but she would if they had to, she wasn't going to go back, she would do everything she could to stop that fate.

Waiting, she didn't hear retreating footsteps. Were they stopping there? It would not be good for them to linger so long, she just hoped they'd continue on until dark, and make a camp. Then Alena and Erika could travel in the dark and hopefully be safe. How had they tracked them this far? How far would they have to run? Perhaps Erika was right, they needed to get across the water, somehow, and they might be safe then. Perhaps if they just kept following this stream, maybe they'd reach a lake, find a boat... then they could escape and find a home. Home. That would be so nice.

“They were here recently, look at these foot prints in the mud.”
“How do you know it wasn’t just some kid coming to play by the stream?”
“The water has a weird pattern here too. One of them was a water user right? She would have affected the water stream.”
“How do you know this?” Asked the other man.
“You have your skills I have mine.” He began looking around until he looked at the tree. Through a small gap in the leaves he made eye contact with Erika and Alena, putting his finger to his lips before turning to the other man. “Let’s keep going. If we go now we might be able to catch up to them.” The other man grunted and soon they were both gone.

Erika had not realized she had been holding her breath until she released it, looking at Alena. What had just happened? What the hell just happened? Had they been caught? Was that man coming back to get them, was he on their side. “Put out your flame.” She whispered, the glow would attract predators. She had to think, she had to think. The two men were headed the direction that the girls should have been headed. Was he cornering them into a trap? She rubbed her temples, think think think. She didn’t want to put Alena in harms way, she had to figure this out. She had to know why that man had not just told his companion that he had seen the girls. Maybe he was going to come back and kill them later. “We should move.” She said looked at Alena finally. “We should get out of here."

Alena was frozen, the small flame in her hand flickered out when Erika mentioned it. What had just happened? They had been seen, she was sure of it, the man had looked directly at them and did... something. Was he warning them he'd be back? Probably with more men. Erika was saying something. Move? No, she hadn't moved and given away their position. Had she? No, wait. Get out of here. Erika wanted to leave?

What if they encountered the men looking for them? Yet he knew they were here, so they were no longer safe. Frowning, she managed a curt nod. "Yes, we must leave." She muttered, stretching the best she could. They hadn't gotten much sleep, and now she wasn't sure she'd feel safe enough to stop anytime soon. "What way do we go?" She wondered out loud, doubting Erika knew anymore about this forest than she did. She couldn't hear voices anymore, couldn't see the men, so she climbed down from the tree, her damaged hands a feet struggling to do so with the bandages.Once on the ground she looked around, hoping the man hadn't set a trap for them, waiting for them to come down before grabbing them.

Erika was shaking as she jumped out of the tree and grabbed Alena’s hand. She didn’t care about the pain or anything, they had been seen and the man hadn’t tried to hurt them, it frightened the hell out of her. She began to run, running as fast as she could, dragging Alena with her. Her heart was pounding in her ears, she ran diagonally away from the stream so they continued to make progress away from the work house but also weren’t going to run into those men again, at least she hoped so. She was terrified and only stopped when her lungs literally couldn’t take it anymore.

She looked at Alena, it was dark out now, they had rested a bit, they should keep moving, others would be sleeping right? She was still shaking though, she was just scared, really really scared. “What are we going to do? What are we going to do?” She asked, having a slight panic attack.

Alena struggled to keep up with Erika, it was difficult, her feet ached and hurt and the pain in her hand wasn't helped by Erika's tight grip. Once she had tried to pull away, but it didn't work so she continued to run. Did it matter? She wasn't sure they could outrun those men if they figured out that they were here. Breathing was becoming difficult, and just before she collapsed, Erika stopped. Coming to a halting stop, Alena dropped to her knees, gasping for air. How long had they been running? It was getting dark, which would mean the forest could be more dangerous, yet they also had a greater chance of not getting caught by the men.

Sitting back for a moment, she watched Erika, confused by her outbursts and panic. "Shh. Shh." She warned, while trying to think of something, anything that would make for a decent plan. "I don't hear them chasing us, it's dark now. They will stop and rest, we will keep going." Pushing to her feet, she tried to brush the dirt from her hands and stolen breeches. "Just no running." She muttered, still having a hard time catching her breath. They needed to save what little energy they had left for if the men found them.

"Come on." She said in just above a whisper, heading in the same direction they'd been running in. Alena didn't really know where they were, but hopefully they were still moving away from the workhouse and the men looking for them. Maybe they'd find a town, where they could get food... of course they'd have to steal again. Was it really so wrong if they just took a little? They had nothing to offer, nothing of value.

It was hard to look for berries in the dark, all of her focus was on not tripping over roots and branches, and watching out for any dangers. She could hear what sounded like a wolf, thankfully it was quite far in the distance. Hopefully it would stay that way.

She was exhausted now and closed her eyes as she tried to catch her breath but air just wouldn’t come. Was she really ready to die? What if they tortured them first? Through all of her fear Alena was a voice of reason ‘Shh. Shh.’ that was right, if they wanted any hope of living she had to keep quiet, she had to be careful and not freak out. She calmed her breath, slow even breaths, soft and unheard. “No running.” She whispered in a mimic, yeah, no running, they both were to ragged as it was. They needed to kill something tonight and eat it, something with a good amount of meat on it, maybe a larger rabbit, or a deer.

Erika still hadn’t caught her breath either, she was still holding Alena’s hand as she searched for her friend in the dark. The stars would have to guide them from here on out. Stop, think, what was their next plan of action, they couldn’t run around aimlessly. “I’m sorry, I panicked.” She whispered. “We… we should find the river again, follow it to a town there will be hiding places in the town but also food.” They had no money but Erika had seen the lives of the rich, she had no problem stealing from them. She looked to Alena. “It’s going to be okay right? We will be okay?” She just needed to hear Alena say it once and she would be able to calm herself enough to continue on.

It confused her why that man had let them go but maybe he was a sick bastard who wanted to play cat and mouse. Would she ever feel safe? She looked to Alena again as they started to walk slowly. “As soon as the sun starts to rise I will dig us another hole to hide in. Or maybe we will find a good tree.” It had been raining earlier did that mean it was fall or spring? Were the days going to be longer or shorter then the nights, she couldn’t remember. She needed to eat.

Alena hid the pain in her stomach, she needed food, the little they had been fed for years was not enough to sustain someone to exert this kind of energy, and the berries they'd picked at were little help. They couldn't eat, not yet, they needed to keep going, to get as far away as possible from the men looking for them. Despite feeling no more confident than Erika, she nodded and managed a smile. "Yes, we'll be okay, we just need to keep going..." With that she urged Erika forward, listening carefully, hoping to find the river.

Her feet were aching so bad, she wished they had boots that fit them to protect themselves from the sticks and stones, the rough forest floor that tore up their skin, but unless they found a town, they were out of luck. Yet they had to keep going if they were ever going to be free. "I think I hear water..." She murmured, leaning in close, not wanting her voice to carry. It was faint but she tried to follow the sound, steering them towards what she thought might be the river and their only hope of not being lost in the woods.

Something scampered by her feet, she wanted to scream, to cry out in fear but she bit her tongue and said nothing. It couldn't have been big, probably a mouse or a rat, she figured, but she hated this darkness that surrounded them. Would they even see if the men chasing them approached? Surely the would make more noise than a little mouse.

Rather suddenly the stream was before them and despite her better judgement she burst from the treeline and crouched at it, cupping her hands and drinking the cold water. It felt amazing and she couldn't help but continue, filling her belly with the cool liquid, hoping it would hold her over, if only for a short time. Once they drank their fill they would have to continue, it was easier now, they'd follow the flow of the river, the current their guide in which direction they needed to head. Hopefully they had made the right choice, hopefully this led to a town, to civilization, and not back to their imprisonment.

The two both were starving and their bodies couldn’t hold out much longer if they didn’t get something to eat soon. Still, Alena had said the words that Erika needed to here. “Alright let’s go.” Her voice was soft as she kept her strength up. She had been so calm when they were getting away originally but now that she had tasted freedom she was so scared of losing it. “Keep going, Keep going.” She echoed and held onto Erika’s hand tight.

When they got to the water she got close to it and pulled some up into the air to use as protection if anything thing came at them. She was nervous and scared but she was able to react quickly as the guy from before came out from the tree line. She sent the water rushing at him first but he hid and she couldn’t hit him. “Now now, no need to be so hostile.” He said as he smirked to himself. “You two girls are a bit loud, thankfully my partner is out cold.” He wasn’t going to say anymore though because he wanted to give them a chance to not freak out. But by the way the water hitting the tree he could tell Erika wasn’t calming down.

“Alena we have to leave.”

“If I wanted to take you back in don’t you think I would have already?” He asked from behind his tree. She still didn’t believe him though.

“Alena we should leave.” But she was going to leave the actual decision to her friend.
