Ben smiled as he looked out the window at the mountains below. NOthing but trees and some snow on the mountain tops. It was beautiful and he couldnt wait to get to the airport and great his friend bob. he still couldn't believe that bob was getting married. The phone call he got from him a few months ago had been shocking and yet he still couldn't get over it. But here he was, on a plane headed up over some mountains since bob's fiancé wanted a nature themed wedding. He could see why, it was beautiful from up here, he couldn't wait to go down to the ground.

But there was one piece of this trip he was hating to the ultimate degree. His old friend would be there. He hadn't talked to her in years, after high school he just never bothered. Expecially since she hated him and he couldn't stand being near her. He was happy to head off to nursing school and get away from her after school. Now 26, he was a full-time nurse at a hospital and was making good money. Smiling as he thought of everything he accomplished over the years since high school, he started to relax. When a flight attendant came time, he tried to get her, "excuse me, miss, can I get some water?" he asked but she just seemed to ignore him. Frowning, he watched her run up the aisle all the way to the head of the plan. Shrugging, he relaxed again, he would catch her the next time.

Yet as he relaxed and was about to fall asleep, the plane shook. Ben's eyes snapped open and he looked outside the window. They were falling a bit. "excuse me passengers, no need to worry, just som-" that was all he heard from the over head before he felt the plane pitch and they started to head straight down. Gripping his armrest, he knew what was about to happen. With the difference in air pressure, it was only a matter of seconds before he passed out.

Groaning, Ben slowly started to open his eyes. Yet pain shot threw his left eye when he tried to open it. Only opening his right, he found he was still strapped into his seat but he was covered in debris. Slowly moving his arms, he found his left wouldn't move. Cursing, he guessed that when they crashed his left side had rammed into the side of the plane. Unbuckling himself, he managed to get to his feet, neither of his legs were badly damaged. Happyiness that he was still alive filled him, but then dread filled him as he looked around. The dead surrounded him and no one else was moving.

Jane leaned back against the headrest, eyes closed. She didn't like flying. Never had. Listening to her ipod, she ignored the small chatter around her. She was only doing this for Bob. Bob had been a good friend in high school. Even after high school, he had kept in touch. She was eager to see him and other friends from those days at his wedding. Pity that Ben was going to be there. Her heart sped up at the mere thought. They had been best friends. They always hung out and did things together. She should have seen it coming. Guys don't date girls that are like sisters to them. At the time though, she had thought differently. So when he nervously told her he had a question for her, then asked if she thought a girlfriend of hers would go to prom with her, she had been blown out of the water. It still stung.

Peaking a glimpse out the window before tightly closing her eyes again, she saw the mountains they were passing. Yeah, she really didn't want to be on this plane. It wasn't a safe place to her. She rather be back in her office doing her historical research than this. She had graduated college with a history degree and thoroughly enjoyed the challenges she faced. Her life was good now with a stable routine. Routine was always important. Her ipod finished one song and switched to the next.

Suddenly the plane lurched. She felt like her insides had been left behind somewhere. Eyes snapping open, she stared with wide eyes around as the plane shook. Her mouth opened in a silent scream as other passengers were not so silent. The whole place seemed to be coming apart. She felt herself getting rattled. She a section of roof disappeared and all ability to breath went right out with it. She gasped, or tried to, as blackness crowded in on her panic state.

Slowly coming to, she numbly remembered that she was in a crashed plane. Groaning, she opening her eyes and registered that her ipod was still playing. Turning it off and pulling out the ear plugs, she looked around. Still strapped into her seat, she couldn't jump away like she wanted to at the site of the woman beside her. Clearly dead with glazed eyes, she sent shivers down Jane's spine. Slowly unbuckling her seatbelt, she stood and backed up into the aisle staring at the dead woman. The woman was dead. In her shock, her thoughts started replying that phrase over and over. She didn't notice the bruising in her side from where the armrest had held her in their plummet earthward. All she could focus on was that she was near a dead person and that scared her.

Ben shook his head as he looked around and held his left arm close to his side. Sure he was use to seeing death, it was something he had to deal with everyday. But this was just too much. Silent tears started to run down his face when he saw the little boy who had been sitting in front of him, his eyes lifeless, and in his arms still held his bear but now colored red. Turning away, he quickly whipped his tears away and got himself together. He knew he had to find others but first he had to take care of himself. Stuffing down all emotions, he went over to man who was clearly dead and ripped his shirt off. Ripping it with his teeth, he wrapped his broken arm and made a make shift sling. ONce that was done with he then pressed the rest of his shirt to his left eye. WHen he pulled it away it was covered in blood. Shaking his head, he wrapped a piece of ripped shirt around his head to put pressure on it.

ONce he was taken care of he started to look for anyone else alive. As he walked down the aisle, he checked each row and yet he found he might of been the luckiest out of everyone. Some people had pieces of plane in them, others had broken necks and it was just horrible to see. Yet ben was sure too keep his cool, he had to. He continued to walk around till he got to the end... the plane had crashed in half. He could see the other half of the plane form here, but what layer in between wasn't something he wanted to see. Body parts and bodes layer on the ground. Focusing on the other half of the plane, he walked straight towards it, he didn't want to see.

After walking for a bit he came to the other half of the plane. Looking inside, his hopes in finding someone very low. From what he had seen there landing had been less then good or near good or even near bad. It was more like the level beyond bad. Yet as he stepped inside and over some thrown seats and a dead couple he saw something. THere was someone in the aisle. He had to contain his excitement of finding someone alive as he made his way over. From what he could tell she looked good, better then he did. Yet as he got closer and followed her eyes he knew she was in shock of seeing the dead women next to her.

Once he got close enough he could barely believe who he was seeing. It was Jane. excitement mixed with anger filled him, but slowly his emotions settled on relief. She was alive. Gently placing a hand on her shoulder, he said, "don't stare too long, it only makes things worse." he said softly. He then looked around everywhere else but saw that no one else seemed to be alive or lively at the moment. They were the only two who had managed to survive. "come on jane, we need to get out of here." he said as he looked at her.

Jane couldn't think straight. The lady was dead. Dead. No second chances. It was final. This wasn't a video game that could be restarted. There weren't more lives to use up. She just couldn't take that in. And those eyes. Their glazed look seemed to be full of lifelessness. How could something so empty be full of something else that was also empty? Nothing was making sense. Through all this mind numbing fog, she felt a hand on her shoulder.

Hearing a familiar voice that had before been connected to good emotions, she slowly turned and stared blankly up into a familiar face. Familiar face that wasn't registering. Did she know him.... oh yeah. Ben! She felt instant relief to see him, quickly followed by the feelings of betrayal and bitterness. She wasn't sure how to respond. What should she do or say? How should she act? He was alive. His eyes weren't glazed. She wanted to stare into them until the memory of the woman sank away, but at the same time she should hate him and not listen to a word he said. Why was life so complicated?

At his insistence that they needed to leave, she shut down her brain and automatically moved to follow. Once they were away from here, she would figure it out. At this moment, he was right. At this moment, she wanted nothing more than to get out. Once she started walking towards the jagged and torn opening, it seemed like she couldn't move faster enough. She found herself struggling to hold in her panic and simply get out. Seeing more bodies on the way out didn't increase her desire to remain either. Some had jagged wounds that had drying blood. Others were missing body parts. She silently wondered if things could get any worse.

Ben was glad when Jane started to follow him out of the plane. It wasn't right to stay there, it would be too shocking for someone who wasn't use to seeing death. Even once they got outside it wasn't okay, death still surrounded them. So he started to lead her down the way, towards a thick patch of trees. Once there, it seemed that this was untouched by the death of the crash and he turned to her. Gently taking her by her shoulder, he made her sit down with her back against the tree.

"are you okay, jane? does anything hurt? can you move everything?" he asked as he started to check her over with his good hand and eye. After careful looking he couldn't find anything but knew things were never that simple. She could have something internal bleeding or a fracture or one of her organs could of ruptured. He hoped none of those had happened, no matter how much he disliked her. If he ended up being the only one out here in the middle of no where he wasn't sure if he could make it on his own. Just the thought of being completely alone and the possibility of never being found scared him.

After a bit, he sat down new to her and ran a hand threw his hair. Slowly he felt himself starting to realize just how bad this was. Panic started to set in and he knew he couldn't let himself panic. If he did it would be bad. So he forced himself to dig his nails into his leg, focusing on the pain for a bit before he turned to her, "did you see anyone else alive?" was the only question he found come to mind as he tried to search for anything else to ask her.

She foggily followed. Thinking everything would be okay when she got out of the plane, she almost screamed when she saw the bodies... or pieces of them... littered around. She just kept going. Where to go though? Seeing Ben head in one direction gave her something to focus on. Instead of looking down, she looked at his back. Where he walked, she walked. Where he went, she went. When he stopped, she felt confused about what to do. She was about to just keep walking when he gently guided her to a place to sit. Thankfully, when she dared to look around, they were far enough away that she didn't have see anymore blood.

His voice interrupted her thoughts. She started to look up at his face and glanced at his one good eye. She was still mad at him. Grateful beyond belief that he was here now. Yet the anger and bitterness were still inside of her. She remembered how she had gotten her friends to side with her when she went her own way. How she had taken anything he did and turned it into a crime in order to hurt him as he had hurt her. As he checked her over, she struggled now to put together that the monster she had created of him in her mind and this man helping her were the same. Why did she always have to be so stubborn?

When he seemed satisfied that she was fine, he sat down too. She slowly glanced at him, never meeting his eyes again. He was tense. She figured it was for having to put up with her, again. She leaned her forearms onto her knees and pushed the throbbing pain she had on her side. The armrest had been none too gentle in the crash. She was sure she had a good sized bruise there. Muscles were starting to stiffen up too. Her thoughts were wondering when he spoke, again. He asked her if anyone else was alive. She realized she hadn't spoken since the crash. She didn't really want to now. She had to stay in control of her feelings and she might cry if she did speak. So she simply shook her head no.

After a moment, she looked over at him. He was still tense. She wished that she could relieve him of having to deal with her presence. Then she saw him digging his nails into his leg. Of all the dumb-assed things for a guy to do over a woman. Well if he was going to regret her presence that much, she would give him a reason. She shifted so that she was sitting slightly behind him. She started to massage out his good shoulder and neck. Since she was a child, her abilities at massage had always brought relief and peace. Her mother was disabled and whenever she had spasms, her massages ceased them. Now she figured this would either relax him or give him something to truly be angry, at the moment, against her for.

Ben relaxed when he saw her shake her no and guessed that he had gotten the worse out of the crash. Yet the thought of the crash refreshed his mine of the horror and everything else. The panic started to fill him again and he dug his nails deeper into his leg. He couldn't panic, he couldn't. When he felt her hand on him, he nearly jumped to his feet he was so tense. But slowly he let himself relax into her touch. It brought back the memories of when he got her to do this for him all the time in middle school when he got tense and now he wished that things were still like that between them.

"thanks." he said softly as he found himself leaning towards her as she massaged his shoulder and neck. Not wanting to piss her off, like he found that everything he did near her did, he straightened up. After the prom in high school every thing he never did near her pissed her off. He didn't get why and part of him still didn't know. He knew it had to deal with prom but wasn't sure what had made her mad. Sure he had ended up going to prom with one of her friends, but it was only because he thought that someone else had already asked her, one of the popular kids. Shaking the thought from his mind, he looked over at her.

"I think I am going to go and see what I can find out of the crash, maybe I can find a phone or something. Do you want to come with me or stay here?" he asked as he looked at her in the eyes. He knew that she might not want too, especially if she wasn't use to seeing death. Death wasn't something you wanted to stay around for a while, but it was something he had to deal with every day but even to him this was pushing the limits.

Slowly getting to his feet, he smiled down at her, "your welcome to stay, I know this isn't exactly the best kind of situation that you might want to be in." he said since he knew she never handled things with body parts or blood well. When ever he wanted to see a horror movie she never came with him, she couldn't handle them. He still remembered when he took her to see the new horror movie in middle school, he ended up taking her out of the theater after ten minutes into the movie since it had been bad.

She was surprised when he actually relaxed at her touch. Well at least there was one thing he didn't hate about her. She sure could name a few things that he should hate. She hated herself sometimes. If this helped him at all though, she gladly would keep it up. Massage techniques was something she prided herself in. It helped relax her as well. Though she felt kinda guilty relaxing when she had told so many she hated him. How could you be angry with someone and be nice to them too? She pushed the thought aside. She would figure it out later.

When he thanked her and started to get up, she tried to nonchalantly look away. That didn't work. He was talking to her and it is rude to look away when someone is addressing you. Reluctantly she looked back at him and was taken by surprise at the direct eye contact. Her heart did flitter flutters and her breath caught. Darn it. He still was crazy good looking and some part of her seemed determined to remind her of that. For a moment, she almost thought he cared how she was doing. Push that though away for later too. She didn't need this. Also, she really didn't want to go.

Tightening her arms around herself, she stayed quiet and looked down. There was no way she was going back over there. Some creepy idea of headless people getting up and walking around came to mind. Oh heck no! She was not going back over there. Taking a deep breathe, she waved him away. Let him go back if he wanted. She couldn't. Wait, what if he came back with dead germs all over him? Like coodies? Yeah, she was too old for coodies and all, but germs was another story. She gritted her teeth and mentally began telling herself, "Stop it over active imagination. Just stop it."

Ben smiled when he saw her wave him away and knew that she was going to do that. She never wanted to be anywhere near death. Yet when he saw her seem to tense up he knew he had to get her mind off of the dead. Leaving her to dwell on death wasn't something anyone should think about. He knew that she would get angry at him for this but it would help her, "good, I don't want a scared little cry baby around me at the moment." he then turned and headed out back towards the crash. Hell would rain down on him when he came back and she decided to yell at him but at least she would be over the shock of all this.

When he got back to the crash, he just stared at the bodies for a little while. He then started to venture into the crash and looked around for anything that they could use. Picking threw some of the carry on bags, he soon found a blanket, clothing and a few other things. Heading back towards where the luggage was, he found that that had been ripped open and everything had been thrown from the plane. Sighing, he hoped that there was still some useful things. But after a few minutes of looking, he found one thing that he could of danced about. A lighter. Finding nothing else, he started to make his way back he saw something out of the corner of his eyes. Picking it up, he found it was a teddy bear. Smiling to himself, he kept it and started to head back.

Ben soon got back to her and looked at her, "well we will live for a while." he said as he set everything down in front of her to see. The blanket, the lighter, the clothing, some food (like the little peanuts they give everyone), the lighter ,and the teddy bear. Picking up some of the nuts he held it out to her, "here, your probably starving." he said and wondered if she was going to still be mad at him for the comment he made before he left.

Jane's head shot up at that. How dare he! She let all of hell's fury burn through her gaze at his retreating back. If looks could kill, he would have joined the corpses laying around. Oh that... that... buffoon! She got up and began pacing. So he thought he was going to have to deal with some clingy city girl did he? That was just like him. He hadn't changed one bit. What had ever gone through her mind to think he actually cared. He was the same old thoughtless, self-centered jerk she had known back in school.

She wouldn't sit here blandly like some helpless person. Fuming, she went in search of a proper walking stick. It wasn't hard to find. Tearing off the branches easily enough, she used a piece of flint to smooth it down. She tested it and it seemed sturdy enough. At least she had that. She glanced around, wondering if maybe she should just take off on her own. That thought barely entered her mind though when she heard him returning. Too late. It would look like she was running away if he saw her leaving now. She straightened her shoulders and waited, leaning against a tree with arms crossed.

He came back with several things. She looked them over as he placed them neatly on the ground in front of her. There was a blanket. Airplanes didn't have the best blankets in the world but this would definitely be better than nothing. The lighter was good. Help them at least have a campfire at night. Who knows how cold it got around here when the sun went down. Or what wild animals might be lurking nearby... which reminded her, they needed to get as far from here as possible before sunset. There were some clothes. It would have to do. The teddy bear was a sweet touch. When it came time to get out of here, she would offer to help carry some of this stuff and definitely take that.

At his offer of the peanuts, she felt her stubborn streak rise up. Not hard considering what he had said to her. "Actually I'm not. However you go ahead. You will need all the strength you can get." To deal with me that is, she thought. She straightened away from the tree and suggested tersely, "We should get out of here. The dead will be a homing beacon for predators." She looked away from him as she said that, her jaw clenched. He was just aggravating.

Ben knew right away when he got back that she was mad at him, better then her being in shock over the dead. A mad Jane was better then a shocked jane. But when she didn't want to take the peanuts he sighed, but hat was the downfall of having a angry jane. He then nodded when he heard her, "yeah, but which direction should we head too?" he asked as he layer out the blanket and stuck everything in the middle of it except for the teddy bear. He then tied the end of the blanket together and grabbed a stick. Sticking it under the knot to make a hobo bag he held it out to her, "do you think you could carry it, I am not in the best of shape to do anything." he said as he looked at her.

He knew that if they didn't' find a town in a few days he would most likely die. With how his arm was and his eye, he would be a beacon to a bear or mountain lion. It would be better if she had everything and had a chance of running and surviving instead of him taking everything he had found down with him. He then thought of something, "could you stay right here for a second, I need to check something." he then headed back to the plane.

After looking around for a little while he found a broken piece of mirror still intact on the wall. Deciding to take a look at his injuries, he slowly peeled away the shirt that was on his head. When he saw his eye in the mirror it would make any doctor weep. He wouldn't ever be able to see out of it again, it was that bad. Shaking his head, he wrapped it back up before looking at his arm. ONce he had removed all the cloth he could see that it was beat up badly. The only reason it hurt to move it was because it had a gash running down the length of it and probably had a fracture in it. Shaking his head again, he wrapped it back up with fresh cloth and put it back in a sling before heading back.

He hoped that she would still be there, if she wasn't he would understand. She probably still hated him for the comment but it was for her own good. He wished he had been as lucky as her and not get hurt, he would then be more useful then a ticking time bomb. As he got closer, he wondered if she should say sorry to her. Yet he knew that if he did she would only take it the wrong way, just like she did with everything else he did.

When he offered her the stick and bag to carry. Her first reaction was disbelief. He was going to make her carry the load? Just like him to want to give everything else to others to worry about. However, as she glanced at his bandages, she had to admit that it would be hard for him to get around. Reluctantly she took the stick from him and placed it over her shoulder. All water ran downhill, and if you could find a stream, then you could follow it to a larger one. Eventually, you would find a town along side one. So she suggested, "We should head downhill." She said it in no uncertain terms. Better than trying to reason with him any ideas he had.

He left for a moment, leaving her to contemplate. She hadn't seen Ben in quite a few years. Now here he was the only one around at all. Talk about the phrase, "last one on earth" and the stuff she said she wouldn't do. Like talk to him and be nice to him. She had broken both of those already. She thought about his injuries. If he wasn't injured, she would totally take off on him right now. She had a soft spot though for the helpless and though he was anything but, there was no getting around the fact that he was half blind and handicapped.

As he came back, she stood there and offered while looking the other way, "Here, take this." She held out the walking stick she had made. "You will need it." It would be tough walking in any direction. At least he would have a chance of keeping his balance better this way. And a chance of keeping up with her. She was going to walk fast and get as much ground between them and the plane as possible.

Ben was a little bit surprised when he saw that she hadn't run away with everything when he got back. He had fully expected her to run off and not care about him. When she offered him the stick, he looked at it for a second and then gently took it from her. "thanks." he said softly and gave her a honest smile. Even if it wasn't a gift or anything, it was nice to know that the nice girl he had known in middle school was somewhere in there.

Looking around a bit, he saw a slope and pointed that way with the stick, "I think that is our best bet on getting down." he said as he turned to her. "it will be a little rough but hopefully we will be able to find a house or a town in a few days." He then started to head down. He didn't want to be a burden to her, he had always been like that. Even in high school he never bothered her with everything that happened to him. Most of the guys in school made fun of him for wanting to be a male nurse and got bullied because of it. She probably didn't even know since he kept it from her. It was also why he never asked her to prom, because the popular kid had made sure he didn't even thought he never asked her out.

As he walked, making sure to keep a fast pace so that she didn't have to slow down for him, He looked at her. "so.... how have you been?" he asked as he looked at her and tried to pick up a conversation. It would be kind of hard after everything that had happened between them but it was better then walking in silence.

She watched him take off all confident and proud. Just like him to think he could do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted to. He was heading in the direction she would have chosen, so unless she wanted to just be a pain - tempting - then she would also go that way. Quickly jogging to catch up and then keeping a fast paced walk so she didn't lose him, she started to simmer inside at how he always assumed so much without paying any attention to others. She could have left him here, yet here he was acting to haughty.

Then he asked her what she had been up to. Gritting her teeth, she replied, "Oh you know, being a crybaby and flooding the country with my tears. How about you? Running for president lately?" She had said that last part without thinking. It fit though. Like what he was doing now. Taking charge and all. He always liked to be a leader. And the president also was a politician, and politicians gave you false promises but never deliver on them.

Ben continued to walk but when he heard her reply he stopped in his footsteps. Turning to look at her, he glared in her eyes, "look, I am trying to be nice, that was the only mean thing I said to you so that you could wake up. If I hadn't of don't that you would of gone into shock and I have no way of treating you out here. So if you would just cool your jets and be somewhat nice to me that would be great." he said as he looked at her and then turned to get going again.

He walked at a slower pace then before and then said, "but if you must know I am a nurse and I have no plans of running for president. " he said and continued to walk. "It is my dream job and I am happy helping others. Have you gotten to your dream job yet? or are you working someplace else?" he asked as he looked over at her and continued to walk but his pace kept on slowing.

She stopped surprised when he turned to glare at her. His retort was somewhat valid and she felt kinda bad for it. Her stubborn self didn't like that too much. He was the jerk, even if he was being nice right now. Her mother always said if you had nothing good to say, to keep your trap shut. She could always follow that policy. But then he would get upset at her for the cold shoulder she was sure to enjoy giving. She sighed and kept drudging forward, listening to him talk about being a nurse.

Something was off though. Jane looked up at Ben and started measuring with her eyes how long it took him to get from one point to another. After a few minutes, she wondered if maybe he wasn't slowing down a bit. So much for his bravado. True they were hiking in the mountains, but they were going downhill and the forest was rather calm and peaceful to her. Still, the fact remained. He was a bit slower in his pace. Then he asked her where she was at. She wasn't sure she was going to bother to answer, except then he looked back at her. Damn heart sped up like it always did under his gaze. She had to answer to hide her flustered self. Why in the world hadn't she gotten over him yet? "Well, I'm a historical researcher like I have wanted. Well, working with history like I wanted. Could think of a few jobs that uses my degree that I would prefer." She eyed him, he was really slowly down.

Biting her lip for a moment, she considered passing him and walking fast on ahead. Very tempting. It would show him up that she was better off than he. Instead, she slowly said, "Um, since you are in a nice mood and all, could we stop for a bit. I think I could use a rest. Maybe hurt myself a bit more than I thought in the crash." Okay, so she was stalling. He needed a rest and she might as well take the hit for being the reason they stopped. Though it killed her to ask a favor of him. She kept her chin up and face closed of any emotion. And the bruise on the side of her rib cage was aching a little, so showing some pain because of that wouldn't be hard if she needed to push it.

Ben smiled when he heard her and nodded. He was glad that she was doing something she liked, she had always been the history person. When ever in school he needed help he would ask her and she was the only reason he actually passed any of his history classes in high school. "that is great news, I am happy for you." he said as he looked at her, "and I am sure you will get a job you will like better."

When she asked to tai a break he was shocked. He had thought for sure that she would of just gone on ahead of him and then leave him here. But he slowly nodded and smiled, "yeah, no problem." he said as he looked at her. He then got worried, "if your hurting badly, I can take a look at you. I wouldn't want you to be in too much pain." he said since one of them in pain was good enough. His arm and eye were hurting and he knew that was to be expected, he just hoped he didn't get blood poisoning or something. If he got that, then he would be doomed out here.

Looking around, he found a stump and slowly sat down on it. As he looked over at her he couldn't help but think of gym and laughed slightly, "you know this reminds me of all the times in gym you use to hang with me." he said since he wasn't one of the more athletic people. Infact he could hardly play any of the games they did in high school. Yet in gym, she always made sure to stick close to him and he wished he had a way to thank her for that. "you were the best friend a guy could ask for then." he said softly as he looked at the ground and rubbed his arm a little bit.

She made a show of sitting down at the base of a tree with relief. It had been awhile since she had been out hiking so it was kinda nice to take a break. But kinda nice didn't mean she didn't have it in her to keep going. The concern in his voice when he offered to look her over surprised her. Looking back up at him, she said, "It is okay. I'm sure it is no big deal. Just a moment will do for me." In truth she didn't want him to examine her and see she wasn't hurt beyond the bruise. Though it sure was bothering her. That wasn't entirely true. A part of her really wanted him closer to her, and that mustn't happen. She had to stay logical and her emotions going haywire would ruin that.

His memories brought back her own of gym class. "I remember gym. I didn't like the arrogant attitudes of some of the boys. They figured they were all that and such. If they wanted me on their team, it was a bit fun to say no." She held back from commenting on how much he had meant to her. That was old news. History. The past. He had chosen others in place of her when she had wanted him the most. She wouldn't make the mistake again. Looking up through the trees, she made out some dark clouds. Weather sure could change fast. Perhaps resting was a mistake.

"Well, the break helped a lot. We better get moving." She put a little extra fake cheer into her voice. Rapidly standing, she picked up her pole and bundle and walked over to him. "Come on." She would keep an eye out for a thick pine tree or a cave along the way. Hopefully he didn't notice anything amiss. They could possibly get some good distance in if they kept moving. There had to be some sort of shelter in that time frame.

Ben relaxed as he sat there and watched her make a big show. Hearing that her injuries weren't that bad, he was glad about that and continued to relax. If she wash't hurt too badly, that mean she had more of a chance at surviving this then he did. He knew it was bad of thin to think that way, yet he knew it was true. When he heard her talk go gym, he couldn't' help but smile as he thought of that. "yeah, I remember that, they hated it when you said no to playing on there team or anything else you asked them. I guessed that is why they hated me so much." he said as he looked down at the ground and remembered they harassing him for being so close to her.

When he heard her say they better keep on moving, he nodded and slowly got to his feet. "I never got to tell you how much you sticking with me all that time meant to me, guess it is too late now." he said softly to himself before starting to head off after her. She had stuck with him threw everything and he had never gotten to do anything for her. Even when he had wanted too, that chance was taken from him by those jerks at school. Now they were completely apart but he still was thankful towards her for all that, even though she hated his guts right now.

As he walked, he felt the sun starting to go away and looked up. The clouds he saw weren't good and instantly he started to look for cover. Getting sick after something like a plane crash wasn't exactly a good thing. Whiping his head from side to side, as he looked for a place, he soon had to stop. He was giving himself a headache and that would help no one. So he settled for looking at the back of Janes head, "uh... do you see any shelter? looks like the weather is turning." he said as he walked with her.

She glanced back at him and winked, "Of course. Why do you think I insisted we get going. When we were at the top of that bluff a few minutes ago, I saw a creek with large rock outcroppings. There most likely is a cave there." She rounded the corner. Pausing with a grin, she heard her creek and saw the shallow cave. It didn't go back far, but was facing the right direction to provide shelter from the wind and coming storm. "Come on, there it is." She led the way over, grabbing small sticks along the way.

Reaching the shelter, she felt relieved to see no snakes. Setting down her load and quickly making a small stack with the sticks, she suggested, "Get in here and sit." Then she hopped up and ran back out. Quickly getting a handful of pine needles and some larger sticks, she came back and set them down. Opening the bundle hurriedly, she pulled out the lighter and set it beside her. Moving the pine needles into the center and carefully but quickly setting the small sticks on top, she lit the pine needles with the lighter. Coaxing them with her breathe, she got a small fire going. Feeding the pile with the larger sticks until she had them all on, she gave a whoop and ran back out to get more.

Finding some good sized branches, she carried them in and stacked them just inside the entrance. The wind was picking up quite a bit now. Putting a forked one over the fire and supporting it with another straight branch that held the two up, she finally sat down and looked into the fire. Fire always mesmerized her. Absent-mindly she asked, "What did you mean by they hated you? They didn't do anything to you did they?"

Ben smirked when he heard her and nodded as he listened. FOllowing her over to the cave, he helped in her collection of wood as much as he could. Yet he couldn't' carry much at all, not with how his arm was. Yet once they got there he smiled, it was nice and covered, exactly what they needed. Dusting off the area that was furthest back, he made sure that there was nothing hiding in the corners. He didn't' want to end up falling asleep and waking up to a snake in front of his face or something like that.

Turning, he saw her starting up a fire and pulled over some needles so that she could continue to feed it. He was now really glad he ahd found them a lighter. If he hadn't the would be freezing once the rain came. When she ran outside to get more wood, he sat there and made sure that nothing happened to the fire. If it went out it wouldn't be good. HTe lighter probably only had some fuel in it for a little while. Yet it ws limited since he wasn't sure when they would get out of the forest.

When she came back he smiled and sat back. He wasn't much use at the moment with how his arm was. Yet soon she had a good fire going and he watched it with her. When he heard her question, he sighed. "oh, they hated my guts. They teased me about wanting to be a male nurse, threaten me about staying away from you, beat me up for not staying away from you. But didn't mind it all that much since I knew I was lucky to have a friend like you. Yet after the prom things between us died." he said as he watched the fire.

She sighed. He was always helping her quietly, never complaining. That would just be like him to have not told her he was being bullied. Looking at the ground, she whispered, "Why the heck didn't you say something? Did they say something to you before prom too?" She was a bit angry. At herself as much as with him. This really didn't make sense to her. He had been her closest friends here he had held something like that back from her?

Ben picked up a stick and slowly started to draw on the ground. Hearing her he smirked, "i never said anything because I didn't want you to worry. You deserved to worry about your own problems, not mine." he said since he knew that she had been worried about college all that time. When he heard the word prom he shook his head, "I was planning on asking you and they cornered me. They beat me up and made it clear that the jock, Tanner, was going to ask you out. But then they decided to torture me. They watched as I went over to you and ask about your friend. I wanted to ask you but I couldn't and when I saw at prom that no one had I felt horrible." he said as he continued to look at the ground. "i tried saying sorry and talking to you but you never wanted to hear it."

"Of course not. I felt betrayed." Standing, she started pacing. "You know I hated those guys. You knew I would never consider going out with them. If you had told me, we could have duped them somehow together. Friends are supposed to help each other. You held out on me with that. Did you think that life would be easier if you played martyr?" She was fuming mad. Mad at him for just not trusting in her in the first place. Mad at herself for not being loyal to him. She had failed as a friend herself. The wind outside was picking up. The first splatter of rain started to fall.

Ben looked at the ground and grabbed ahold of a twig. Shoving the end into the fire, he watched as it burned. "I knew life wouldn't be easier on me, but I thought it would be better for you." he said and looked up at her. "I have always wanted the best for you, that is why I never allowed you to find out about the bulling. I didn't want you to have to worry about me. Then after prom, I tried to talk to you but everything I said pissed you off. So I figured that if you didn't want to be friends with me anymore that would be fine, as long as it made you happy." he said as he watched her. He then noticed it was starting to rain. Picking up the blanket, he stood up and walked over to her. Wrapping it around he he pushed her towards the back of the cave, "it is going to rain badly, don't want you to get sick." he said as he looked at her.
