“Renji-kun…” Hinamori said, a slight quiver in her voice. Renji looked away from her face, not wanted to meet the tears there. She always made such a big deal out of everything, he had always thought that. It wasn’t like they were shipping him of to the real world, he was only moving divisions. The way she talked about it you’d think he’d been given a death sentence.
Kira had been all together more sensible about the whole thing, and Renji was really glad of that. He loved Hinamoi, he did, she was like a kid sister to him, but sometimes she got on his last nerve, just like a kid sister. Kira was a lot calmer then either of them and often found himself mediating their clashes of character.
When they’d been packing up his things, Hinamori had gotten really upset at him, asking him if he didn’t care about them, since he was so happy to be moved. He did care about them. Hell, he’d have probably gone mad in the academy after all that shit with Rukia if it wasn’t for them. He was going to miss them, but he’d still see them plenty. He was sure as hell still going out drinking with them as often as he could, after all. And he’d been transferred to the eleventh. Really, when you wanted to become strong, what better division to be transferred into.
After all, he still had things to prove.
The room here wasn’t as nice as the one he’d shared with Kira. It was smaller, and a single room. Renji had never slept in a room alone before. He guessed the members of 11th would have tried to kill each other if you asked them to share sleeping quarters with each other. Hinamori had tried to make it nice, but it was a dismal place.
He didn’t care, he wasn’t here to sit in his room. As far as he was concerned, he was here to fight. That was his goal, to defeat as many people as he could, to become as strong as he could. He had to!
“Thanks for helping me move my stuff, guys,” he said, throwing a companionable arm around Hinamori’s shoulders. “Don’t worry about me, I gotta be at a meeting soon and don’t you guys have patrol?”
“Yeah,” Kira said, sparing him a small grin, “We should get going…”
“Renji…” Hinamori mumbled, but before she could start crying Kira took her elbow and steered her out of the room, mumbling in her ear about how everything was going to be ok.
They let the door close behind them.
For a minute, Renji stood in his room and thought he might suffocate, it was so small. He much preferred a communal living space. But, if this was one of the trails he had to go through to get stronger, he would take it head on.
