"That's... kind of weird," Sophia agreed, looking puzzled. "On the one hand, I am tempted to pick it up for myself and try. On the other hand, I'm not sure if it's safer for one of us to remain unattached, at least for now."

"Yeah," Pearl said. "But at the same time I'm kind of thinking that two heads might be better than one for figuring it out, so we might have a better chance if you touch it too."

"Fair point." Sophia took a deep breath. "Alright. I'll give it a go." She reached over and picked up the stone, focusing on it and trying to mimic it. Things went slightly better for her; she was prepared for the rush, sort of.

Pearl watched, interested to see it from the outside. She leaned forward a bit when she saw the purple glow creep up her sister's wrist and up her arm.

"Shit that feels weird," Sophia hissed, rolling her shoulders. There was a bit of a purple tinge to her eyes as well, and she was able to hold on to the stone for a few moments longer before dropping it.

"Yeah it does," Pearl agreed. She let the stone bounce to the table, instead focusing on her sister. "Doing okay?"

"So far," Sophia said cautiously, frowning down at her still-faintly-purple hand. "I see what you mean, though. It packs a wallop."

"Your eyes turned purple," Pearl said. "Did mine do that, when I touched it?"

"...Maybe? I don't remember looking at your eyes. Your hand definitely did." Sophia shrugged. "Maybe it has to do with the length of exposure? Or how long we try to mimic it for?"

"I have no clue," Pearl said. She glanced at the stone again and then back at her sister. "Maybe I should try again? What do you think?"

"Sure, try it again," Sophia said after a moment. "I don't think it'll hurt, and you'll be better prepared this time."

Pearl hesitated just slightly, and then reached out to pick up the stone. Almost as soon as she touched it, she could feel the sheer power of it: solid and strong and dense. Because she was ready for it, this time, she didn't immediately drop it again.

"This is incredible," she murmured.

"It is," Sophia agreed quietly. "Not like anything we've dealt with before at all." She was watching Pearl more closely this time.

"I almost feel like it wants me to do something," Pearl said, looking at the stone. She was looking into its depths, almost looking through it. "I feel anxious. Like I should be doing something with it, I just don't know what."

Sophia frowned. "No ideas as to what you should do?" She asked. "Nothing concrete?"

"No," Pearl replied, still staring into the stone. "Just that it... wants to be used. Somehow." Finally, reluctantly, she put the stone down, blinking and shaking her head.

Sophia shrugged. "Well, I'm not sure," she murmured. "Maybe it'll get clearer over time? Or with repeated exposure? For now I don't think it's something we need to worry about too much."

Pearl nodded. She rubbed her eyes a bit.

"It wasn't as exhausting the second time," she said. "But it was still intense."

"Right. I kind of get the feeling that thing has no setting other than intense," Sophia murmured, looking at the stone. It was still sitting there gently shining, but nothing more than that.

"Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing," Pearl said, looking at it as well. Reaching out, she nudged it gently, and it threw a couple of purple sparks but didn't do anything more than that.

Sophia snorted quietly. "Well, looks like we'll have some time to figure out what it wants," she said. "And the fact that it wants something is mildly terrifying, but I'm ignoring that for now."

"It is definitely terrifying," Pearl agreed. She glanced at her sister. "What should we do with it now? I mean, we can't just leave it on the kitchen table. Where should we put it?"

"Um." Sophia shrugged. "In one of our jewelry boxes? Unless we think we want to have it more easily accessible, then we can put it in that empty flour bin in the pantry."

"I might have an empty trinket box somewhere," Pearl said. "Think that would work?"

"Sure," Sophia agreed. "And we can leave it somewhere. I doubt either of us is going to leave it entirely alone now."
