This much is true. Unfortunately, it is hardly enough for me to live independently... At this point, I'm seriously considering going back to college/university for a masters or a more useful degree...

I have a bachelor's degree but what I actually learned at school is hardly helpful. I want to be more into the technology side of marketing but my program was so outdated... Really makes me wish I had transferred to a better business school. Or at least gone into the communications department.

Really, I think degrees are worthless if you didn't actually learn anything. Which I think happens more often than not.

For my profession, it is the norm to get those degrees to climb my career ladder.

I think I'm more just bitter about my school in general. Again, they were incredibly far behind on marketing practices in a digital age.

Daee, I was told that the work will only use 10% of what you learn at school...

Which is understandable because they really just want you to do what is right for the role which is mostly learned while on the job.

Except I learned pretty much nothing in relation to my field through school. I wish I had gotten my degree in journalism or English with a journalism concentration.

Basically, I wasted a lot of money for a piece of paper. Many employers in my field like a degree but like experience in the field even more. The degree is really just a quick applicant weeding out tool.

It really all depends on the company. Marketing is kind of a catch-all field. Lots of people do it without having a degree in marketing or business in general.

Ok, I need to get up early tomorrow. Night everyone! <3

A degree is to get past HR, the skills get you past your coworkers

Actually, lacking an HR person/department can make hiring more difficult. People who really know a thing or two about hiring people know exactly what to ask at the interview. From my experience with bosses, they kind of know what they are looking for but usually don't know the full scope of the job that needs to be filled.

I frequently check on craigslist for jobs and it depresses me because they expect a person to be able to do a million different things on a part-time schedule at minimum wage.

And I'm not saying that bosses can't be ambitious in what they are looking for in an employee. But some people take it way too far. Like they want you to have a college degree and 2+ years of experience in the field but they will give you 15 hours a week at $7.25 an hour and no benefits.

The ambitious I meant is that they are ridiculously greedy.

Ah, I see. I know part of the problem is that the market is over-saturated with job applicants but still... It's frustrating as a full-time job seeker.

Now, seems like both employers and employees are looking for more on their perspectives.

@ Dae - Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com and Snagajob.com and indeed.com and simplyhired.com
Those are probably the top job searching sites I check every day. Craigslist is a horrible place to look for work
