I believe the black cat thing kind of came about as black cats were believed to be witch familiars. However, a quick search gives the result that black cats being bad luck was a superstition that likely started in (and is still supposedly widely believed in) Europe.
So I wouldn't start dumping all over America for a silly superstition... >.>
