I just finished reading 1984 and I did find George Orwells view on the negative utopia really interesting. Although I got lost at some parts like when there was mention of Big Brother and Goldstein with his brotherhood rebellion. I wasn't to sure if either were real and came to a conclusion that both were made up. However the whole story had an interesting idea when it came to newspeak and making up words that take out what was unneccessary in language. I have read other books like this but I think Orwell did his best job in giving us an idea of how this utopia could steal away everything that makes people human.

Has anyone else read this book and if so what were your thoughts?

I read this book a few years ago, and I only really remember being disappointed by the end. (I'm a sucker for a happy ending.) If you liked it though, I recommend Blind Faith by Ben Elton. It's another really good book about the fine line between utopia and dystopia.

Thank you. I'm a little disappointed that I couldn't find a sonic screwdriver, but other than that, I'm quite happy with it.

That would be a cool item to have for number 10 and a police box like Gaia's submersible police box.

I would recommend A Brave New World as another dystopian read, seeing as it always gets paired up with 1984 in any conversation I've had about the latter book. I found the concept of newspeak fascinating and terrifying when I first read the book. I love learning new words, and the idea of a limited vocabulary being enforced by the government is a true nightmare for me. But at the same time, I liked learning how efficient they were with said limit, with the multi-use of certain words. I love his take on the concept that if one can not use words to defend, or even identify their displeasures, then they would not be able to sway people (or even themselves) away from Big Brother.

My take of the Goldstein-Big Brother plot is that at one point, there DID exist such people, or rather, they represented real factions from the past. However, the rebellion was infiltrated and squashed, its relic now used as another side of the same corrupted coin.

Book double plus good.

I read Brave New World in high school and probably should consider reading it again. Newspeak was interesting and hard to figure out but when I read the information at the end of the book it made more sense. Yeah I figured that Goldstein and Big Brother didn't exist they just wanted people to think that which was found out at the Ministry of Love.

Ah 1984. Such a depressing book, but I LOVED it. It's a dream for those who like to interpret and find symbolism~ Ol' George was definitely making a point with that one.

Some of his predictions are coming true as well, though not in a literal form. Twitter forces us to get our point across in 140 characters or less and doesn't this sound like a Telescreen?

I am not sure since the Telescreen was there to watch everything you did.

Well of course it's not exactly the same, but the basic concept can be seen as similar.

I've not read 1984 yet, but it's actually next on my reading list. I bought it on Amazon a few weeks back :)
