I'll throw in my support for adding A Tale of Two Cities to the list. There's a lot that we could discuss in that book, and I have a copy readily available. It's also pretty classic--
The only concern with that is that a lot of people might have read it. I read it in December of 2007, but would be okay with re-reading it. :)
I've read one or two Tamora Pierce and enjoyed them. I haven't read the Wild Magic series, though.

Many books will always be good to discuss again. I like all the suggestions, and I think I'll put up a poll. I made the decision not to add those that I know have been read by at least two people here. We had a lot of suggestions, and it might be too long of a poll, otherwise.
@Tsubasa Rose: I heart Terry Pratchett. Niamh's suggestion, Wyrd Sisters, is my personal favorite. It's a Macbeth parody.

Will we be doing just the one round of voting, or will we also be doing an elimination round?
Also-- how to know when everyone has voted?
*Just as I note, I've voted. :P

Well, in other forums book groups I've seen people suggest books and they all go in one big list. Once a month, a book can be chosen from that list.
I'm assuming everyone can add to the list whenever they want. Of course if that list becomes too long that could be a problem for polling purposes. XD
So, I don't know maybe a new list could be compiled each month with whatever anyone wants to suggest. If not many suggestions are given we can resort to what was originally on the list?
I don't know, I'm just throwing ideas out there. XD
So many good books to choose from but my vote's in!

With six votes in, the following books have received at least one vote:
Quote:
Fall of a Kingdom
Magic Kingdom For Sale-- Sold
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
Shadow of the Wind
Wyrd Sisters
|
I'm not sure where we should go from there, since only one book received 2 votes, with the rest receiving one. We could:
a.) Opt for reading Shadow of the Wind
b.) Re-vote, but vote on just those 5 novels.
If we do the latter, we could have a brief descript for each book.
What do you guys think?

I think we should read Shadow of the Wind and save the others to be voted on to read later.

I just looked up The Shadow of the Wind on Amazon and it sounds really interesting. I voted for the Joyce title but I'm up for changing my vote to SoW as it sounds like something I may enjoy.

Ruiz Zafón's novel, a bestseller in his native Spain, takes the satanic touches from Angel Heart and stirs them into a bookish intrigue à la Foucault's Pendulum. The time is the 1950s; the place, Barcelona. Daniel Sempere, the son of a widowed bookstore owner, is 10 when he discovers a novel, The Shadow of the Wind, by Julián Carax. The novel is rare, the author obscure, and rumors tell of a horribly disfigured man who has been burning every copy he can find of Carax's novels. The man calls himself Laín Coubert-the name of the devil in one of Carax's novels. As he grows up, Daniel's fascination with the mysterious Carax links him to a blind femme fatale with a "porcelain gaze," Clara Barceló; another fan, a leftist jack-of-all-trades, Fermín Romero de Torres; his best friend's sister, the delectable Beatriz Aguilar; and, as he begins investigating the life and death of Carax, a cast of characters with secrets to hide. Officially, Carax's dead body was dumped in an alley in 1936. But discrepancies in this story surface. Meanwhile, Daniel and Fermín are being harried by a sadistic policeman, Carax's childhood friend. As Daniel's quest continues, frightening parallels between his own life and Carax's begin to emerge. Ruiz Zafón strives for a literary tone, and no scene goes by without its complement of florid, cute and inexact similes and metaphors (snow is "God's dandruff"; servants obey orders with "the efficiency and submissiveness of a body of well-trained insects"). Yet the colorful cast of characters, the gothic turns and the straining for effect only give the book the feel of para-literature or the Hollywood version of a great 19th-century novel.

Okay, so I went out and bought the book because even if we're going to read it or not together I want to read it. I'm only about twenty-two pages in but it's got me interested.

This is terribly exciting! I'd like for us to be able to do this book, but I'd like to have everyone all amenable to the idea and such.
Meanwhile, I have a copy.
Joie-- ought we to start in reading, if everyone's agreeable?
What should the timeline be for finishing the book?
+ 1 week
+ 2 weeks
+ 3 weeks
+ 1 month
?? Any thoughts, questions, comments, concerns?

I think three weeks. That would give me time to finish my current book and finish this one. Plus it is not rushing anyone but not taking too long.

Three weeks sounds good to me as well! *thinks*
487 pages equals an average of 163 pages per week, around 23/24 pages a day.
How about we read up to just before "City of Shadows" (around page 102 or so), and then begin discussing? That way none of us spoils parts of it for each other...
Yea, nea?

Is 'Shadow of the Wind' the final choice? I need to know whether or not to go look for it at my local library. :)

How will starting a new book help you finish a series? Or is it part of a series?

I was in the middle of a series. I was going to start this book but instead I finished the last two books in a series. It is the The Morganville Vampires series. I still have to buy the last one.

I stopped reading it for a while too because there were a few unfinished books I had that I wanted to finally get through.
It's okay though...I don't think everyone has been able to track down the book so I'm assuming it'll be a few more weeks until we can start discussing it.
