(This is a Pokemon 'fanfic'. It contains a series of notes, explaining the biology of Pokemon as if they were real creatures in this world. The author is a Professor, who had spent his life studying Pokemon in their natural habitats. This Professor and the region he lives in are made up for the sake of this nature journal. )

A Note About Pokemon, Trainers and PokeBalls

This world is inhabited by creatures we call Pocket Monsters, or Pokemon for short. These beings of elemental energy range in size, shape, power and rarity, and can be found everywhere in this world. Each Pokemon can control specific elements or abilities, which are decided by what 'Type' they are.

There are 18 different Types, and some Pokemon can belong to more than one. Every Type has their own strengths and weaknesses, and some even resist certain types as shown in the chart below.

Another marvellous thing that Pokemon are capable of is evolution, where they change forms into stronger creatures. Some Pokemon need different things in order to evolve, some can react to special stones charged with energy to 'Mega Evolve' and some never evolve at all.

The different ways Pokemon evolve are classed into 4 groups: those that evolve by levelling up their power, those that evolve while exposed to elemental stones, those that evolve through human interaction and those that evolve when special conditions are met.

People that catch and battle Pokemon are known as Trainers. They help level up their Pokemon until their energy levels are high enough to be able to learn powerful moves and/or evolve. Some Trainers test other Trainer's bonds and training by battling each other. This has developed into a challenge where rookie Trainers travel the different regions in order to take on 8 different Gym Leaders, powerful Trainers that specialise in one or two types. Once they have the badges which are rewarded to those that beat the Gym Leaders, they can proceed to challenging the Elite Four and finally the region's champion.

Trainers catch Pokemon by using PokeBalls, which convert Pokemon into their purest form; energy. They are kept inside the Ball until released by the Trainer. In this state they are easily stored in PC Boxes and transferred from person to person. By the League rules, Trainers are only allowed to keep six Pokemon on them at one time.

=Predators of the Air=

Pokemon that hunt others while flying through the air are mostly classed as Flying Type, though there are a few exceptions to this rule. These Pokemon use attacks that use the element of air, and are weak to Rock, Ice and Electric Types.

They are widely spread and are found where ever you can find their prey. They are popular choices amongst Trainers, trained as mail carries or flyers - able to carry their Trainers from city to city.

~~~~~~
Name: Pidgey
Type: Flying/Normal
Its beak and feet are pink and it has a black stripe around its eyes. It has three talons on each foot. It can be recognised by its head crest, short wings and three tail feathers.
Behaviour: Pidgey live in small flocks and generally avoid battles where they can. It has a great memory and can always remember where its nest is. When startled, it flaps its small wings to stir up dust or dirt to blind the attacker.
Habitat: Pidgey are one of the most common Flying Types and can be found in almost any region, though they are fond of warm climates.
Diet: Pidgey are omnivores and eat seeds, berries and small insects. It is a common sight in cities, where it scavenges for food and can be quite a pest in some areas.
Pidgey evolves once it reaches level 17.
~~~~~

Name: Pidgeotto

Type: Flying/Normal

Behaviour: Pidgeotto are powerful flyers, capable of easily carrying prey several miles to their nest. It has a territory of around 60 miles, which it guards fiercely. It circles its territory during the day, using its impressive eye sight to spot prey or intruders.

Habitat: Unlike its former evolution, Pidgeotto are found mainly in forests and rarely frequent cities.

Diet: Pidgeotto are mostly carnivores, eating fish, rodents, smaller birds and insects. It might eat berries and seeds when prey is scarce.

Pidgeotto evolves once it reaches level 36.

~~~~~
Name: Pidgeot
Type: Flying/Normal
Its tail feathers are entirely red and its head crest is red and golden. Its wings and head crest are even bigger than that of Pidgeotto's.
Behaviour: Its powerful wings are capable of whipping up wind storms as a way to attack foes, it also spreads its large winds to intimidate. Pidgeot's plumage is often described as beautiful, so it is a popular choice among skilled Trainers. It is capable of flying at high speeds.
Habitat: Just like Pidgeotto and unlike Pidgey, Pidgeot are found in forests and rarely seen in cities.
Diet: Pidgeot eat any prey they can carry and are fond of eating Magikarp.
Pidgeot does not evolve.
"I met Talon the Pidgeot on Route 29 in the Johto region. Then a Pidgey, he stayed by my side as I travelled the Johto region, taking on the Gym Leaders and Elite Four. He was a reliable Pokemon, which seemed to enjoy when I rode on him, travelling from city to city. We studied the various Pokemon of Kanto and Johto together, and he was always there to talk to when I felt alone. Unfortunately, Talon passed away when he grew old, and I never got to show him the world. He was the first Pokemon I ever caught and I will always remember him. My current Pidgeot, caught on Route 2 in Kalos, spends her days soaring overhead while I do my travels. This Pokemon is loyal and strong, Pidgey is a great starter Pokemon and while it may not win many tournaments, I wholly recommend you Train one for yourself."
Fearow like to protect flocks of Spearow, and will aggressively attack any that disturbs them. Because of its powerful flying abilities, it is often trained to be used as transport.
Habitat: It is common around large expanses of flat grassland but can be seen hovering over mountains and forests.
Diet: Fearow eats anything it can overpower from the sky, on both the land and sea.
Fearow doesn't evolve.
"On my many travels, I had the opportunity to observe the aggressive behaviour of Spearow and Fearow, one particular event happened in the Kanto region, where Spearow are quite common. A poor farmer had a flock of these birds ravaging his crops, and couldn't find anyway to get rid of them. He lost it one day and brought out his rifle, shooting at the Pokemon in a vain attempt to drive them away from his precious corn crops. Unfortunately for the farmer, the cries of the distressed Spearows summoned a rather large and ferocious Fearow to come to their aid. When I found the farm, it had been mostly destroyed and the poor farmer was barricaded in his house, fearing what might happen if the Fearow saw him leave his house. I managed to catch each Spearow and relocate them, and had a tough battle with their keeper, the giant Fearow. I caught him and decided to Train him up, giving him back to the farmer as a guardian of his farm. With the Fearow flying in the skies, no pest dared to enter his property and he never had problems with Spearow again.''
