We've only had it hail once here, and it was like... Tiny hail. It came down half-melted.

Hail, when compared to snow in some silly way to make it oversimplified, is basically a ball of very condensed snowflakes. They're just balls of snow that are heavier, and vary in size and weight.
Typically, they're harmless.
And sometimes there are freak occurrences where hail is the size of a golf-ball and smashes through car windshields.
