The 50 Book Challenge is a reading experience where you aim to read 50+ books each year. Users come together in our hangout thread to discuss literature, get recommendations, and give support to everyone in the Challenge.

I don't know about you guys, but all these great airships and sprokets are getting me in the mood for science fiction and fantasy novels! A little technology and imagination never hurt anyone.

Feel free to discuss any books that have even a touch of fantasy or sci-fi!

Science Fiction Novel of the Day

We by Yevgeny Zamyatin

This novel is near and dear to my heart.
After Zamyatin's personal experiences with the Russian Revolutions, he imagined a world where individuality is destroyed. In an urban nation made of glass (so that the not-so-secret police can keep tabs on you, of course), D-503 begins to question his place in society. With the help of I-330, a unique and enticing woman, he begins his own personal revolution.

Past Books of the Day

Dune by Frank Herbert
The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers
R Is For Rocket by Ray Bradbury
Time Enough for Love by Heinlein

Yay reading! ^^
This event made me think of one of my Star Wars books; Rouge Planet by Greg Bear. Just the building and the sneaking around got me thinking of it.

I've never read any Stars Wars stuff.
Never seen the films either.

But they always look like good fun.

I saw this thread and instantly thought 'yay!' I've been reading a lot of classic sci-fi lately, primarily Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" series. I'm almost finished with the last book in the set, and I'd recommend every one of them!

Isaac Asimov is great!
He's probably the first author that everyone should add to their science fiction library.

I've never read him, but that name sounds familiar. Guess I have something new to look into.

Asimov was incredibly prolific during his lifetime, too--it would take quite some time to read EVERYthing he's written. Especially since he wrote across several genres, including fiction and nonfiction on multiple topics. XD His books tend to be very 'easy to read,' though, because his narrative style is so straightforward.

Am enjoying being out of school and able to follow up on book recommendations.

I just finished Time Powers' The Anubis Gates, which was great fun! Time travel, magic, monsters, Byron... what's not to like?

I used to love YA science fiction. But once I moved away from YA, I never seemed to get back into the genre...

I don't read much. My step mom and my sister can read super fast, and i read very slowly compared to them...so when i read i take forever, and it makes me feel stupid x.x

I've enticed a Suona into my trap! Hooray! :boogie:

@Starkeyy
Don't worry about it, everyone reads at a different pace. I'm actually willing to bet that your mom and sister skim more often than they actually read - When people go faster, they tend to breeze through books without absorbing a whole lot. It's not any better than taking your time and enjoying it.

I know that I tend to skim sometimes. I'll read through a few pages and then stop to think "Wait...what the hell just happened?" And that's when I have to turn back the page and start all over again.

oh, fantasy and sci-fi. How I have a list for you guys.
sci-fi:
Rama by Arthur C. Clark
the first of a 3 book series. when a large cylindrical object enters the solar system at speeds higher than ever thought possible, a group of scientists is sent to explore the mysterious vessel

I Robot by Isacc Asimov
The first book of Isacc Asimov's robot series, it is essentially a collection of short stories all following a similar theme, involving the "3 laws of robotics" (sorry, but I don't know the names of the rest of the series, it's about a detective with a robot partner. more like the movie)

Foundation by Isacc Asimov
I have yet to read this book series, so I cannot give an adequate description of this, I am sorry.

Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Imagine a world in which reading is illegal, a world where not only books, but the houses that contain them, are burnt. A world where "fireman" is not someone who puts out fires, but starts them, burning and destroying litterature of any type. This is the world that Ray Bradbury transports you too in his amazing novel Farenheit 451.

And that's all for the sci fi, I've got another list of fantasy that I'm going to post soon.
