Jess scrambled after him, keeping up easily. "Do you have any clue where it's actually taking you?" she asked, frowning at him briefly.

"Nope," the Doctor replied. "But we'll find out soon, won't we?"

Marie followed Jess, trying to ignore her growing headache.

"You're a little nuts," Jess said. She paused when the sonic pointed them at her and Marie's house. "And your little thing is totally nuts."

Jack kept pace with Marie, though he also paused when he noticed where it was pointing. "Well, that's odd. Hiding any Time Lords in your closet?"

"No more than usual," the Doctor replied as he went right into the house, still following the sonic.

"None that I'm aware of," Marie said, watching as the Doctor waltzed right through the door. It was definitely weird that his little gadget had brought them back home.

"Hey, I locked that door when we left," Jess said as she followed him. "The hell did you just do?"

Jack sighed. "Sorry about him, he gets a little weird and intense sometimes," he said. "Been alone too much. He's a good guy, though, really."

"Sonicked it," the Doctor said. "Simple matter, really, it was only a mechanical lock." He waved the sonic around again, and it pointed him upstairs.

"Weird doesn't quite cover it," Marie said, raising an eyebrow.

"Oi! Our bedrooms are up there!" Jess ran after him. "Would you stop that? I can find whatever it is if it's in my house."

"...You're right, it really doesn't," Jack said with a grin and a shrug. "You get used to him."

"You have no idea what I'm even looking for," the Doctor pointed out. "I have no idea what I'm even looking for. I'll know it when the sonic finds it." Once he was in the upstairs hall, he waved the sonic around again. When it indicated a room, he went in. The sonic seemed to home right in on a jewelry box on the dresser, and he went over and opened it, rooting through it. He stopped when he found an old pocket watch on a chain.

"So you say," Marie said. She pressed her fingers to her forehead as her headache throbbed more.

Jess leaned back against the wall, rubbing her forehead. Her head was pounding now, and she couldn't quite ignore it anymore. "What did you find?" she managed to ask.

"Easy does it," Jack said, taking her arm and steering her over to a chair. "Try to relax. I'll get you some water." He made sure she wasn't about to leap to her feet again before he went into the kitchen.

"Something impossible," the Doctor said, gently picking up the pocket watch. It practically pulsed with time energy, and he knew exactly what it really was. "Whose is this?"

"God I wish this headache would stop," Marie muttered, pressing the heels of her palms to her forehead. The pressure eased the throbbing, but only slightly. "No idea where it came from, either..."

"I don't know, it's just a family heirloom or something," Jess said with a shrug. "It's just an old watch, it's been up here since we moved in."

"Migraine? Those can just jump on you," Jack suggested, handing her a glass of water. "Or culture shock, could be that too."

"It's in your jewelry box and you don't know whose it is?" the Doctor pressed. He studied her for a moment. "Do you even know if it works?" That was the best way he could figure out if she'd ever opened the watch.

"I don't know," Marie said. "But my head is pounding." She accepted the glass, taking a few small sips and then just holding the glass to her forehead. It was cool and solid and felt amazing.

"No idea, we never bothered to touch them," Jess said with a shrug. "I mean, they're old, we just kinda hung on to them. Sentimental value, I guess."

Jack rubbed her shoulder a bit, glancing up the stairs. "Want anything else for now?"

"Them?" the Doctor repeated. "There are more?" What were the odds of there being even two of them? The chances had to be absolutely microscopic.

"Not right now, but thanks," Marie said, just sitting there with her eyes closed and the cold glass against her forehead.

"Two watches," Jess said, shaking her head a bit. "They're both in that box." She walked over and rooted around for a moment before plucking out the other watch. It was the first time she'd held it for a long time, and she noticed a faint pulsing against her hand.

"Two of them," the Doctor murmured. He looked at the watch in his hand, and then at her. "And you've never thought to open these?"

"No," Jess said slowly. "Never. I figured it was just a busted antique. I thought about selling them a few times, but I never actually got around to it."

"No, I doubt you would have," the Doctor replied. He put away the sonic. "How do you know it's broken if you've never opened it?"

"Just a guess." Jess shrugged. "Like I said. I don't actually know for sure." She eyed him. "Why are you so interested in these?"

"It's... complicated," the Doctor replied. "These are what are causing the space-time wrinkle, though. And it won't stop until these are opened and the energy is released." He looked at her. "I was right, there are two Time Lords around here, but they're... under cover, you could say, and they have no idea they even are."

"Two Time Lords? I thought you said there weren't any others?" Jess frowned at him, absently curling her fingers around the watch in her hand. "Besides, these are just a couple of old watches, nothing special about them."

"Until today, I thought I was the last one," the Doctor said. He looked at her. "Open the watch. You'll understand what I'm talking about then."

Jess frowned at him and looked back at the watch in her hands. She had no idea what he was talking about, but it was just a watch. She might as well open it. Right?

So she took a deep breath and opened the watch. Immediately golden time energy swirled around her, illuminating her for a few moments, before it all pelted down the stairs and slammed into Marie instead.

The Doctor watched as the time energy exploded out of the watch, but it surprised him when it went straight for Marie instead.

Marie gasped when the energy hit her, and for a moment, all she could see was gold. Then all of the knowledge that had been locked away poured back into her head, and for a split second, it felt like her body had disintegrated and then reformed again, a bit different than before.

Jack froze when he saw the time energy. "Doctor?" he called when it all eased into Marie. She looked fine, a little shocked maybe, but fine otherwise. And if he was right, it meant that Marie wasn't human anymore.

"Was that supposed to do something?" Jess asked dryly.
