. . . .
This is the beginning...

Trey walked along the streets with his hands in the pockets of the oversized jacket he wore. Despite his teenaged body, he felt more akin in age to the stone structures that filled the center of this French town. Maybe that wasn't a true analogy, but he couldn't say exactly how old Calais was in the first place with it's mix of ancient structures and those newly built after the last war razed it to the ground. Once, a long time ago, he saw Calais from the other side of the strait of Dover, looking a bit like a shining jewel in a sunset. He never intended to get this close again.

It happened a bit by accident he supposed. For many years, Japan was his home, but at the start of World War two, Trey found refuge among the islands north of Europe. The world mostly left him alone there, but Trey hated the cold and left as soon as the world calmed itself. Food there tasted lean, like the people the blood came from.

Lifting his head to scent the wind, he revealed the small fangs in his mouth. This city was nothing but lean. No matter how hard he tried to stay away from this corner of Europe, he went and walked right into it. Did his feet know the way even if he never walked here before? Trey never actually set foot in France until now, only saw it from across the water. Catching the scent of a healthy male out late for a smoke and stroll, he changed his course toward the watch tower. Maybe he just missed humans despite not being one himself. They called to him with their warm blood and he didn't care enough about them not to follow.

Feet almost silent on the pavement, he went to feed.

Adam told himself this time would be the last time. This was the same promise he made to himself he made the last time this happened. He'd nearly been discovered and so, had to drop his life where it was and start fresh in another country once more. It was lonely nights like these that he desperately missed her.

The thing he hated the most about leaving his old lives behind and picking up a new one was that he had to leave behind his music every time, only carrying with him one or two instruments. He had a fondness for music, after all, being a musician was in his blood. His most previous feed, (that was rather sloppy and almost cost him his life) made him realize that he needed to be more careful. Should he feed again without properly disposing the body, he'd certainly be caught.

Adam played this song a million times before, he knew every note as though it were burned into his mind. He didn't even need his sheet music. It didn't take long for him to be hired by a little French pub to play some live music for people to dance to. Adam didn't consider himself to be much of a singer, but he could carry a tune and play the piano beautifully. Well, he should, after all, he spent centuries studying music in all forms.

He played and allowed the music to wander, through the open door of the pub, into the near empty streets of Calais. Sometimes he wondered why he did this to himself, then he remembered, being a musician is what helped keep him fed for centuries. After all, he enjoyed drinking the women the best and they flocked to anyone who could play a piano and sing a few songs about romance and lost loves. In another hour or so, the pub would close and he'd bring a lovely French woman home, drink her and go to sleep.

Still, he couldn't say he didn't love his work. Playing music was what he loved. His French wasn't too bad and as he sang he eyed the dancing folks with hungry eyes, trying to figure out which one would be the one he'd pick. Though he was lonely, singing and playing was something that made him feel much closer to her than anything else in the ever-changing world.

Trey's sharp ears picked up the sound of voices along with other smells. Alcohol? Good, then he picked the right location. He didn't much care for the taste of intoxication, but he found those people easiest to catch. Humans had a funny theory that a vampire could mesmerize its prey and drink so easily. If such a vampire existed, it was not him. Surely enough, a fair amount of people showed interest in him, but he couldn't seem to lure anyone in much of anyone, especially with words. The second he opened his mouth, he ruined it. Drunks really did work best.

Stopping along the side wall of a club, he eyed a group of three that just walked out the door. One of them had a bleeding elbow, the scent that drew him here. No way to separate one out for a kill though. He hadn't been playing at this long enough to perfect his art. Or did he just not care? He didn't exactly get turned yesterday, but still. Sighing, Trey was about to slink away when the open door gave him a good earful of the music playing inside. He couldn't help himself and paused for a listen.

Whoever played did so with a soulfulness that Trey couldn't ignore. Over his years, he continued to develop his love for melodies and different instruments he never got to experience in his life. No one took the time to teach him music until after he became a vampire and even then, he found little chance to play. What would it be like to spent a lifetime perfecting such a skill as this? Trey had almost wandered in the doorway when a drunk stumbled right into him.

"Pardon!" the young man exclaimed, almost knocking Trey over. He grunted back and retreated a few steps, but the drunk followed after him. "Have you seen a tall blonde?" he asked. Trey hadn't. He opened his mouth, almost said as much, then amended himself.

"...Yes. Here." With that, he led the man back behind the pub.

The smell alone was enough to make Adam stop playing mid-song... That smell, he'd smelled it before. It smelled a lot like her. She couldn't be here, she died... He watched her. She was gone, but this smell... He never met anyone else who smelled like she did. He searched the room for the person emitting the smell but was only welcomed with confused glances.

"Adam?" One of the ladies asked, "What's up, why did you stop?"

Adam watched the doorway as a shadow of a person disappeared around back. The smell disappeared with it. Looking up at the woman, Adam tried his best to play it off... He was never exactly the smoothest with thinking on his feet. He stumbled through mumbling a sentence,

"I thought there was a bug..." Adam turned to face the piano, "It was nothing." And he continued playing as though he'd never stopped. At this moment, he realized just how much he missed her... Wow, thinking that he could still smell her. Still, no one he'd ever met smelled like that and he felt something strange in the pit of his stomach... Something was definitely afoot.

The drunk never saw it coming. Not from a person like Trey. He left the body where he finished, only rolling him part way behind some trash cans lining the alley. Trey couldn't do much more and even if he could, he wouldn't feel bothered to do it. Licking the last of the blood from his lips, he headed where he'd been before he got distracted--toward the water.

Rather than deal with the citizens of this place, he found an abandoned building to spend his days. He traveled with a few things and finished outfitting the new home with what money he did have. The shelves became lined in blankets and pillows, a thick sheet draped over to block out the rest of the light. It was a perfectly cozy little home to someone like him. No one bothered him and the darkness soothed him whenever he felt frayed.

Now, he crawled into the little space and tucked himself up into a ball. Yes, he liked this. Silence, solitude. Wasn't it good he got turned into a vampire? All the things he loved seemed to come with the territory. So long as he knew people moved around somewhere in the distance, like the docks that just barely brought noise to his ears, then he could feel at ease. Despite the sunrise still being hours off, he laid down for an early rest.

(I am so sorry this ended up being so long! I tried to shorten it up a little and I cut it off a little prematurely to make it a little shorter..)

"Ooh la la, Adam..." One woman approached Adam from behind and gave him a hug, to which, Adam flinched and groaned softly. He hated touching people, especially humans. "You play so beautifully. Ohh, I wish I could hear you play for me all the time. It's too bad this bar closes so early."

"Too bad, indeed."Adam groaned, still, he knew should he get fed today he needed to put on his, 'I'm at least semi-engaged in this conversation' face and be pleasant enough to escort this woman... "home". "I have a wide array of instruments at my home, perhaps you'd be interested if-" But Adam was caught off guard as the owner of the pub approached Adam with an angry face.

"Adam, I need to speak with you alone for a moment."

Now, Adam was starving by now and he'd had his hopes set on drinking a beautiful woman, but should his boss take too long, he'd simply make a meal of him and leave the job without saying anything. He'd certainly miss playing the piano here and getting quick, easy meals, but when he was hungry his common sense and his slickness usually left him.

He followed the rather thick, older gentleman into one of the back rooms. His boss didn't look pleased and Adam couldn't figure out the reason for this. Still, when the older man closed the door, Adam sat down at the table across from him and listened for all of three minutes to what the man had to say,

"Adam, I'm a big fan of your music... However, lately people have been coming here at nights to dance... not to drink or eat. I made less this month than I have last month or the month before and... well, I can't afford to pay you anymore. I think, perhaps, your talents would be better suited in a daytime cafe."

Now, Adam couldn't think clearly. The man said something about a cafe and daytime, two things which Adam honestly couldn't do. He'd burn in the daylight and cafes were just not his style. Adam stood up from where he was sitting and began to approach the elderly man with his eyes wide. The owner didn't seem to notice anything,

"I've also had the police snooping around here lately, Adam, do you know what that could be..." He trailed off as Adam came closer with his fangs clearly showing. Adam was very pleased to find out that his boss was not a screamer and that even though he didn't have the sweet, tangy blood of a young female, he was still pretty satisfying.

When Adam was finished, he opened the door and checked to see if everyone had left the establishment. He was glad to see that they had. He grabbed a plastic trash bag and wiggled the owner's body into it. All the while, thinking, finally, about how stupid it was to drink the owner of the bar. This man had family who'd certainly look for him after a few weeks... Oh well. Not much he could do about it now.

After the body was shoved into the bag, Adam picked it up in his arms and left through the back door which led into the alleyway. There, Adam picked up that smell once again... That smell of her. Adam dropped the body and nearly panicked for a moment, thinking maybe she'd come back from the dead, or thinking that her spirit had found him. Instead, he came to realize that he was, in fact, alone and that the smell was simply lingering. Maybe it was all in his head. He made his way towards the trashcans to dispose of the body, but he was greeted by the site of another body laying there behind the trash.

Now, this was curious. Adam threw away the body of the owner and then curiously decided to examine the body he'd found behind the trash... The body honestly reeked of that smell and he had to get a closer look. His fingers immediately touched the man's head and he tilted it to expose the neck. Just as he had expected, there was the telltale signs of vampire stuck in the man's neck and Adam's imagination ran wild. Maybe she really was alive and she'd come back for him!

Adam's heart pounded in his chest and he found himself stunned into silence. He'd began to give up hope that he'd ever see her again, after all, he knew he'd live quite a long time being a vampire. He made his way back into the quiet streets and towards his home, which was a rather small apartment across the street of a condemned building.

Adam was rather glad to know that maybe all the funeral music he'd written hadn't been in vain.

As Trey left the body, it didn't take the day goers long to find it. A man walked past, finishing the last of his cigarette when he just about stepped on a hand that stuck out past the trashcan. In a matter of minutes, a swarm of police closed the area off. They found the second body wrapped up in the trash not long after when looking for the first victim's ID. That they didn't find, but the owner of the pub was quickly identified, leaving more red flags where the police already had some. The same killer obviously did this strange deed. Whispers went through the police, coming to the same conclusion. Vampire.

But the captain stayed practical. They already considered this pub a center for the reports of missing individuals. They would increase their watchfulness and the questioning. No doubt, the killer was connected to this pub somehow. Maybe a customer or maybe an employee. He would make sure to find out.

When the twilight broke, Trey woke slowly and unaware of the troubles that came with the daylight hours. To him, just another boring night started. What should he do? Since he had no real aim, an hour after the sun fully disappeared under the horizon, he wandered out into the empty lot, wrapped up in a jacket and scarf as usual. The night air didn't really feel that cool, but it couldn't be called warm either. No, it was just a damp night air with too much breeze coming from over the channel.

Trey walked that way, aiming for the water's edge away from the shipping traffic and the more obvious signs of humanity. On a clear night like this, he could see the ghost of those white cliffs on the other side, seeming to rise up out of nothing. He crouched down with his bare toes against the water and wished he still carried the shamisen he grew so proficient at while in Japan. The sound would suit this quiet air so beautifully. Or perhaps a flute, but he never did like instruments that required air.

Sleep was hard to come by when you know that you need to wake up just before the sun goes down to pack your things and get out of town. Adam tossed and turned all day, never finding a comfortable spot in bed. The sun was out and yet, he was still so wide awake. Finally, Adam slid out of bed, having been too anxious and vigilant to rest anyway, he decided to start packing his things. He'd have to leave behind all of his beloved instruments again.

His instruments were almost like children to him, and it pained Adam to have to leave them behind every time he did something stupid. He thought about donating them, or simply destroying them completely. Neither of those options were good, as he had no time to find a place that would accept donated instruments, and he neither had the capabilities of destroying the instruments in this apartment complex.

When the sun finally hid it's face and retreated beneath the dark horizon, Adam left. He felt rather saddened and lonely, but such is life. With him he had only one instrument small enough to carry with him and that was a small, lonely violin. It was actually one of the few instruments that he'd managed to keep while traveling from place to place. As he kept to the shadows mostly, he avoided contact and avoided being in plain sight of any human wandering the streets at night... anyone who'd be wandering the streets at this hour were only nosy police officers and detectives. Adam didn't need to be bothered with the likes of them.

As Adam approached the waters to the channel, Adam thought about crossing over to Dover, maybe laying low there for a few years until the murder was forgotten... But he loved France, and he'd already lived everywhere in the United Kingdom. There was no place else to go. He approached the channel a little more closely and there, he smelled that same, familiar smell once more. It drove him mad because he couldn't figure out where the smell was coming from. Was it her ghost? Was it really her, returned from the dead?!

Adam followed the scent a little more closely, still cautious. He stopped when he came to see a shadowy figure off in the distance....

"Evelyn...?" He whispered. The shadowy figure didn't look at all like her, still, and he didn't want to raise his voice to call out to her. "Eve?" But he was too cautious and a little bit too paranoid to come any closer. He knew if it was Eve, she'd hear him.

Curiously, Adam stepped back into the shadows and set down his few belongings. He then sat down beside his belongings and took out the violin, still resting in its case. He opened the case, looked at it from all angles for a moment, just to study it, and began to play as softly as he could. It wasn't anything too special that he played, just one of the funeral pieces he'd written for Eve. He hoped, that even if it wasn't Eve, and if it was just his longing for her that was playing tricks on him, that he'd still have the chance to play the new piece he'd written for her in this beautiful city before leaving.

The moon looked hazy through a few clouds. What light came through from the stars looked scattered and faint, like someone smudged the sky with their fingers. For a while, Trey just stared up at it. He wanted to slip down and get in the water, but he feared he'd do something stupid and keep swimming. He might end up in Dover and then what would he do. He shivered, blaming the cool air as he tried to pull away from his thoughts.

Just as he was about to walk away from the channel, something strange reached his nose. Trey wrinkled his, completely taken aback. A new kind of smell? What was it? It reminded him of human, of the pulsing and warm scent of blood, but sweeter and just...different. All he knew, he wanted to smell more of it very much. He turned, stepping closer to the scent's origin. For a second, he thought he heard something carried on the wind, but it wasn't until he took a few more steps that the music started. Familiar? Why was it familiar?

Keeping as quiet and out of the way as possible, Trey snuck around toward the source and soon discerned a figure from the shadows. So it was a human after all? His fangs came out in readiness for this strange situation though he wasn't the least bit hungry. Snapping into action, he rushed forward to drop both hand in the figure's lap as he leaned forward to get one big sniff. He blinked and pulled back slightly, his brow furrowed. "You're not human."

Adam wasn't startled by the abrupt intrusion of his space by this... stranger. The first emotion he could register was disappointment.

"And you're..." Not Evelyn. His tongue didn't finish the sentence and the words just died on his tongue. HE couldn't figure out what thoughts were going through his head. Sadness? Anger? Fear? This person smelled so much like her, how was it, that they smelled so alike when this man... this very young man probably had no relations to Evelyn. It was odd. Still, his curiosity was suppressed by this horribly, heavy despair.

Adam slowly set down the violin and stared at the person in front of him with intensity in his eyes, trying to find all of the answers to his questions in those eyes of his. He couldn't read the stranger and let out a soft sigh when the disappointment kicked his ass again.

"Why do you smell like that...?" He wasn't really thinking when he asked that question. He wasn't really meaning to ask it, instead the words rather slipped out. He wasn't really asking the person in front of him, rather, he was asking a rhetorical question. Adam felt awkward, why did this stranger smell like her? Why was he feeling nervous and suddenly really, very protective of this young man? Something about him made Adam feel an overwhelming security in his presence. Something Adam couldn't quite place.

Trey stared at the stranger with a blank, but intense expression. He stared like that, not giving away any of his thoughts. In reality, his heart beat a little fast though. What was he doing? He shuffled back a little more, not comfortable to be in another's personal space. Or have someone in his. Whichever way. After a minute, the other's question hit him and his brow furrowed slightly with confusion.

"Smell like what?" he asked, lifting one sleeve to sniff. It didn't seem like an odd smell to him. He just smelled like he always did. But then, this other guy also smelled unique, so with his usual bluntness, Trey turned the question back on him. "Don't you smell too." What he mean to ask though, was just who he was, or what. Because he kinda didn't follow the oddness going on.

Rubbing the cold from his arms, Trey continued to stare. He should probably leave, but in the end, he just couldn't. Maybe he was waiting for this other man to do something significant. He couldn't say what he wanted, but he felt he'd know it when it happened. He could always figure out things after they already happened.

The complete abnormality of the situation made it awkward for Adam to compose himself. He almost got offended when the stranger suggested that he smelled as well. He'd never considered that he had any sort of strange smell, not unless one would count him smelling like Evelyn. Then, he put two and two together. He could only smell Evelyn after he was turned, maybe this stranger didn't smell like Evelyn... But they smelled like,

"A vampire!" Adam eyes went wide and his jaw dropped. He thought he'd go the rest of his long, painful life without ever meeting another vampire. It was exciting and scary at the same time. Adam was a little relieved, knowing he wouldn't be the only one to spend an eternity on earth, cursed to drink blood and lurk in the shadows. "You're cold." Adam stated. He turned away from the stranger to dig through his haversack and pulled out a sweater. It was the only one that Adam owned, he traveled light when he moved homes, after he had little choice.

He offered his sweater to the stranger, this young man didn't look like he had very many items with him, didn't look like he was going anywhere in particular and didn't look as though he belonged anywhere. Adam felt compelled by compassion to help, though he didn't want to admit that his heart went out to this young man, whom reminded him so much of his lost love.

Adam was never very good with formalities. Still, he thought to introduce himself would be a decent start. "I'm Adam." And that was all he said.

Trey blinked slow. A vampire. Oh...right. He did guess immediately that this other person was not human, so why not be a vampire? Especially since he didn't seem the least bit bothered by being called not human. Opening his mouth, Trey tried to say something, but lacked the words. He never actually met another vampire before. How should he react? He could feel tension grow in himself along with the desire to back off and run.

When the guy started to rummage around and pulled something out, he tensed and knocked the offered hand back, his breath strangled before he saw the sweater. Hesitantly, after a number of seconds, he took it. "Thanks," he answered without any inflection in his voice. He draped the sweater over his shoulders though, letting the warm cloth dwarf him. It felt nice considering his own long sleeved shirt only did so much and it had a pleasant odor. The feeling eased him considerably.

"Trey," he offered back after a hum in acknowledgment of the other's name. After a second more of pause, he looked around the harbor with curiosity and a little bit of awkwardness before almost meeting Adam's eyes. Really, he looked just below them though, at mouth level. "Why are you here?"

Adam sighed, he didn't want to think about what he had been doing there in Calais, or what he'd been doing for the last few decades, to be honest. So many things have been happening it was a shame he had to spend the years simply feeding and fleeing from place to place. He couldn't think of an answer, and quite frankly, it was none of Trey's business why Adam was there.

"That doesn't concern you." He didn't mean to sound rude or anything, it just come out that way. He lost eye contact with Trey and looked down at his feet for a few minutes. The awkwardness set in his head and he tried to say something else to make himself seem less rude, "I've just... Been traveling a lot lately." He changed the subject rather quickly, hoping that Trey wouldn't press the issue,

"You look thin." Adam didn't want to ask Trey if he'd been getting meals lately, he didn't want to baby the young man. He simply made an observation, hoping Trey would fill in the details for himself. It was a rather chilly night, and it puzzled Adam why Trey would only have a long sleeve shirt in this weather.

Adam turned and set his little violin back in its case, sliding the strap of his haversack over his shoulder. "Do you need money?"

Trey's lips pulled down in a faint smile. Something a person would have to look carefully to see. Despite being closed off himself, he didn't like being denied the information he asked for since he asked for it. That was how this should work. "Traveling?" After a couple seconds, he put everything together and realized that Adam must be here at this harbor now because he planned to leave. He would travel away from here right after they met. And didn't it seem like he was running? Trey's lips pulled down just a little more.

"Always look that way," he snapped back in answer. Not necessarily because he felt angry to be asked such a thing, but because he didn't want to discuss his looks. He spent a long time upset about the body he got stuck with for the rest of eternity it seemed. He assumed he got eternity like this, though no one ever explained it to him. He crossed his arms, his fingers hidden deep in his sleeves as he shook his head. "Don't need money. Why? Do you?"

Trey paused, his eyes narrowing. Wasn't this guy leaving? If he was, he should do it sooner rather than later. Just hurry up and go before anyone gets attached. He didn't say that, but he tried to express that very clearly with his expression without telling the other man to go, in case he actually did. Because it would be fine if he didn't, but Trey didn't think he would stay.

"Traveling." Adam repeated. He didn't feel the need to explain more, he didn't know Trey well enough, and simply the fact that he was another like him that didn't automatically equate to trustworthy. Still, Adam was more interested in Trey than he was in those horrible, murderous humans. Trey looked so young, it made Adam question if he was a newborn vampire or if he'd been turned at a young age...

Adam snorted when Trey sounded defensive. He was only curious... one could even go as far to say that Adam wanted to help Trey. The young man looked lonely... and in a sense, Adam was lonely too. Adam didn't mean to sound like a jerk by picking on the way Trey looked, still, Adam couldn't understand how what he said may have possibly offended Trey. Adam chose to ignore Trey's little snarky question.

A flashing red light in the far distance made Adam's blood run cold. He needed to get out of Calais and quickly. As much as he wanted to stay and pick Trey's mind, he knew that soon the police would be looking for him and would probably question him. This wasn't the first time he'd messed up. He knew the routine pretty well by now, still, he was always afraid that one day they'd discover his secret and kill him in cold blood like they did Evelyn. Humans may have come a long way, but they were still the same evil, heartless zombies that were afraid of all that they couldn't understand.

Adam was tempted to rip the sweater from Trey's shoulders and walk away back towards the harbor in hopes of finding a way out of this city... But Trey looked warm, and though Adam didn't show it much, he wasn't heartless. "It's not safe here for someone like you." Adam said as he tugged on the straps of his haversack, slowly walking away from Trey. As he walked he looked over his shoulder and spoke, "I'd suggest leaving."

Just like Trey expected, the other man turned to walk away all too soon. They were two passerbys of five minutes, like how the sun and the stars used to greet. The sudden memory of that made Trey pause for a second. He hadn't thought about the sun in years, knowing of it only as a curse to his current existence. He didn't think he particularly missed it.

Not moving from his spot, he called out after Adam. "Why?" He raised his voice to its loudest yet in the conversation, which probably didn't amount to loud. Still, it should have easily reached the other man. "You should learn to stay." He didn't quite know why he said that, but the words felt right and real. Perhaps he sensed that Adam always left. Maybe he could see it in the way he walked.

Trey bit his lip and ducked his head. He wanted to stay, but he also very badly wanted to follow Adam despite the fact that he liked to be alone. It was a very strange feeling. Should he stay or should he go? One word would send him either direction, but at that moment, his feet felt stuck and he muttered to himself under his breath. Why was he always like this? He never made decisions unless pushed, but that didn't mean he didn't like being pushed. "....stay...." he muttered very low under his breath.

Adam stopped mid step. Something about Trey tugged at his heartstrings and made him want to turn around and talk longer with the young man... But Adam fought the urge and stayed in place. He didn't turn around, but talked to Trey anyway,

"No place remains safe." He willed himself to take another step, "We aren't meant to stay in one place..." He turned around, walking backwards as he looked at Trey, who was slowly getting smaller and smaller in his vision. Trey looked lost, Adam wanted to help, he truly did, but he knew in his heart he couldn't stay. His was a wandering soul, not meant to stay in one place for too long.

Adam's feet finally came to a stop and he stood a few feet away from Trey. He sucked in a deep breath and slowly let it out through his nose. "Trey...? You're alone. I'll make a deal with you, either you keep the sweater and I leave, or you come along and I get my sweater back." Adam knew it didn't leave Trey a ton of options, but he figured this way, since Trey seemed so lonely, whether he went or stayed, Trey would have something from someone else to keep him from being as lonely.

Meant to always move? Trey watched the other man start to leave and knew it was over, even if he didn't agree. He could argue, but he didn't. Just when he felt sure he would be alone again, Adam paused and unexpected words came out of his mouth. For a minute, Trey just regarded him. Sweater or follow? Didn't that sound like a strange deal, or it did to him at least. Very few people made any sort of deal with him like that. Or gave him gifts in the first place unless they were older females.

After the period of silence, Trey said one word. "Okay." He made up his mind, though the answer didn't show which way. Not considering that, he forced his feet to move after a second. Having been given two options that forced a decision, only then did he make one. Coming to stand in front of Adam, he wriggled back out of the sweater and held it out without another word. "I'm coming."

In all honesty, Adam would have just bought Trey his own sweater. He had plenty of money to spare. The years he'd spent collecting money and saving it for times like these were worth it. He got to travel a lot this way, even though he hated having to start over fresh each time. When Trey came to stand in front of Adam, he simply gave what looked kind of like a smile if one did a double take, and he kept walking towards the pier.

He had to admit, he was glad Trey was coming along. He hadn't had a companion since Evelyn and it would be great to finally have someone he could talk to. Sure, he talked with the day walkers, but it wasn't the same, they were food while Trey was a... Er, could become, a friend.

After a few steps, Adam turned to Trey again, "You don't have to take the sweater off this very second." Adam turned away from Trey again and when he finally reached the harbor, he stopped, threw off his haversack and dug through it. He pulled out a map of Europe and tried to find an easy route to leave Calais. There weren't too many p, though, compared to a century ago, there were plenty. Still, Adam decided on taking the fastest route. He and Trey could catch a ride down the Seine River and take up new lives in Paris. That city was certainly big enough that they'd blend in easily.

Adam didn't tell Trey that once they arrived at their destination, he planned they'd go their separate ways. Adam liked Trey, though he'd never admit it, but he was a lone wolf. He preferred to be on his own, and even though a Trey was pleasant company, he didn't want that responsibility of Trey's wellbeing in his shoulders. He could be very overprotective of the things (and people) he values.

"We'll ride the river down the Paris." Adam told Trey. "It'll have to be an overnight trip." Adam folded the map and shoved it back into his haversack. He slipped it back over his shoulder and made his way to the docks of the harbor, seeing a transport boat sailing in.

For a second, Trey just blinked at the sweater he proffered like he was supposed to. But Adam didn't honor that. He said this was a choice, but then didn't act like that. Though as miffed by that as he felt, he didn't say anything. A second more and he snuggled back up in the sweater before following in Adam's footsteps. Staying a couple steps behind, he made no moves to catch up and reach his side. Trey preferred to shadow.

Crossing his arms, he watched Adam look at the map. Honestly Trey would just pick a direction and walk, eventually hitching a ride here and there, no planning. Though until recently, he did very little travel. "Paris...?" he muttered, his voice too quiet for most people to hear. Just the thought of the city left him uneasy. Wasn't it big? And full of such strange people? Just for a second, he turned over his shoulder to look back at Calais' lights, all pretty and warm behind him. He liked this water and this city, but he also liked Adam and never having been given advice before, he took it seriously. If a vampire was meant to move on and stay away from humans, he should heed that.

"Wait. You walk too fast," Trey added as they once again started moving. Short legs only went so far. He kept trailing right after Adam though.

Adam didn't slow down for Trey. He had to admit, somewhere deep in his body he felt the need for care for the young man. However, he didn't feel the need to baby him. If Trey wanted to come along, he'd have to keep up. If anything, Adam only quickened his pace. Just before reaching the dock, he turned his head and called out to Trey,

"Do you play...?" Adam asked. He came to a quick halt at the end of the dock, waiting for Trey to catch up. "An instrument? Di you play an instrument?" Adam was hoping Trey would say yes, but if he didn't Adam wouldn't mind teaching Trey. They had an eternity to spend, anyway, may as well spend it doing something productive.

The truth was, Adam had hoped that Trey would play with him. He shared an overwhelming love for music that he wanted to share with Trey. Music was in Adam's veins, he didn't have blood, he had melodies. He inhaled scales, exhaled arpeggios. Music was the one and only way Adam could fully express himself. He was never good with words or with feelings, music gave him an outlet.

He looked at Trey, still fighting the urge to rip the sweater from the young man's shoulders. As much as Adam wanted to help Trey, he still had a harm time getting used to sharing his possessions with another. The second they got to Paris, he'd buy Trey his own sweater. Paris would be such a better place for them. More people meant it would be easier to blend in and fade out in the background. Meant more food skulking in the streets. Meant more fun. At least to Adam, who held a firm grudge against humans, he enjoyed the struggle. Though, he wasn't sure about Trey, if he had to guess, he'd say when he mentioned Paris, Trey seemed a little reluctant.

Still, that wasn't Adam's problem. If Trey didn't want to come along he didn't have to.

Trey narrowed his eyes into the slightest of a glare when Adam continued to walk so fast. He had no common courtesy, not like they taught in schools and homes. Or at least he'd been taught. He still remembered that much, but Trey pushed the thoughts away before he could ponder on the past any longer than a half second. They reached the docks and Trey looked around, trying to figure out Adam's plan for leaving Calais. He spotted the transport boat long after Adam had and finally made the connection. Which was more than fine. Trey liked boats just like he liked water.

As they waited for the boat to dock, Trey glanced sideways at Adam. He took a minute to respond. "Play? Yes. The shamisen, a little koto, and guitar. Why?" He didn't have much to say on the subject, though even the thought of the music he learned in the past made him sad. Even with eternity, he never found time yet to get proficient at anything except perhaps the shamisen, having spent the better part of his life in Japan.

The boat reached the docks and the men threw out their mooring lines, all scrabbling about like little black shadows in the night. Trey turned fully, now eyeing Adam intensely. He really didn't get this man who seemed to want him along and not at the same time. Trey almost didn't notice, being so wrapped up in himself as he often was. But this was a strange situation so he paid extra attention even if it just continued to baffle him. He shook his head, turning his attention back to the boat. "Will they let us on that?"

Adam nodded at Trey's response, it should be too hard to find a guitar in Paris, though they'd probably need to find an international or Oriental shop to find the shamisen and koto. Adam liked the idea of having something of a friend to play music with. He looked at Trey for a moment, not saying anything. He wasn't too great with words, he'd hoped that Trey could understand that, as this would probably mean they'd both be rather quiet most of the time.

When the transport boat docked, Adam looked at Trey, "Wait here." He caught the attention of the boat's captain and met the man on the dock. Adam always carried with him a large roll of currency, always cash, always updated for whatever country he was in. He found that the way to get what you wanted in life was through a person's wallet. His would always be full. After all, he'd spent decades saving up for possible emergencies. He supposed his amount of money grew rather large, though he made sure never to spend too much of it. Adam exchanged some words with the captain and then slipped a decent amount of bills into the man's hands.

After the exchange, Adam went back to Trey and motioned with his head for Trey to follow him on board of the boat. "It's not an incredibly long way to Paris. We'll arrive just before sunrise." Adam didn't realize that he wasn't really considering Trey's feelings much. Adam wasn't heartless, though, he was just not very good win other people or communication. "You seem uneasy." Another obvious statement which was meant to be Adam's way of saying, How are you doing? What are your thoughts?

Adam knew he'd have to be better with his bedside manner if he wanted Trey as a friend. For now, he'd only considered Trey as a lonely vampire he was helping out. His current plan was to take Trey to Paris, buy the man some clothes, help him get some food, give the man some money and send him in his way... Though, it would be nice to have a stronger relationship of someone his own kind.
