Anthony Kiedis, the lead singer, was great friends with Hillel Slovak (former guitarist) since high school. Then Hillel accidentally OD'd on drugs and died. It seriously tore Anthony up. Reading his auto biography when he's talking about it is just... so sad. And then the song is about Hillel.
