Un tout petit faut: "J'ai peur" pas "Je suis peur". L'expression est "avoir peur de quelque chose." ^^;

@Fox Awww, c'est la meme situation pour moi aussi, mais parce que l'Hexagone est en travers de la Manche, tout pres d'ici, j'amerais le visiter tot. L'annee prochaine, peut etre..? >< Mais c'est cher... hmph.

@zig Oui, c'est un dilemme, certainement. L'orale est tres difficile =o= Il y a un mois j'ai fait mon orale de rattrapage... j'espere que j'ai succede ;3; Je ne saurai pas jusqu'a la fin d'ete.

What novels have you read? Anything interesting?

Plus récemment, Lettres d'une Péruvienne de Françoise de Graffigny. C'est un roman épistolaire de dix-huitième siècle, lequel utilise l'histoire d'une Péruvienne captive en France pour critiquer le gouvernement et la société.
On l'a été donné à lire dans une classe (mais pas une classe de français). Ce n'était guère mon genre de roman préféré, mais c'était intéressant.

Je suis en train de lire Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, mais je fais des progrès assez lentement.

Pas de romans modernes, malheureusement... ils sont beaucoup plus difficile à trouver.

Most recently, Françoise de Graffigny's Lettres d'une Péruvienne. It's an eighteenth-century novel, which criticizes French government and society through letters written by a Peruvian woman kidnapped and brought to France. It was assigned for a class (but not a French class). Hardly the sort of thing I would have read under other circumstances, but it was interesting.

I'm in the middle of reading The Count of Monte Cristo, but it's going rather slowly.

Nothing modern, unfortunately... modern French novels are much harder to find.

J'ai lu L'Etranger de Camus pour mon A level. En fait, au jeudi cette semaine je prendrai mon examen final, qui demande une composition de ~400(?) mots au sujet du livre.

Haha, cette thread m'aide de reviser pour l'examen. =w=

I would love to visit Paris, especially since I've been reading about its patisseries all week. The only reason to regret not majoring in literature...

@Zig Oui, c'est bon, mais ce n'est pas facile de lire. C'est... triste. Boulversant. Et, de temps en temps, un peu degoutant. Meursault n'est pas un personnage humain, a mon avis... au contraire, il est l'absurde incarné.

Mon A level en francais est finit aujourd'hui =w= Je pense que l'examen a passé bien. Mais ce n'est pas certain jusqu'a je recevrai mes resultates en aout D8

My French is really (tres) rusty, but I know enough (mais je connais assez de vocabulaire) vocabulary to mess with my 6 year old nephew and his dad's uncle-in-law (avec mon 6 ans ____ et ton oncle de ton pere).

I hope my French+English=Frenchlish is acceptable.

And (et)...is Sacre bleu a swear word (mot) because my French teacher would use it all the time (parce que mon professeur utilize le mot beaucoup)?

How long ago did you study French? French grammar can be a bit fiendishly strange, for sure... even after studying some other Romance languages, I found its grammar less intuitive than Arabic's.

Zig probably has a better sense of its usage, but I think that "Sacrebleu!" is pretty much the French equivalent to "Zounds!" or "Egad!"

lol, I totally missed your english translation. I was sort of close....

I learned French 8-9 years ago. I can't believe it's been that long!
I was never any good at it though. Verbs, Argeement, etc.
Technically, I should be able to understand and communicate perfectly like everyone else even with those few years. I was taught everything from past perfect, to imperatif and all that other good stuff. I was kind of a slacker and really fell behind. I struggled in French like I did in math...

My husband was really good at German, but he lost all of it! D8

Well, I only took a semester of German and I was really really bad with the verbs.

I like to think that what I remember was all thanks to my enthusiasm as a kid in middle school...when I took an introduction to foreign language class where we learned a little bit of french, german and spanish. My class actually went in that order...and I remembered French the most, german second, and barely remember any spanish.

I never picked up much vocabulary, but just two years ago I had a pretty solid grounding in Arabic grammar and now it's almost completely gone. ;_; If I'd only had a few years of French, I'm sure that would be gone as well. So I'm really impressed that you remember any French after eight or nine years!

Heh. It seems strange to have your language preferences decided so early, but come to think of it, that "exploring languages" class had a big impact on me as well. I also enjoyed it, and continued with the first language we learned! In my case, it was Spanish... After six years of instruction, I was still told that I spoke French with a Spanish accent. ._.

What's the German system of conjugating verbs like? Is there a lot of irregularity?

All I know in Arabic is Ahlan wa Sahlen. ;D

I took French in high school. I think I took it for fun. That and it filled some sort of requirement.

I'm not sure about the German verb conjugation. I can't remember a darn thing. I'd say it's similar to French and there is some irregularity?

On a side note,
I'm cranky and in no mood for our cat's early morning antics.

German verbs are interesting. (I'm just going to write this part in English because it'll be much easier...) There are weak verbs and strong verbs. The weak ones are regular while the strong ones are completely irregular in every tense. The usual German endings are -en in the infinitive. I'll give you a complete present tense conjugation of the regular verb spielen (to play) for example:

ich spiele = I play
du spielst = you play
er spielt = he plays
sie spielt = she plays
es spielt = it plays
wir spielen = we play
ihr spielt = you (plural) play
sie spielen = they play
Sie spielen = you (formal) play

The bolded parts are the regular endings you add to the stem which is usually everything but the -en (so speil- in this case). I can go a bit deeper into the different cases or an example of a strong verb if you're interested in that too I just don't want to go crazy overboard, I'm not sure how much you want to know. ^^;
