I think there have been predictions of the world ending for a long time but now we have the internet and TV to spread the message more easily.

I think because of the debarcle earlier this year with the predicted rapture, any end-of-the-world doom and gloom is gonna be greeted with derision from pretty much the entire world. Other than tinfoil hat-wearing nutjobs, and the super-intense religious fundamentalists.
