I miss nail polish, myself... but then again, I can't stand the obnoxious chemical smell anymore.

I have two nice nail polishes that are kinda like the China Glaze, that's 13$ that nail salons use but I'm afraid they'll just rot.

As for the nail polish chipping off, you could try a base coat and a top coat. Have you tried other brands of polish? It might just be the brand of polish you were using...

I try a bunch of different brands to be honest - I see a color I really like and grab it - I don't really care about the brand XD

I don't know if I'd wear it now anyway - as a teacher who already looks like she is 12...I don't need to add nail polish on top of it XD I feel like it makes me look younger!

You could wear some nice neutral shades...

I have a color like this which is really nice. It's not meant to match your skin tone but it's subtle and the glitter still makes it fun:
