I like using pencil a whole lot better than pen. I've tried ink too, and it gets way too messy.

I usually sketch in pencil and then go over it in pen. But I do draw with pen sometimes if I have no pencil available.

Pencil all the way. I never use pens. Mostly because it goes from sketch to tablet. No pen required!

I do both. I can sketch with a pen and not be afraid, because I can just scan it later and clean it all up.

Pencils can be messy, but there's a lot you can do with them that you can't do as well with pens, like smudging for shading, erasing to make highlights, and stuff like that.

Each one has its own good things about it, you just have to know what you want to do, and then pick the right one for the job.

I start with a pencil then outline in inked pen.

I don't like to start with pen until I am just doing a quick doodle. I will draw with anything I can find then! XD

I usually use pencil in my drawings, but only because I do not have much experience with using pen. I like being able to erase or smudge away my errors. Pens, for me, make lines and outlines that are too...how to describe it...hard?

I use pencil only when im doodling important things like character development, outside of that I try to only use pen to challenge myself. No eraser? No problem. Pen teaches you how to better the mistakes that you could of just erased if using pencil.
In the situation of inking though, I use pencil for sketch and primary picture then go over with ink and kneaded eraser for final. Since I am mostly digital I tend to skip the inking process and go straight to scanning and finishing digitally.

pencil requires too much effort lmao also ... pen helps you learn precision? i guess?
when i'm doing a -real- piece i use pencil to sketch first and pen to layer though
