Newt eyed them both for a few long moments. "You look kind of like someone I used to know," he mused, though that clearly wasn't what he'd asked them to stay for.

"Excuse me...?" Cat replied uncertainly. "Are you sure? We're from the States. Mostly non-magical family, except for one of our grandmothers, and my mother."

"Hmm." Newt shook himself. "Yes, well, perhaps we'll figure it out later. Which one of you has been encouraging the niffler?" From seemingly out of nowhere, Newt pulled the niffler, which was wriggling.

"Me." Olivia looked a little embarrassed. But only a little.

Cat snickered and nudged Olivia. Busted~

"You need to keep a better eye on your bandit," she teased her cousin.

"Well I can't keep him in the castle with me," Olivia pointed out reasonably, taking the niffler from Newt and letting it sniff her all over.

"No, you certainly can't," Newt agreed with a bit of a grin. "You've done a good job, though, he's easy to handle. For a niffler."

Cat just snickered a bit.

"You know, we were going to stay with Grandma Q and Grandpa Jake for the holidays, I bet we can take it with us for that," she pointed out to Olivia. "Not a whole lot of trouble it can get into in a bakery, not enough shiny things."

"Bakery?" Newt's attention focused on Cat again. "Grandpa Jake?" It was a long shot, even for his run of luck, but they looked too similar for it to be a coincidence.

Cat blinked and nodded.

"Yeah," she said. "Our grandparents that live in the States have a bakery, our grandfather owns it. Why?"

"I met a man, once," Newt said slowly. "He lived in the United States. Made some of the best pastries I'd ever had. It took a few years, but he eventually married a witch."

Cat blinked, but was still a bit skeptical.

"Where in the States?" she asked. "Because that could be a lot of people."

"New York." Newt was looking between them, comparing all the similarities to Queenie that he could find in them.

"Cat." Olivia's eyes were wide as she put two and two together and got five. "Cat, Great Uncle Newt."

"Wait." Cat held up her hands. "Wait. Newt Scamander is our Great Uncle Newt? The one who sends sporadic letters to Grandma Q and Grandpa Jake and the occasional weird feather?" She made a face. "Oh my god, Grandma Queen, why didn't you tell us?"

Newt smiled. "Sounds like Queenie," he agreed. "She likes her little mysteries." He'd known of course that they'd had kids, and grandkids. Queenie bragged about them whenever possible. But he hadn't expected to run into them here.

Cat scrubbed her face with her hands for a moment.

"Okay," she said. "You're our great uncle. That actually explains some things about Grandma Q and Grandpa Jake." She paused for a moment, and then looked at him. "Hey, how do you think they'll react when we visit for the holidays and I show them that I became an animagus?"

Newt blinked. "Well. Queenie will pout that you didn't tell her earlier, but be proud." He paused for a moment. "Jacob... will probably take it as well as a Muggle married to a witch can." He shrugged.

"He'll be fascinated, okay," Cat said. "This will be the first holiday I'll be allowed to change off school grounds, so it'll be interesting."

Newt smiled a little at that. And then he remembered the other reason he'd had Cat stay.

"I know you saw my case, earlier," he said, quite conversationally. "Don't go poking about in there."

"How did you get such complex spellwork to stick to leather like that?" Cat asked eagerly. "And what all is in it? I saw you bring the gryphon out, but what else?"

"Lots," Newt told her. "Much more than you should know about. It took years to make, a lot of trial and error." He paused for a moment. "And you'll not be telling anyone else of it."

"But it's so fascinating," Cat said. "I mean, I'm not super great at charms all the time, but still, it's amazing."

"Even so, don't go telling people about it. I can show you a few things, if you're that interested." Newt shrugged in a self-deprecating way.

Cat was about to reply when the signal for next class period sounded.

"And that is my cue to head to the dungeons for potions, so I have to go," she said, grabbing her bag. "We should talk more later though."

Newt nodded and waved them off, watching them leave.

Olivia reluctantly left her niffler behind and headed back up to the castle, looking thoughtful.

It wasn't too long after that that Sirius caught up to Olivia after class.

"Hey, wait up," he said.

Olivia paused to let him catch up. "What's up, Black? Finally decided to take me up on those DADA lessons?" she teased gently.
