Sonali stood up and wiped the sweat from her brow. It was so hot this season... She lifted a bundle of clothing, resting it on one hip with both hands on it, and limped towards her family's hut. Her mother was scolding her tyke younger brother, while her father was nowhere in sight. She supposed he was out chasing the livestock again, who attempted get-aways frequently. The oldest of two, Sonali was just an impoverished, simple Hindu girl with dark skin and hair tied in pigtails. She was no older than eighteen years old, spending most of her time working in the fields or washing. Her family had to strive to make enough money to get supplies from the merchants at the center of the village. But despite hardships, her parents and brother remained fairly cheerful and upbeat.
Sonali ate some panera bread and rice before going back outside. Since she'd finished her chores, the girl climbed up a small tree and stayed there, daydreaming. She often longed to be wealthy enough to go into the capital, or to get an education. But her outlook for either of those things? Not so good. The sound of the wind whispering through the leaves lulled her into a light sleep.
