Anyone here actually play Disgaea or another Nippon Ichi game? It used to be that I could never find anyone that had even heard of Disgaea, but lately I've found more that have actually played it. It's a fun strategy RPG, for those who don't know what it is. Your main character is the prince of the netherworld, Laharl(Raharu) but after his father died, he's had to fight to reestablish himself and become overlord of the Netherworld. It has comedy in it, which I think it just adorable.

Unlike most games, you can actually get your character to lvl 9,999. >w< Is that just spiffy or what? You can even pick the character's class and even transmigrate(reincarnate) the character to a lvl one, only to have higher base stats. We all know what higher base stats mean, don't we? <3

The game has lots of things to talk about and there's a lot to do. I have over 100 hours, but even though I've beaten the game lots of times(multiple endings) there's still a LOT for me to do, given that one can level not only their weapons, but their weapon's stats.

Level a weapon's stats? O.o Sounds weird, doesn't it? xD Yeah, there are people who live in the weapons and other items, and certain ones give your items certain properties. Some give poison attribute and others add stats, for example. By going into the item via item world, you can tame these "specialists" by killing them and fuse like ones together, increasing their level. After their tamed, you can even move them to whatever item you'd like. :3

I could go on and on about Disgaea. xD

Nippon Ichi games I've played:
Disgaea
Disgaea 2
Atelier Iris
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Makai Kingdom
Rhapsody(I think that's one)

All of the above are for PS2 except for the last (PS1)

Any you've played? Like them?

  • I've got a handful of the NIS games, and sadly, have only played through about half the game for all of them, before either getting stuck/frustrated or just forgetting to finish it because of school getting in the way. Though, I only tend to bust out my RPGs when I have a whole day to myself and would be bored out of my mind otherwise. xD;

Ah, yes. I knew I was leaving one off of my list. Phantom brave! It was cute, but a disappointment after playing Disgaea. D: I didn't like the battle system. Makai kingdom is like a mix between the two.

Yeah, I beat Phantom Brave, but similarly I didn't get much farther. My ex(boyfriend at the time) completely beat it, though.

I play a lot of games at once two.

I'm currently working on:
Dis. 2
Tales of the Abyss
FF 12
Demon Kings
Shin Megami Tensei
And some others.

And yeah, gaia has certain items that reminds me of Disgaea. xD The Chyaku Norisu scarf, the curly hair(lolita?), and some other things. I made a mage(f) avatar for a videogame avi contest on gaia once. :3

As for Atelier Iris, my ex bought it, so I didn't have to look for it. I had to order Shin Megami Tensei, though. Rhapsody was also hard to find. D: They sell Atelier Iris 2 at the game store, along with Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga, and others. :3 I found Phantom Brave on accident.

Aah, I had Phantom Brave for a while, but I didn't have the time to fully delve into it, so I sold it back D: (I bought it used for the cute art factor hahaha). I do want to start playing Disgaea and Atelier Iris has always been on my eye *3*

I started off with Disgaea before Phantom Brave, and don't regret it. Why would it be better to start with Phantom Brave?

I don't really care for the Disgaea anime. It's not as cute as the game and the animation isn't as good. D: It's disappointing, especially after seeing the intro to Disgaea 2 and seeing how beautiful that animation is. Also, Mid Boss looks funny and goes by The Baron of Beauty instead of the Dark Adonis(from what I've seen). </3

I hate to admit it but I havn't gotten to play one of these yet; I'm currently trying to get Disgaea:Hour of Darkness.

I've watched some of the anime and the more I've looked up about the game itself the more I adore everything about it; the halloween like elements of it, the bizzare humor, the wonderful characters... I must say, by far, though, I really adore Laharl; he's my favorite character from much of anything at the moment. I like him more than I do Etna, Flonne, or any of the others; I used to like Etna more before I started looking into the other characters... Then I found Laharl.

I've played Atelier Iris 1 and 2. xD Actually, I just traded them in today towards the purchase of my Xbox 360.

The first one is excellent, but it's a 50/50 shot at whether or not your game is fatally glitched and your gameplay dies at some point. There was only a limited release of the game there's no waiting for a non-glitched version. My game would die when I reached the final boss so I never actually beat the game--and there's still stuff to do after you beat the final boss. You can't finish the subquests until after. Also, my version kept glitching and synth items would disappear from my inventory. D:

The second one looked a lot nicer, had much better world graphics, sort of had a nice premise, but was WAY too easy. I was really, really bored with it.

The downfall with both games was the storyline was way too linear. There was no guesswork involved, no puzzles to figure out. Even in the first one where the synth subquest could be finished after beating the final boss... Just blah.

Atelier Iris was cute, but never really caught my attention too much. I mainly just played it because my ex told me if was spiffy. He loved it. I didn't like what I saw of the story either; that's probably why I stopped playing it. I was mainly interested in the recipes and such. xD

I don't remember any glitches from what I saw of it, though. I probably didn't play it enough to get to any. xD

An another note: [About DISGAEA]
Did anyone ever do that thing where you click behind the throne, the corner of the room, and the skull at the shops in order to unlock Etna's little hideout thing? If you haven't you should. You get a testament at the end of the game that way.~

I'm a huge fan of these games. :3

Played Disgaea 1&2 as well as Phantom Brave. I have La Pucelle lying around somewhere too. I ought to play it again. ;_;

I have to agree that Phantom Brave was a disappointment. The battle system was frustrating in the beginning since my style of play in Disgaea was frequently to have one person clear out a whole map, so the limited turns was annoying. On the flip side, once I learned of the failure dungeon trick, I was able to breeze through the game far too easily.

I haven't played La Pucelle enough to really judge it too much, though the system of gaining new monsters was a bit frustrating as I recall.

Really, I found the Disgaea 1 system to be extremely well done and thus it's no surprise that Disgaea 2 improved on the system. Still, I'm probably most comfortable playing 1 since I've spent so many hours at it already. The most frustrating thing about Disgaea 2 for me is that frequently the challenge is simply the map layout itself. They definitely got much more creative with their mapping in 2, though that doesn't mean I have to enjoy maps with long single file paths. :gonk:

The only one that I've had a chance to play was Rhapsody, but it's a really cute stylization~ I have La Pucelle which is in the same style was Rhapsody and hopefully I'll be able to pick up some version of Disgea and Phantom Brave :3 I love the artists that Nippon Ichi gets and theyir games are cute and fun ^^

D: I think one of the little kids that come in and out of the house I live in stole my Disgaea disk. u_u All of us have looked everywhere, but can't find it. I have the case and the little booklet thing, but the disk is gone. I'm the kind of person who keeps his things together, so yeah... D:

Going to nitpick for a second. Atelier Iris/2/3 and Ar Tonelico aren't made by NIS they're made by Gust and Gust/Branpresto for Ar Tonelico and published by NISA.

Any how I'm a NIS/Gust/NISA fan boy and I own and have beaten all of the games they have released in the US except for one which is Rhapsody.

Never owned Disgaea, but it sounds freakin' hilarious xD I've loved Nippon Ichi ever since I stumbled across that quote from Atelier Iris:

"You can't sleep in the same bed as me! The ESRB would go crazy!"

I play Disgaea! I love it! It's so cool! Although it's slightly challenging as far as leveling is concerned with some of the characters. but you gotta love it! my favorite character was always the mage class Galaxy Mage. can't play the game without them. as far as story characters...it would have to Etna or whatever her name was. i thinkt hat's it...hmm...or Flonne.

I ADORE their strategy RPGs *_*!!! Though Disgaea is still the funniest and best of the bunch XD XD

I was a bit disappointed with Disgaea 2...it was less funny / mocking of the genres and itself. It seemed to take itself too seriously in a lot of places T_T. Ah well, the battle system was still awesome XD XD
