It is highly addictive. I had to stop myself from getting sucked into it.

i do my carding and spinning on my bed or couch?
i only have hand carders and drop spindles, no complex machinery for me. (though i wouldn't mind an electric carder and treadle spindles.
and i get the fiber online or at hill country weavers on south congress or the knitting nest on slaughter.
granny, i would recommend starting with a drop spindle and pre-processed roving (instead of batts or rolags) just because drop spindles are much cheaper than treadle spindles (which is what people usually think of when spindles are mentioned.)

That's how my mom started. Faire this year started already. I know that in the past, she would walk with a drop spindle all over the place. Not sure if she does it now. The nice thing about the drop spindles is that they are inexpensive - so if you find that you aren't interested in spinning as much as you thought up front, you don't waste a ton of money on equipment.

Oh, I remember that my mother had a tread spindle (from her mother). I wonder what ever happened to that?

I suspect that by now it would be very rickety. I probably wouldn't be able to use it.
After my visit with my sister, I'm going to go check out those shops you mentioned, leenie! I think I would like spinning my own yarn. Then I can knit socks with it and give those away as presents.

you will definitely want to practice quite a bit, though, before you get to spinning sock yarn.
it has to be fairly thin and even, usually, and most people don't start spinning like that right away.
you should definitely try knitting things like scarves and hats with your first attempts at handspinning since they'll probably be fairly lumpy and twisty. :]

Oh my, Dream and Guivre. We didn't mean to exclude you from the conversation.
I mentioned spinning to my husband, and he said "Why?"
I don't think he understands hobbies.
He does do a lot of cooking. I should have responded, "why do you bake your own bread, when you could buy it instead?"

dream, i was wearing that shirt yesterday. XD
strawberry is best!
just letting you know from experience, granny.
my yarn is still a little lumpy, but not as much as it was when i started.
part of that is using the drop spindle which is a bit less consistent than a treadle spindle. @_@;;
sorry for excluding you guys?
you can always change the subject. :3

I keep thinking that one day, I'll be able to spin and do other handwork. But, with a busy little baby running around... I don't know how people did all that back then.

The red ones are my favorites. They freeze very nicely.
Everytime they go on sale, I buy quite a few bunches so I can freeze them.

I love fresh fruit. Unfortunately, my husband doesn't eat it, so I have to be careful how much I buy. I don't like it to spoil.

Strawberries are my favorite fruit - but I'm extremely allergic to them. All I can do is look, smell and drool. We have some growing wild in the yard.

I love to cut up fresh strawberries, sugar them, and then after they've juiced up I put them on ice cream. So good!
