"Dead Things" by Emiliana Torrini

There's also that "I do cherish you" or whatever it's called by 98 degrees. It was playing on the radio when I came home to find my gerbil dying.

This one's really silly, but the "stick with you" by the pussycat dolls... If they had released it a month earlier/later it wouldn't bother me that much, bad timing I guess.

*edit*
Two others I forgot.

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division, and "True Faith" by New Order. I guess because both of them capture exactly what my life is all about.

The Lighthouse's Tale by Nickel Creek is a very sad song for me. The Stubborn One by Trace Adkins can also bring tears to my eyes. It hits too close to home.

I have a couple of favorite sad songs. Hallelujah is probably my most favorite. I like the Jeff Buckley and Brandi Carlile versions the best. I think they have the most emotion. Other than that Konstantine by Something Corporate is a good one and so is King of Bloke and Bird by Robbie Williams.

I'd have to say that 'Me and A Gun' by Tori Amos is the saddest, most powerfully depressing song that I have ever heard.

And I mean that in the best way possible of course.

Still Alone.

It's a foreign song from japan. I say that's my favorite sad song ever. "Still Alone" by Ayumi Hamasaki.

I suppose Within Temptation's "Pale", "Memories", and "Swan Song" are sad songs I adore as well... Huh... what else is there...

I dont know, but I have alot of sad songs on my Zune.

It's a toss up with me. I have two...I think. The first would be Brian Eno's 'Dead Finks Don't Talk'. It starts off really sad and somber, and you can tell by the guy's voice that he's british. Lyrics don't make much sense, but there's a really sad, hopeless vibe to it, you can just feel it. But there are some parts of it that just make it sound goofy.

The second would be 'Pocketful of Stars' by Nine Black Alps. It's got a slow, soft guitar melody and the guy's voice sounds really tranquil. The lyrics are really good too. The first verse and chorus goes...

Quote:
I don't know who you are
And I don't know where you've been
Always out on your own
Always down on your knees
Now you know,

I need a miricle
A starcrossed lover
An arrow in my heart

I need a rainy day
In an endless summer
A pocketful of stars
I first heard that one while watching the penguin animation 'Surfs Up'. It's a really sweet song.

But then there's 'Atlantic' by Thrice. This one sounds really sad and hopeless as well. Heh, okay so there are more than two that I like.

I think the most ultimately sad and depressing song I've ever heard has got to be 'Mad World' by Gary Jules. Most people know this song from watching Donnie Darko. The song itself used to make me really want to off myself. It's just so incredibly sad...

Quote:
All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head, I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very very
Mad world...

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, happy birthday
Then they feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher, tell me, what's my lesson?
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very very
Mad world...
The second verse is probably the sadest because at that point you hear kind of soft violins in the background which just make the overall tone of the song a thousand times more depressing.

My favorite song, and I mean my absolute FAVORITE...is, in my opinion, the saddest song ever written. It's incredible - it's amazingly relaxing to listen to, but when it stops...the lyrics are just haunting.

...that is, if you understand it. It's actually in Japanese...so yeah. ^^; But then again...even before I had any idea what it meant, I thought it was really disturbing for some reason when I wasn't actually listening to it.

The song is Rain, by Gackt. It has been my favorite song since I first heard it two years ago and didn't understand more than (literally) two words of it. I could just feel the power it had for some reason. Here are the lyrics, and my translation - I apologize, this is going to be long...LOTS of notes...^^;

1 - This was one of the hardest lines in the song to translate. "warau" usually means to laugh, or to smile. However, in this case, a rare kanji (å—¤ã†) was used to imply mocking. "iki o hisomete warau" would ordinarily mean to laugh airily, but because of this, I decided to translate it as a soft mocking laugh.
2 - "keshiteageyou" (消ã—ã¦ã‚ã’よã†) doesn't translate well into English. We just don't have words like that. The verb "kesu" means simply to erase, but by adding the suffix "-ageyou" to the te-form (keshite), it adds an implication of a selfless act specifically for the good of a given person...even though it's not what the speaker wants to do, or it may possibly even be something that will harm him.
3 - While the sung word is "hari" (é‡), which usually means needle, the written word is "tokei" (時計), meaning clock. This points more toward the other meaning of "hari," which is the hand of a clock, so I decided to translate it as such. However, for your own interpretation purposes, I might point out that "hari" can also mean a fish hook, and has a strong implication of something being sharp.
4 - The sung word here is "toki" (時), meaning time, but the written word is "shunkan" (瞬間), meaning instant. The way I see it, this implies that the time lost isn't weeks, hours, or even a matter of minutes, but just a split second...obviously a very important split second.
5 - The sung word is "kinou" (昨日), meaning yesterday, but the written word here is "kako" (éŽåŽ»), meaning past. To me, this implies that it's a reference not to the actual day before today, but the more figurative past as a whole.
6 - This was another hard one to translate - literally, the word "seme," in this context, would mean a barrage or an attack, but basically it seems to be the one happy point in the song, with the speaker expressing gratefulness that no one can harm or try to harm the subject anymore, hence my translation.
7 - Yeah, I know, the translation doesn't seem to make much sense. But that's just because this particular switch is hard to translate like this. The sung word is "sora" (空), meaning sky, but the written word is "uchuu" (宇宙), meaning universe. So it really implies a "deeper" part of the sky, past that blue thing with clouds that you see when you look up during the day.
If you're not crying yet, I advise you to watch this live performance of the song - it really gives you the full impact of it in a way that not much short of FEELING the emotions described in the song can. And...well, I'll just leave you with my translation so you can see which way would be better.
