This thread is a combination of zombies (the theme of my hangout), a giveaway, and a celebration of the English tradition of Bonfire Night. (Every 5th November)

Bonfire Night is explained here, in comic form, from my memory.
Enjoy, and then chat.

It really is, I prefer it to Halloween. It feels more special.

@ Seridano - wotcha studying? I've written 2 essays. My third one is:
"Carson posed a threat....beacuse she was a woman...outside the...application of conventional scientific knowledge". What role does gender play in the critical reception of Rachel Carson's text?"

That text would be Silent Spring, a very dry environmental book from 1962... *shudder*

I'm an English major, so I'm always swamped with papers to be written.

The one I'll be starting tomorrow is a comparison of the different views/types of love in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Romeo and Juliet, and what they seem to suggest about....oh hell I still dunno how to frame the accursed thesis in a way that makes it sound reasonably intelligent. >.<;

Ahaha Pearl, I love your little comic explanation of Bonfire night. Especially the last part.
Anyone going to any bonfires this weekend? Or know of any good ones in London? I went to one last year and it was shit, had to pay lots of £ to get in and you couldn't get close to the bonfires at all. There was a mediocre fireworks display we could've watched from the gates and an expensive fairground. So not worth it.

Thanks, Ljos xD

I dunno about London, but there's one on Saturday which I went to last year. The entry is a bit steep (£6) but there's a bonfire you can get reasonably near to, and the fireworks were pretty awesome. There are extortionate fairground stalls and a couple of rides, but you don't have to pay for those if you don't wanna.

Though the fireworks would have to be preeetty bad to make me unhappy. I love the atmos of bonfire night.

I still need to get a ticket... and one for the sci fi festival on sunday O:

Hi, Pearl! ^^
I haven't seen you around for a long time.
I'm debating going to a firework display near my uni. The weather's supposed to be awful, though, so maybe I'll just watch from my window. xD

We hold our own firework displays... Just go down to the shop and buy some then you're all good.

"We watch fireworks and light bonfires just because" I loved this last pannel xD

I had heard about Bonfire Night, but I didn't really know what it was about :)' (or maybe I learned about it at some point of on my hectic last year of school and then ended up forgeting it). Anyway, it was a pretty elightening little comic. Thanks! *thumbs up*

@ Spring - the weather doesn't look too bad in the forecast, but our display is on Saturday so maybe it's different for you.
There's a display right next to my uni, but I'm off campus this year so I'll have to get a bus there. >.>

@ Dreamer - I'm glad my comic helped!

Pearl, whereabouts are you again? It's apparently going to be really rainy in London both Friday and Saturday night. :C

Fireworks are awwwwesome.. maybe we should get the managers of the pub downstairs to buy some, or allow us to shoot some from the garden.. or the roof.. :D Provided it won't be pouring down, that is.

I'm in ... east anglia. 8D

Saturday looks alright. I hope you get your fireworks!

We're about to go see this shopping centre putting its christmas lights up. Probably won't be that exciting - not exactly Oxford Street lol - but we're eating out afterwards.

Ahh right. Well, it's raining today, but the weather forecast has changed to saying we might get some sun tomorrow with light clouds so hopefully no rain in the evening. The pub downstairs is having a little party tomorrow night I think, instead of tonight, so hopefully that will be good.

Anyone cool coming to turn them on? I remember when I was living in Kingston, my first year there they had Cybermen come and turn on the lights! I was so excited.. xD And last year they had Darth Vader and a few Storm Troopers.. I don't get how that has anything to do with Christmas, or why they're so obsessed with sci-fi baddies, but I'm not complaining! :D

Oh, we just had Bob the Builder xD

But those aren't the main lights, the city lights get turned on on the 18th. Should be fun.

It feels so strange not having imminent work to do....

I guess this giveaway looks unlikely, unless I get a rush of people today. o3o

Yay, Bonfire night. Autumnal fireworks seem more to my liking than summer ones. But I prefer autumn anything over the other alternatives.

Hey, I'm gonna have to leave, a friend wants to chat so I'm going downstairs to eat fudge.

Thanks for turning up :]

For me, fireworks are all about coats and scarves and frosty breath.

Pearl, I love your comic about bonfire night! It's so funny. I live in England, and I can hear some fireworks going off right now. There were loads outside around 9 'o clock. I lit some sparklers in my back garden too. Happy Bonfire Night everyone!
