How does buying/selling art work?

I am slightly confused.
So when you are buying art, do you pay up front and wait until your commission is done?
or do you pay half and pay the other half when your commission is done?
Any help will be greatly appreciated :)

You can ask the person, but most of the time it's you pay after. ^^

I usually require to send me the trade ine the beginning, and after I am done with art, I confirm it.
