c0th - Guns, Germs & Steel is amazing. I read it a few years ago when it first came out, and I was just so impressed at the time that it got me reading a whole list of other non-fiction books on the same subject. The only problem I really had with his writing was how repetitive he got. But when you're done, tell me what you think of it!

secretdae007 - If you're having trouble getting through The Hobbit, maybe start reading the Silmarillion first. It's the history of Middle Earth, and it will probably get you more in-tune with the characters. It reads a little dry, but it's very addicting, and I think that it makes the other novels easier to get interested in.

The next book I plan to read is the sequel to "The Lies of Locke Lamora", by Scott Lynch.

It's not that The Hobbit doesn't make sense or anything... It's just drawn out and kind of drab for my tastes. It really has nothing to do with the characters or the world... Just the whole manner of JRR Tolkein's writing style in that book.

• @Alaunt&Kitkat, the mere thought that I could get paid to be surrounded by books all day kind of sealed the deal for me. That, and I've always considered my one real talent to be a flair for research xD
  Hard to apply to anything except a career involving books.
  I enjoy having endless trivial knowledge on a myriad amount of subjects, and helping others in that pursuit would be just plain peachy keen.

  I didn't find them dry at all.
  I make a point of reading The Hobbit, and the LOTR trilogy at least once a year, usually all in a row.
  The Hobbit will always be my favorite, but I considered the others grand as well.

I personally like all of Tolkein's descriptions - It's a writing style that isn't for everyone, but there's a kind of magic in it if you give it a chance. I just know that unless you're giving it your full attention, the Silmarillion can read a little bit like a textbook.

Still, I really suggest reading it first before you get into the Trilogy. Sometimes a bit of background is all you need to get interested in the storyline.

I've just been copying and pasting the same forum code I use for gaia, I hadn't even thought about it.

Guns, Germs, and Steel is very interesting so far. I think I'll enjoy it but it will be a while before I finish.

Afterwards I plan to read The Sovereign Individual by James Dale Davidson and William Rees-Mogg.

I expect it to be amazing :)

My cousin got me that book for Christmas, along with some other Camus books. I still need to read them, so I think I will begin sometime this coming weekend.

That's one of the few Camus novels I haven't read yet. I actually have it sitting on my shelf right now, but I've never had the time to get around to it.

I also want to read his essay "The Myth of Sisyphus," but I've never been able to find a copy. I'll probably break down someday and order it off the Internet.

I have around five of his novels. The Stranger, The Plague, The Fall, A Happy Death, and The First Man.

Well, I hear that The Hobbit is not quite the same as the other three. I did try reading Fellowship once but failed. I just haven't tried recently.

The Librarian: I just feel like it goes into too much detail... So much detail, that I get bored before anything interesting happens... As I put it to some of my friends, it's like "the book talks about every single leaf that the hobbit and his comrades pass"

Knerd: the details kill me with The Hobbit. There are just too many ordinary descriptions when I think of fantasy... Or maybe I'm just not fond of hobbits... I don't know...

Comments on The Stranger: I actually found the story to be interesting. Possibly because I could understand where Meursault was coming from with indifference. It was interesting how he took in the whole trail.

And for anyone who is interested, the t.v. show Seinfeld's last episode is somewhat based on the book.

I started it and got almost a chapter into it. Camus' style of writing is not what I am used to.

I'm having the hardest time finishing my current book...it doesn't capture my attention. But now I have to finish it, because you can't start a book and not read to the end...it's immoral.

I keep wanting it to be like the Mists of Avalon or the Forest House...but it's not.
