i think black and white are colors. But for selling art you have to say black and white or colored. so i like to say grey toned or colored.
Though i want to try a monotone some time. where i just use say... shades of blue. xD

(blue and purple are DEFINETLY different colors)

just different opinion. But, if they taught you the wrong skill, wrong observation, then yes, that is bad.
