Oh gosh... chapter by chapter would be awful. I don't think I could manage that.

Planning one book at a time works alright. I think it just limits the writer to a linear book series.
Plus I really like the idea of writing in a mystery for the reader to discover :D

Sometimes those mysteries just develop without planning though. It's usually not that hard to deal with building up the world when you need to, but then, I write romance novels. This isn't really something I need to do a lot of.

Romance novels, yeah those are usually pretty simple books, at least in my opinion. I tend to read a lot of adventure type books. It's usually important to have your goals set in something like that so that they don't get stuck.

Some mysteries do that's true. Even working on her story we are discovering mysteries just as we explore ideas

That's the joy of writing. The finding new things about your story. I like my romance novels to be complex from time to time, but unless it's a long series, I probably don't have to build things near as much as other writers. I stick to the real world a lot anyway so I end up researching that.

Sticking to the real world probably helps. I didn't use a real world so I had to write it out from scratch.

The only part that's been difficult though is plot holes. It's so easy to make a plot hole o.o

Yes plot holes are super easy to make! Ah but writing in the real world has it's own set of challenges and all the research depending on how in depth you go. In a made up realm you can just add a river if you want a river.

That's true for most people, but I'm way too picky to just "add a river"
I have to add the river, manupulate the surroundings to how they would react to a river, update the terrain map, update wildlife, add wildlife, create a river origin, make sure enough rain supplies the river, determine width and depth, figure out what cities would be built by it and where...

Well I could probably offer ideas and such Though I'm only able to detail her's so well because I know her so well.
What sort of gaps does your story have that you're trying to fill?

Currently working on the population. It's difficult to decide how large a military is without a population
I mean... a highly skilled fighter will make a larger impact vs 100 than 1000.

The biggest thing I do when I don't know what my gaps are is I mark the earliest moment the story can or will begin and the end of the story (currently). From then on, I mark all moments of interest. Something big. Like the introduction or death of a character, traveling, events, etc.
After I've marked all the way up to the end, I look back and check to see where in the timeline the story doesn't transition very well.

I'm also stuck on my plot and what I want this particular story to do. I just know my characters and the premise. It's detailed, has too many ways it can go down. I don't know what I want to focus on so it's been on hold for years. I wrote 50k of it for nanowrimo a while back, but I think the plot needs a refocus before I rewrite it.

I see. Probably what I would do is list every single possible ending, and from there, process of elimination until you have either a favorite, or a more realistic ending.
