That is true, there's a lot of 3 kingdoms based things out there. I've always been fascinated with ancient china and feudal japan.
Utawarerumono was a pretty decent anime. I mainly liked it because of the pet tiger.

And Rette, no doubt skill influences the overall outcome. But imagine both of those images you posted without the color from the program. They wouldn't look nearly as good as they do. Picture the second image without any shading and it would look tacky. The first one without coloring would look stiff and odd. The digital coloring just improves overall appearance. Of course better skill makes for better art, no doubt.
