1- Pretty please do NOT post in here if you do not have a pet in "Tales of the Middle Country" or are not one of my good friends (you know who you are.. if i have to TELL you, then its not you is it?).

2- Leave the drama at the door! why? because i told you so and this is my thread! no.. really, i would prefer people leave their emo-face at home so i dont have to deal with it. Do NOT make the Lingling angry!

3- Please PLEASE do not steal or borrow any of the images from this thread as they were made for me by lovely artists and friends. They would not appreciate some snarky little turd stealing their hard work *glares* i WILL find out if you do!

4- Abide by my few rules or feel my wrath!!! *snarls* I am completely serious about this.. this is essentially one of my "homes" do not mess it up with your icky writting/ unwanted company.

Brief Bio



Personality

Lingling is very bold and impetuous. Very forward with her speaking she is not afraid to tell you exactly whats on her mind (whether you really want to know or not). Though shes got a bit of a verbal bite she is very very gentle in nature and will not hurt anyone who she thinks is "pure" or deserving of her affections. Generally when she is angered she will grow to a larger stature, and when fatigued she will shrink to her "statuette" form. Lingling is very innocent and childish.

Background

In all the different mythologies around the world, the unicorn is a predominant reoccurring figure. The unicorn is called several different names depending on the country you hear the story from and usually its appearance varies widely depending on the location as well. Through all the different variations one thing always stays the same, the unicorn is the form of purity and harms no other living creature unless it is evil and threatens a pure persons life.

The Chinese variation of the unicorn, called the qilin is said to be made up of all the most noble beasts of the land. There are many different characteristics depending on which story you read, however, there are a few that reoccur in most. The qilin is said to have the horn of a stag (or multiple depending on the story), a body covered in scales, is made up of a myriad of colors (though yellow gold brown and red seem to be the main accepted colors), and generally sprout flame like appendages or decorations around their neck and hooves.

The qilin is said to revere all things alive and will not hurt anything that is pure. They are said to be able to walk on water, to not crush even the grass as they walk on land, and to eat no living creature. Common legend dictates that the qilins' appearance was usually only seen when a great ruler was about to be born, or was going to die. In some renditions the qilin can speak any and all of the languages of humans, and in some cases possessed telepathy as well. In further delving it is said that a qilin has the ability to tell if the truth is being told, making them to be a sort of protector of truth and virtue.

There are many different important tales that the qilin has a vast part in. One of the most well known is that the qilin is one of the four main spiritual creatures of Chinese myth (Ssu Ling) that are tied to the earths creation. Each of the mythical creatures of the Ssu Ling are linked to a direction on the compass; the qilin being west. It was said that the world began as a large egg, and that the first primordial man (P'an Ku) burst from the egg and spent the next 18000 years along with the 4 luck beasts creating the world as it is shaped today. When P'an Ku died, the four fortune beasts descended to the land and were dispersed all around the world. The qilin descended to the land to roam the forest and become the sacred protector of its domain.

The first recorded sighting of the qilin was during the sovereign of Fu Hsi (the first ruler of China). As legend tells it, the great ruler was sitting on the bank of the Yellow River near the end of his life. Contemplating on how to preserve his thoughts and way of dictating (written language had not yet been invented in China) he was interrupted when a qilin rose out of the water and walked to him. On its back was strapped magical signals which were used later in forming the first written Chinese language. Since that time the writing has evolved from what it was then to the characters the Chinese use to this day.

The qilin is still one of the most revered mythological beasts in China to this day. Though it has not been recorded as having been seen for several hundreds of years (many have justified this as because humankind has degenerated so much), the tales of its significance still impart the reverence our ancestors had for this gentle guardian of purity.

Artifact



The magical experience begins by obtaining an artifact from the shop. Some will look very old and outdated, while the others might look more modern. Whichever is the case, the artifacts are dormant at this stage. You have the choice to either seel it to an antique dealer or keep it...

Enchanced



For whatever reason you have kept the artifact with you, and one day you find that smokes are coming out of the artifact! No, no water...it's not on fire, don't worry. But at this point, surely you'd want to take this thing back to Kirin and return it because it creeps you out, right? No??

Sprite



So somehow you managed to not throw this haunted artifact away... Well what about now? Waking up today you find a little creature sitting next to/on top of/around/within your artifact! And WTF it talks! Although really...all it can say is Chinese...you might want a translater for it, or choose to throw the thing away.
Oh but wait! Why is this thing still here?? You were sure that you had buried it somewhere far away! Looks like this litte thing is stuck on you...Maybe it would be helpful to ask Kirin what to do.

Spirit

at this stage your little artifact creature has grown to the point that it is able to go around without carrying the artifact. Depending on your decision, if might speak a little English...but that's not for sure. Oh well, at least you have a companion in your life? You still can't touch them though....XD;

If you really are attached to your spirit, then perhaps you should consult Kirin to preform a mortalization on your artifact. Who knows what happens afterwards....

- Prompt -

Jade watched as Lingling ran around the room, her little hooves clicking on the solid wood floor as she skipped about between the ribbons she had pulled out just moments before. Amused, she watched as the little 3 foot spirit tripped over a thick red ribbon with bells attached to it and went sprawling into her box, to the protesting jingle of the bells. It had been months since she had first sent that box sitting in a run down little store in Menewsha.

Back then she had been looking for something to replace the jewelry box that her younger sister had destroyed. Shop after shop she had searched for something special to replace her favorite – now broken – music box that her great grandmother had given her. Nothing had appealed to her until she had stepped into that small dingy shop and seen the Qilin box displayed proudly on a dusty shelf. In awe she had picked it up, expecting it to be heavy and possibly filled with some small treasure from ages past. Only to see that inside was a soft piece of faded red silk with an indent that some cylindrical object had left in it.

Determined that the stories she had heard about the qilin would make this box special and keep it from breaking – surely the luck of the qilin would keep this beautiful little box safe? – she had bought it from the lady sitting behind the table and tucked it away in her bag wrapped in tissue paper to protect it from the jarring it would endure from her roller-skating home.

A sharp jangle of bells jolted her from her reverie and she looked up to see Lingling now completely covered in the ribbon, with the bells now tangled in her long hair. Sighing Jade stood and walked over to the silly – and oddly enough, not really lucky – guardian of the qilin and helped to free her from they soft tinkling restrains. “You know” she joked as she stared down at her small companion, “You’re not nearly as lucky as the 4th mythological luck beast you supposedly guard”. The small qilin-girl ignored her and them tied the ribbon that had tangled about her before, around her tail, waving it appreciatively to hear the soft tinkling that sounded like her name. *ling ling ling* Beaming a megawatt smile she looked up at Jade and raised her arms swinging her tail back and forth wildly, “Lingling!” she called out gleefully before taking off at a run to show her new toy to someone else.

- Home Sweet Home -

Jade rushed home, being careful to miss any of the bumps and cracks she saw in the road so as not to jar her precious new item as she hurried home to find the perfect place for it. Each moment she got closer her excitement bubbled all the more and by the time she had gotten home she burst through the door, threw off her skates and was running down the hall to show her room mate - who wasn't there at the moment.

Sighing in disappointment, she dropped her coat on her bed and rummaged through the bag until her tissue-clad treasure was in her hand. Smiling she swiftly unwrapped it and held it up in the light to admire the beautiful colors and the intricate design etched all around the base. "So pretty" she practically purred as she ran a long purple nail down it softly, "now, where to put you?".

Taking her eyes from her new toy she swiftly assessed the room and decided that she really wasn't sure where she wanted to put it. A soft push on her ankle caused her to look down and burst out laughing at the giant bow that obscured most of her kittens head. Placing the box on her comforter she swooped the kitten onto the bed and watched critically, "What do you think Lynx?" she asked curiously. The kitten marched purposefully over to the box and gave it a mighty swat from its tiny paw. Frowning Jade picked up the box and placed it on the highest shelf in her room, "well i guess that answers that" she muttered under her breath as she scooped the kitten into her arms and closed the door softly behind her.

- Lingling Halloween -

Jade sat on the edge of her bed slowly turning her head to examine each of the small trinkets she had picked up during her life time arranged haphazardly on the shelf. Sighing she stood and took a soft cloth and began polishing away all the small dust flurries that had settled on some of the older pieces, "I thought for sure some of these had a sort of energy coming from them" she mumbled to herself as she attacked a water spot on the side of one of the statuettes.

A loud rapping on her door startled Jade into dropping the cloth she was holding and she abruptly skipped over to the door and threw it open. A loud pop and several strings of orange and black confetti greeted her surprised face; "you early" she grinned as she pulled a string from her long hair and tilted a brow in question at her best friend. "I am" nodded her friend as she made herslf comfortable on the bed and threw a pillow at Jade, "I wasn't aware it was trinket cleaning day" she said with sarcasm sas she flicked the dusty cloth off the bed.

"Do you think it would be odd to carry that with me?" asked Jade changing subjects and pointing to a small oriental box with a kirin on it; "I want to see if the 'most magical time of the year' has any kind of effect on it, especially since its got the added bonus of being a full moon" she added by way of an explanation. "Sometimes i think your off your rocker" said her fraind rising slowly from the bed and tossing the remaining pillow at Jade, "But, if you want to carry that thing around all night, be my guest".

- A Mysterious Smoke -

Jade awoke from her nap with the most peculiar feeling that something was not right. Tossing her legs over the side of her bed she slipped her feet into her favorite pair of fluffy purple slippers and padded softly out of the room looking for her kitten. Trouble often happened around her pet and she worried that perhaps the feeling that was nagging at her was some wierd acute awareness to her cat.

Padding softly from room to room she would peek in calling softly and listening for any sounds of movement. Hearing none after wandering the entirey of the house she jogged back to her room in a panic only to see the kitten perchd on her highest shelf pawing at some yellow smoke that was billowing around the kirin box she had bought some time ago.

Gasping, Jade ran to the kitchen and quickly filled up a glass of water before scrambling back into her room and onto her desk. Pausing she held the glass poised above the box, her eyes widening in wonder. "Oh my" she said softly "this, is deffinetly something different". Tossing a glance at her desk clock she climbed slowly from the bed and stood staring up at the curling smoke, "I'm going to have to take you back to the shop and get some answers".
