Currently trying to reshade that leaf... compared it to the example leaf and it's a bit too dark.

Also dawned on me I was shading the complete wrong direction.

I'm drawn towards number 6. :O

Now that I zoomed in... and have a better look.
I am thinking that... you need one strong vein and few minor vein. As in dark shading for main vein and lighter shading for minor vein.
I like how random the minor vein spread out in number 6.
I like how the different depth shading of the main and minor vein in number 3.
As for the overall shape, the upper curve, make it curver. Erase that corner to make it rounder. THen it will be better.

Really? Alrighty then... #7 it seems is the wrong direction.
Do you think I should make it lighter though like #7? Or should I leave it as it is and make the rest of the pants?

I used a pair of mene shorts for shading reference and the initial waistline.

I made a quick concept piece to see what kind of problems I might run into and I was curious... would this be simple enough?

hmm... shade the outline of the leaf. The lighter portion outline can have some shading.
and you still haven't make the upper corner of the leaf rounder.

Not sure what you mean by upper corner.
I rounded it a little but it looks somewhat rounded to me o.o

As in not round enough.
The current leaf shape, is roughly a tilted kite shape, upper corner(not the center vein).
If your leaf are all in same direction, I would use viewer top left corner...for number 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9.

I still feel there is something not right about the veins. It is the way they curve...

So the veins are maybe too perpendicular?

Yes... I think the way it falls... doesn't seem to follow the contour of the leaf shape.
Hard to explain how I feel, because I can't grasp the logic yet. x.x
