I think the candy corn and candy apple count under your avatar are the same but it's however many candy apples you have. :/

i have no idea what the other way was because i only joined this year i think it was in agust or earlier i don't remember.though i have earned candy its just not showing up but i don't know how to earn apples XD

You get apples from the trick or treat with the NPC. I just found out how it work. lol You just look at your time and when it like (ex: 7:42pm) you click on the NPC that say "Magnus: 40:49". Hope that help you out
