Rochester NY used to be called the "Flour City" because we were the largest producer of flour in the world in the mid 1800s.
We are now known as the "Flower City" since in the 1850s the need to produce so much flour in Rochester had declined because of westward expansion. But, we had so many seed companies and nurseries for flowers. We can also claim that it fits to this day because of our annual Lilac Fest in May. :)
Which I am happy to say, I can actually go to Highland Park when the lilacs are in bloom this year (yay not in school this semester)
