Too cute.
Teachers mark students down for dotting their lowercase I's cutely on assignments. :c I can understand why, but that's no fun.

Wait...I've never had that happen in any of my assignments that I handwrite, or my friends for that matter (one of them dots her i's with a star)--course, that was also in high school sooo...yeah. If it's a thing in elementary school, I missed out on that after second grade X'D

My mother had it happen to her in what I'm thinking was after elementary school, and so after she graduated, she dotted her I's however the Donald Duck she wanted. That's a momma I can tell I'm related to.

There are still teachers who insist you complete assignments in pen. I don't like pens. Pens don't erase.

Ehh...it depends on the teacher, honestly. And there aren't really any rules against doing the assignment in pencil, then going over it in pen after you've erased and corrected any flubs.

My BF works with a guy who has an elementary school aged son and the teacher informed him that learning to write was optional! WHAT??

Um. What. Excuse me, but that sets off more than a few alarm bells in my head. Granted, that miiiight be from my growing up in the 90s, back in the era of learning writing print and cursive (both of which for me are atrocious, despite the fact that I do a lot of writing and drawing), but it seems to me that learning how to write kinda helps learning to read. Kinda a lot, actually.
And contrary to popular belief, one does indeed need to be literate to navigate the internet without sounding like a weeby troll. I had to learn to read to be able to type this anyway X'D

I once talked to someone who went to a high school where some of the students were too lazy to ever learn to read… A large enough amount that several classes fell behind trying to keep those kids caught up.

When I took my ASVAB to get into the military there was a guy that was trying to join the Army sitting next to me. The Proctor explained everything you had to do and then set the timer and he just sat there without picking up his pencil. So the Proctor comes over and ask why he hasn't started and he says because I need someone to read the questions to me and the answer is and then I could tell you which letter it is. My mouth actually dropped open and I turned over around and looked at him. This gentleman was trying to join the United States Army and he could not read.

Just..how...what...how do you even?! How do you go eighteen-plus years without learning to read?!?!?! Agh....
@ Amane: That high school sounds like the one I went to. I'm not joking; not only did classes get bogged down re-teaching (usually the lazy ones who slept the whole time anyway) how to freaking read, they'd also get bogged down doing refreshers on arithmetic. Arithmetic. My mom's not exactly great with math, but even she knows her times-tables, and can do fractions on paper if not in her head. These dinguses? They'd sit there with their mouths hanging open as the teacher had to explain for the umpteenth time that two-thirds and four-sixths were the same thing.
I didn't learn anything actually new to me in math until my senior year while I was taking pre-calculus. Which is a misnomer, as there's nothing "pre-" about it--it's calculus. Plain and simple.

Meanwhile, I was three years old and trying to read the encyclopedia because I thought it would be a story book like all the books I had read.

I didn't like reading till I found Harry Potter in the second grade, but my actually liking to read pissed off the teacher. For that matter, pretty much everything I did (such as breathing, needing to use the bathroom, sitting at my desk doing nothing...) pissed her off.
She wasn't a good teacher. I'm surprised no other parents complained about her.

That is an awful grade to be squashed in the love of reading isn't it? Shouldn't she have been proud that you wanted to read? Get another job lady, do you want fries with that?

Oh, I'm still a bookworm X'D. You can blame Harry Potter, since my mom made me read the first book before seeing the movie >_>;
That was also the teacher who had a habit of taking one student and sticking them in the corner for the year, and designating them the class scapegoat. Pretty sure she hated kids.
