Yeah, I find the second one rather amusing for how extremely inaccurate it is

Well not really festival per say, but this weekend was "Hina Matsuri", aka "Girl's Day". I didn't really do anything to celebrate. I got some sweets from my staff at work today though, which was a nice belated present.

But I was really surprised that yesterday I received my first White Day present already! For Valentine's Day I gave a bunch of my guy friends and coworkers chocolate, as per tradition. A month later, if they feel like it, guys can return the favor with some other present (in this case, some yummy cookies).

Yeah, but I wasn't even thinking about it. I wasn't really expecting to receive any presents since I just gave store-bought candies (kitkats, lol) to my friends and I the chocolate I made myself (via a kit) went to coworkers at a school I only visit once every other week.

That is pretty early. XDD I didn't realize how soon White Day was either. Seems so much closer when you say "a week away."
I saw some FB posts about Hinamatsuri, but for some reason I was linking it to Shichi-Go-San. Way off in dates!

Also, can't believe that Daylight Savings Time is starting this Sunday. Seems so soon! :gonk:

Oh wow, it's daylight savings again? *makes a mental note* They don't observe the time change in Japan, but I have to pay attention for when I make phone calls back home.

Ah yeah, Shichi-Go-San is different. And in May there is another "Children's Day" too. Plus a "Respect the Elderly Day" in September and a "Coming of Age" day for 20-year-olds in January. So many holidays!

Yuuup~ Can't believe it's almost that time already. I was thinking it was going to happen more... I don't know, just later.

Yeah, Japan likes to celebrate!

Aw man, I'm turning 21 later this year, I clearly should have spent my January in Japan. What is done on that holiday? I haven't heard of it before.

@Cherry: Anyone who turned 20 since the last Coming of Age day gets dressed up fancy (girls usually wear kimonos while guys often wear suits) and then participates in a ceremony to mark their transition to adulthood. Typically they go out and party afterward. As one of my supervisors described it "It's a chance to see young Japanese men and women dressed up beautifully and behaving very badly." Sure enough I saw plenty of men and women on the early trains the next day who clearly had been out all night.

@Feline: You don't have to. Once you click on the map, it will log your location. The rest is just ongoing discussion!

I had an English teacher who wore a kimono when she got married. it was very spur-of-the-moment, and apparently she was wearing the wrong kind.

@fairywaif: Interesting! There's so much to keep in mind when wearing a proper kimono, so I don't know if I'd want to bother with it if it were my wedding since wedding kimonos are even more complex. :gonk: Not to mention expensive. (A standard kimono that girls wear on their coming of age day can cost several thousand dollars.)

Yeah : / Kimonos can be so beautiful, but a western person wanting one just because they think it's lovely, and not knowing the proper significance of that particular item, or which one should be worn for what they want it for, makes it a bit of a mine field D:

Yeah. It takes serious skill to be able to put a kimono on by yourself. Thankfully the one time I was allowed to put the whole thing on, I had someone else assisting me. Plus, you have to be mindful of the specific colors and which obi (sash) to pair it with. Otherwise I might have folded it the wrong way and it would signify that I was a dead person.

Ooh I'm planning to get this Western/Japanese wedding dress mash up for my wedding. X_X I've seen some samples and they're gorgeous.

Don't look at me! I've only worn a full kimono once. I should join the kimono-wearing club sometime though.

Hi guys, I'm from Canada.
We live in igloos, and in the summer, we become hobos because our houses have melted.

Haha, just kidding! It's just a little joke us Canadians like to share.
