BBR, I think I'll do Seda, I love doing curly hair.
And hi Star! Not a whole lot. Just writing fanfiction instead of referencing my film essay.

Oh my god. That's a goddamned Rothko. I knew it would be, when I saw the link. There's so much more to art sales (especially "high" art, like that one) than just the paint and the work involved. The artist died over forty years ago, for starters, and this is one of his "canonical" works, one of the paintings he made at the height of his career, and in his most distinctive style. There are only so many paintings by this guy, and they're unique. The availability of digital replicas has pushed the price of paintings like that up because the original is considered rarer.
That said, the fact that some people are very rich is definitely part of why this sold for so much. The paintings themselves become associated with a certain part of society. For example, one of Rothko's paintings used to belong to the Rockerfeller family (yes that one) and that puts his whole series up in value. (That one sold in 2007 for US$72.84M).

TLDR: that artist is particularly renowned because of the prestige of certain people owning his artwork, and is one of the artists with the highest valued works. Also, what was sold was the original canvas, which is one of a kind. There's limited edition and then there's ONLY edition.

But did you?

-mutters about people disrespecting Rothko in my thread-

I'm kidding, I totally agree that the price is inflated as hell, but there are reasons. It's not just a random painting.

Well I currently have student loan debts coming out my ass so no
But if I was a billionaire I probably would buy art that expensive and then donate it to public galleries because that's where art belongs *shakes fist at people who only buy art to sell it later at a profit*

Rothko's work is a whole lot more awe inspiring in person apparently. It's /huge/ and you just stand in front of it and take it in. The scale alone is kind of moving. To me at least. There's no wrong opinion though. That's the fun of art.

Really? Usually people have the opposite reaction to the Mona Lisa. it's all tiny and behind glass, and there are queues (gross) to see it.
