Alice flinched when she felt a hand touch her shoulder. She stood up quickly and turned around, seeing the pink-haired girl she was trying to protect from before. "Why did you follow me?" she blurted out, sounding rude even though she hadn't meant it to sound rude. She quickly brought her hands up to her hair and brushed it to the back so she could conceal it. "Did you... see?" she asked carefully, afraid of the answer she was going to get.

Finally, a chance to make a new friend after months of isolation in the forest... and this happens... She looked past the girl and saw the boy who had saved her as well. Great... She could see it now: "Freak girl living in the forest, hair changes pink in an instant" all over the headlines. What if she'd be some sort of museum exhibit, everyone coming to visit her and laugh at her. She didn't think she had the strength to put up with that...

Gilbert noticed the girl saw him, so he approached them. He crouched down next to her and examined the strands if her hair. "Oi, that's pretty cool. You wouldn't happen to have....another person living in you as well?" He tilted his head. Had he found another person like him? If so that would prove he wasn't a devils child.

Mindy sat down beside Gilbert and Alice against the insistent urgings inside of her. "You too?" she asked Gilbert. Turning with a lighter heart to Alice, she happily took her hands in her own and smiled brightly, "I followed you because I was worried about you. And yes, I did see. That is okay though. I also have another, person, for lack of a better term, living inside of me. Only she is me too.... Are you okay? Your shaking..." She pushed one of the strands of hair behind Alice's ear and looked over at Gilbert entreatingly. "Hey can you... wait, your bleeding." She touched his forehead gently with one finger and showed him the blood from where a branch had scratched him.

"Another person?" she looked at them in confusion. "Is that what's happening to me? I have... another person inside of me?" She wasn't quite sure what they were talking about, but she didn't doubt it in the least. Weird voices in her head, her colour changing hair, flashes of strength and confidence that she never even knew she had... It was all making sense now. Well... Sort of.

"Do you guys have... weird dreams too?" she asked, "and what do you mean by another person? Is something controlling me?" she wanted to ask a bunch of questions, but she suddenly felt very nervous. She didn't know if it was because she was scared to hear the answer, or because those two guys were still out there. "This isn't the place to talk," she stood up and motioned for the two to follow her, "we can go to my house. It's just over there." she pointed to an area concealed by trees and started towards it.

"By the way, my name's Alice. Alice Dawn."

Mindy stood up with Alice and smiled pleasantly, "It is nice to meet you Alice. I'm Mindy." She beamed another bright smile. She enjoyed making friends. It was usually enjoyable. A voice inside her sighed, "You better all get moving like she suggested. You might believe in the good in others, but not everyone hands out hugs and flowers like candy." Mindy looked at Gilbert before adding, "I think it is different for every person who has this... other side. For me, I don't have dreams. It isn't really another person controlling me as much as another me wanting what is best for me. It is hard to explain."

Gilbert wiped off the blood as if it was nothing. " I have strange dreams yeah. But I'm not an expert on this." He stood up. His dreams consisted of a tea table full of tea and cake, and some clown clad in purple dancing around. He shivered, it was kinda creepy.

The girl she just met, Mindy, was quite the cheerful person. Alice felt like smiling just because her smile was so bright and joyful, but she could only muster an awkward tiny smile in return. "What did you say your name was?" She asked the boy.

After pushing away a few branches, the house appeared as if out of nowhere. It was a cozy little cottage with walls made out of lumber and a sturdy, shingled roof. There was plenty of green space around, which she loved to just lay on when it was a cool, breezy day. "Welcome to my home in the woods," she escorted them inside, "It's not much, I know, but please... make yourselves at home. You're the first guests... well... ever."

When she opened the door, the familiar scent of firewood and pine hit her face. It had three rooms. The living room, dining room, and kitchen were all in the same room, and the other two rooms consisted of her bedroom and the bathroom. All of her different artworks were sprawled all over the walls.

She quickly cleared the art supplies off of the chairs so that they could sit. "Sorry about the mess... I sometimes get absorbed into my artwork and I never have company so..."

"Hey... who exactly are you?" Vincent surveyed the young man in the distance who wore all dark clothes... even his hair was dark. This guy looked like he needed some serious cheering up. The man gave no response. Vincent squinted. He was quite far back and his image was blurred so he couldn't make out any details. He could only see that there was another person beside him. It looked like... a woman? Maybe in her late thirties or so.

"I might ask you the same question." The man finally said, stepping closer.

"I'm Vincent. Now tell me... who are you?"

"My name is... Vincent... Vincent Alistair..." He chuckled darkly, the woman beside him finally coming into focus.

"Mom!" Vincent cried out, fear shooting through his body when he saw that the man had a knife to her throat. "Let her go... now." He growled.

"Oh, but Vincent... this is a figment of your imagination. Don't you remember? Your mother's dead." The man, who called himself the same name, pointed the tip of the knife deeper, causing blood to trickle down her neck. Vincent shook his head and staggered back. "Come on... don't tell me you forgot... You were the one who killed her, after all." The other Vincent snarled, his his as cold as ice. "How could you?"

Vincent slowly opened his eyes. Everything was blurry. He blinked a few times until his surroundings came into focus; he noticed that there had been tears in his eyes and he quickly wiped them away. That nightmare had reminded him about the secret that he kept hidden, locked away at the back of his mind, hoping it would never surface again. But now it had...

His head was pounding and he groaned in response. His memory of the previous day was foggy... Why did he do this to himself? The hangover was always the worst part. Oh... right... to forget. The only thing he could slightly remember was... a girl. He couldn't remember exactly what she had looked like except for the fact that she had brown hair and glasses.

He sighed, falling back onto the bed. He just wanted to disappear.

Mindy knodded and took a seat. She turned and looked at the boy to hear what his name was. It must be a nice name since he seemed so kind. She beamed a happy smile with glittering eyes of joy at the two of them. This was such a cozy little place. And the artwork was intriguing. Maybe she would look at them closer later.

Outside, two grumpy boys stomped into the clearing. The broken tree limbs from Gilbert had led to this spot. They saw the cliffs and walked out to the edge of them. It was a long way down, but a good view. They could even see where they had been playing volleyball earlier and tormenting the pink-haired girl. Of which they couldn't find. Turning back, they glanced around the clearing. The three nuisances couldn't have disappeared. However there was three of them now instead of one. Sure two were girls, but they were outnumbered. They turned to head back to the beach.

Gilbert avoided their eyes, remaining standing despite the invitation. "It's Gilbert. Nothing much. " He payed with his fringe a little, making sure it was impossible to see his other eye. Whilst doing this he checked out the room. It was really pretty. Despite only one person living there, it felt more homey than his three person house. But that could be because his house was a hell hole.

Mindy excitedly jumped up and gave each one a quick hug that was bound to startle them. Jumping in place with her hands clasped to her chest she happily said, "I'm so glad to have met you Gilbert and Alice. What are your 'other selves' like? Mine is silver-haired, more athletic, and a bit serious. She is strong too. She takes over when she thinks it best, but will give me back control of our body when even she must admit it is alight. You should listen to her. She is telling me right now not to scare you. But your friends who have a similar friend inside of you. So I am sure it is okay." Spinning in place while swinging her arms out and then behind her, she asked, So tell me, how long have you known about them? I only learned of mine when I was about 18. Of course I'm 23 now, so the last 5 years have been pretty cool. But what about you?" Finally she stopped talking happily and turned joyful eyes to listen to what they might have to say. She hadn't meant to just keep going and going, but she felt at ease with them and felt a flutter of happiness that was forced or uncertain.

Gilbert was startled by the hug, and tried to ush her away, but she was gone in seconds. He looked away again and scratched his head. "Yours seems cool. Mines really weird. He's a stupid clown. With a funny hat." Gilbert twitched a little as he heard something like a whisper in his ear. Aw now now, must we say such horrible things about me? And my hat is sexy thank you! Gilbert frowned. Yes we must, you're an idiot. And no, it's not sexy. he replied back in his mind. He felt the hatters presence leave after that, probably going back to his lonesome tea table.

Alice was startled when the girl suddenly jumped up and hugged her. It was a weird feeling, but it felt kind of nice. Hugging was a form of affection, right? People only hug when they like each other. Like... friends. "Um, I only just found out about mine today... But I had dreams."

"Assuming this is true, then my... other me... doesn't look like she's trying to help me... She's actually kind of frightening. I had a dream that I was running away from her..." She sat down at the table shakily after recalling the nightmare. "I just want to know why me? And why now?"

She then remembered something. "I read something about this in a book once... Alter Egos, I think they called it? Of course, it was a fictional novel, but maybe that applies to us right now." They probably thought she was crazy, comparing them to a fictional novel. "They say that these Alter Egos are hidden in your body until you reach the prime time of your life, around seventeen to twenty-four, and that's when they start to show themselves. Usually something triggers it." She left out the part about secret desires or weaknesses being one of the triggering points. She was sure that her Alter Ego was not what she wanted to be. Was she?

The thing about novels perked Gilbert's interest, he looked at the Alice for once, examining her. She looked fairly pretty. Her hair suited the figure of her face, so did her eye color. "Well, what mine has told me is similar to that, I think. He's confusing, always talking in riddles." Gilbert chuckled a little, how could something inside of him be so different from him. "Mine also said that these 'Alter Egos'," Gilbert used Alice's term slightly mockingly. "come from different dimensions. He said he did anyway." Gilbert closed his eye thoughtly, and felt the presence of the hatter again, he was giving off a happy vibe, as is he was agreeing with what Gilbert said. "But they definitely communicate through dreams. Though sometimes I have dreams, where I'm the only one there. On those nights, I feel as if I haven't slept at all. Yet I know I did."

Mindy looked attentively from one to the other. Their alter egos sounded pretty cool in their own ways. She wished hers would come in dreams too. "Silly me is what you are. I am a different race of "alter ego" as they put it. I am you and you are me. Trust me, you need me more than you realize." She felt confusion at that but dismissed it. It surely wasn't important. She had two friends now and was simply happy to be with them. Perhaps they would be willing to hang out on the beach later. They were having such a good conversation, but one she didn't quite feel like she fit into. Gilbert seemed a bit serious, but he had been willing to help out perfects strangers earlier so he was a good guy. Alice was shy but really sweet. She deserved to have a friend to hang out with. Besides her alter ego that is. And friends helped each other. Perhaps even if she didn't have the answers, she could be encouraging. With a bright and friendly smile, she offered, "They don't seem like they mean you harm. Have either of you ever been hurt by your alter egos? Perhaps they mean well but their personality is such that it was noticed right away." She looked hopefully between the two of them. They had gone to such serious expressions so quickly and she was worried for them. She had survived 5 years with hers. She was a living testament that they would be okay.

She thought she saw a flash of interest in Gilbert's eyes and he began to be more talkative. Maybe he was starting to feel more relaxed. We three just met each other after all... We barely know anything about each other. She then noticed that he was looking at her very intently and she felt her cheeks go pink.

"U-um, not really." She quickly turned her attention to Mindy. "Aside from the re-occurring dreams, the weird voices in my head, and my colour-changing hair, nothing else has happened." She frowned. "I just hope that she won't take over my body, or change me into someone I'm not. I've read that some Alter Egos take over the host body while others just merge with theirs."

She suddenly shot up from her chair. "Oh! Where are my manners? You guys must be starving! Can I get you anything to eat? Or drink?"

Mindy beamed at her in delight. Something to eat or drink would be nice. Especially after all the running she had done earlier. "I don't suppose you might have tea?" She loved tea a lot. It was a beverage that made all things better. Or in this case, made good things great. "Would you like help with anything in the kitchen?" She figured she better offer. Helping others was the only thing she felt she did right. Also though, she enjoyed it.

"Mine won't try to hurt me, he values my body too much.". Gilbert stated, barely audible. It was the truth. The hatter loved living inside his body, trying to break free and cause ruckus in this world. He couldn't possibly harm Gilbert.
"I'm fine. I don't want any" Gilbert's stomach disagreed, letting out a loud rumble.

Luka decided to go for a short walk, the fresh air would do him some good. He stepped out into the sunlight thankful for the warmth it presented him with. He looked up at the clear blue sky, and couldn't help but smile a bit. He turned away from where he lived, and the troubles he held on his mind left behind at least for the moment. He walked along not to sure where he was going at all, but noticed the strange people up ahead.

She laughed. "Okay, some tea for Mindy and some food for Gilbert." She opened the fridge door and frowned. She turned around slowly. "Um... I seem to have... run out of food." She scratched her head sheepishly. "I must've been too absorbed in my painting to notice..." She admitted. Maybe she was a little too obsessed with her artwork.

She then turned to Mindy. "How about we go into town to pick up some groceries and come back for a feast!" She suggested, growing a little excited. She'd finally be able to have a nice dinner with other people. She faced Gilbert. "How about it?" She smiled, hoping he'd agree to it. "Unless..." She looked back at Mindy, "you guys have somewhere else to go..."

She then heard a knock on the door. "Come in! The door's unlocked." She called out, not fully realizing that the person knocking on the door was a stranger and could've been the bullies. In fact, she'd completely forgot about the bullies with all this "Alter Ego" talk.

Gilbert sighed and took a few steps back to lean on a clear wall. He'd rather not stay, but he had no where else to go, and food would probably not come easily. Keeping this in mind, he accepted the suggestion, and prepared mentally to go shopping with girls.
The hatter seemed excited, so Gilbert guessed that the hatter was a bit of a perv. The hatter did not sit well with this...
When the knocking started in the door, Gilbert's eyes flashed open, and he tilted his head slightly in that direction. His usual frown reforming on his face. He didn't now who was on the other side of the door, it could be those two losers from earlier. He looked back at Alice. She didn't ask who they were, maybe she knew them and had planned for them to come over before. He faced back towards the door, relaxed, but prepared to fight. The hatter buzzed, hoping to get some of the possible action.

Blęc Sunu fixed the sash just right so that, despite the plaid design, the dull and dark blue shades of it, combined with the flat, creaseless body, would be more of an accent than a feature to his apparel. Over it was the male version of a buttonless dress-suit, clinging close but flared enough at the bottom to give him a waist. It was a soft shade of black, joined by a pair of similar pants. The sleeves and the legs pulled tighter than what most men preferred, but it did not mold to him, giving him the appearance of being taller than five-eleven and thinner, save at the shoulders. Beneath it was a tucked-in, button-up, collared shirt made of material just shy of combating velvet for faintest shimmer of light. He was a standing, stretched shadow.
For all that his clothes tried to mimic, his fuliginic hair made them pale in shame. It was so empty of color that it inked unreally from his skull like a bad dye-job. He might have gotten away with it better had his skin grown into his age. Instead it was as white as the day he came out of the womb, but at least the pearlescent qualities gave him more character. His head was trimmed neatly, along with what little facial hair he had, obsessively proper and not a strand out of place. It matched the other carved features; some of them forced in ways even he would have avoided had he the choice, but all Indian.
His nose had once had a bump on the bridge, but, to remove all flaws in pursuit of advancement, his mother had had broken and remolded. He thanked God that that had been her only issue with his looks that she could change without killing him; she did not like his Adam’s apple either. His jaw curved smoothly toward his chin and angled up tidily for his cheeks, following that perfect profile that fit the golden ratio. Dark cyan, like turquoise, scanned over each particle just to be sure and he even pulled out a pair of scissors when he perceived a wild hair at his temple. Without anyone around, he did not try to hide the piercing glare he could so easily wear. His only soft feature were his lips, short in length but compensating by their plumpness.
He walked from the mirror into the entryway of his home and pulled an Italian hat from off the holder, flipping it onto his head and slipping on yet another raven garment, a jacket, before he was out the door. While someone might question why he emulated the Mafia out of respect, many were not aware of just how much they helped the community as compared to the corrupt police of the day and drunken husbands who used their wives as punching bags. If he had to be involved in crime, then he would play the part in his own way. This was his territory and, after arguing with his mother for many years, he came to the conclusion that he was doing the same as any other politician. He just did not pretend that he was voted in, and, unlike them and his mother, he did want to use it for good and avoided using force on those that did not initiated it.
Thanks to those principles and his respect of those Mediterranean gangsters, he had managed to create a business that took up a whole block of the city. After first building his hidden empire with Mommy’s help, he had purchased a restaurant, remodeling into his favorite cuisine. Take a guess what that was. He hired true Italian cooks and those with the same love of its qualities, if from a different base perspective, and eventually expanded by buying up neighboring areas. It would have been less expensive to just go for other parts of the city, but he wanted to make a point. He waited for either one of those that sold him the land to go to the government claiming he had stolen it by not going through the appropriate channels or for a police officer to question why he was not paying taxes.
Both happened, as a matter of fact. Landing him in a lawsuit where the accuser mysteriously disappeared, an ignorant man who had assumed that Blęc, younger than his sixteen years now, would be a pushover. Oh, yeah, did he mention he had been emancipated at fourteen? That’s another story for his first business. In any case, with no evidence of foul play and Blęc revealing the deed, they did not accuse the young teen of murder, but they did demand protection money: taxes. They never saw a cent, and those that tried were either convinced not to trouble Blęc by other officers under his hand or convinced to join in, but if they messed up, they better pray the boys in blue arrested them.
Blęc was not innocent, though he did have standards, and, contrary to causing fear in the community, it widely accepted him. Those that disturbed society, whether in the eyes of the government or of the people, found themselves missing. The lack of evidence was enough to terrify enemies, because the stories just grew into lives of their own to credit him far more than even his mother deserved. However, there were times where criminals attempted to use his doctrine against him. With no family—something the Mafia had held highly and would find unusual not to have—they targeted friendly acquaintances and employees, knowing he would not retaliate in the same, but he did retaliate. Even if he lost people, threats were disposed off.
He greeted everyone he came in contact with even before he made it to work, pulling up fashioned, dark brows to soften his eyes and smiling so that as much teeth showed as possible so that it was clear he was smiling. That extra effort always paid off, but he always had to massage his cheeks after that Ken-smile. He had always speculated that those that appeared before large crowds did so to prevent any other expressions. It also assisted in preventing the wearer from running away, afraid, but perhaps that was just in Blęc’s head, among many things.
It was too early for his second job, a reputable one regarding food, but, in the light of day, he started on his primary. He made it into the kitchen and crossed his arms, leaning a buttock against the counter as his messengers reported anything pertinent or suspicious. Aside from some unlikely insurgents and, of course, backstabbing, he was not worried. Oh, and his garden needed more watering. It added a touch of quaintness and relaxation to the restaurant, and also allowed everything to be fresh.
With that, he dismissed them, relaxing his arms. While he now shared his mother’s need for power, he still had some stage-fright and, if it started getting the better of him, his skin would flush an unruly color of red. He took a deep breath and brushed out the nailprints on his sleeves. His mother had taught him how to control himself, but only so much. It was one of those I-taught-you-everything-you-know-but-not-everything-I-know situations. She could use it against him as easily as heat melted butter on an iron pan.
The rest of the day happened at its own lackadaisical pace, until dinner, and the hectic hustle and bustle took over. Waiters and waitresses ran everywhere in every direction at once, from out of the kitchen, to the dining areas in and out of the building. They showed balances acts that could rival highwire acrobats and memory close to eidetic. Thanks to mother’s previous lifestyles, they had six-course meals that cost like that of one meal or buffets of other restaurants. Imagine, prices dropping without having to pay taxes. Needless to say, all visitors were thankful.
Blęc was always one of them, but even he liked to try different styles every now and then, so specialty orders were accepted. Most chefs knew more than just Italian and it cost almost as little as the regular menu meals. Unlike the rest of the guests, he sat in the most secure corner of the building, viewing all the movement and memorizing faces. It helped to be as observant as any detective in his choice of career. It was a bit disconcerting though that he was alone in a large, cushy booth. Funny that, though he wanted company, the one he knew was coming he could have done without.

Luka was unsure why his feet had brought him here. Slowly he pushed the door open peeking in to look at the people he had seen before. He noticed the eyes on him and immediately felt very self concious. "They will be able to tell..." the voice whispered in his ear. He shuddered lightly, not being able to say a word.

The boy at the door wasn't the boys from before, so Gilbert relaxed a little. He was by-himself as well, so he'd be easy to take. Gilbert glanced over at Alice, curious as to what her relation with this newcomer was, and how she was going to greet him.

Alice stopped talking when she saw the newcomer enter the room. She'd never seen him before and she finally realized the danger of just allowing anyone to enter her house. "Who... might you be?" She asked the boy... he seemed to be somewhere around their age, maybe a little younger. She looked at both Mindy and Gilbert and saw that they had confused looks on their faces too. They obviously had no clue who this guy was either.

He didn't respond and Alice felt her heart start to beat a little faster. Who was this guy? And why wasn't he answering her simple question? "Who are you?" She repeated her question, seeing that the boy looked slightly scared. He didn't look like he came from the town nearby. His skin was a little darker than those of the townspeople, and his hair and clothing were quite different too. "It's okay... you don't have to be scared of us. We won't hurt you..." She spoke softer, hoping that the young boy wasn't here to harm any of them. She knew she wouldn't be able to protect any of them, which was what added to her fear.

Gilbert closed his eyes and bumped his head n the wall. The stupid girl had no idea who this person was. Why would she let a random into her home! Well... He and Mindy were randoms as well, but they had protected her, so it was more understandable. The hatter sensed something about the boy, and was iLife active, for once in his lowly life, but Gilbert couldn't understand.
