Scared, sad, angry... Jacob had many emotions boiling around inside of him. Alexis could taste them, and it made him curious. Had he felt like this once? Possibly, the emotions seemed so familiar and yet, so distant. Had he cried and been so afraid he would do anything to escape? He couldn't remember. He buried his face into Jacob's side, enjoying the warmth that the man radiated. Even Dan wasn't this warm. Maybe Alexis could sleep with Jacob, to comfort him during the night. He would like that.

He got up from where he was, slithering over to his rock. He wanted to show Jacob around the small forested yard that he was allowed to explore. His smooth rock, the old tree that had a strange smell to it, the bushes by the windows he often caught rats and lizards in, even the small cave under the rock he sometimes slept in. but Jacob didn't seem interesting in moving from where he lay. "Jay! Pleasssse!" He hissed in annoyance, showing his long fangs. "Come."

When he was left, he didn't bother looking at where Alexis had gone. He could be planning a pouncing attack, or something to shock Jake, but at this point he was tired. He hadn't slept well, and had been cut up and burned and tased various times. He hadn't liked it at all of course, and it had worn him out even more. Until he heard Alexis's annoyed calls and he looked in time to see the fangs. "Eck, okay, okay!" He shook his head, tuning over and getting onto his hands and knees and crawling a few paces before forcing himself up, his feet crunching on the cool ground. "What's up...?" He looked around the area. It was pretty large. Maybe he could climb a tree and jump over the fence... But no. The branches were too high. He had a good amount of strength but couldn't hug a tree trunk that round and shimmy up. He chuckled bitterly at the thought and looked at Alexis.

Alexis touched the rock, showing his new friend his favourite place in the whole house. "Isss warm." His tongue flickered as he slithered around the rock and showed Jacob the cave under the rock. It smelt like Earth and was a nice place to hide whenever he didn't feel like seeing Dan. He often slept there when he was locked outside, if it wasn't cold enough. "Hide here." He then moved quickly from the rock, going to the nice smelling tree and licking the bark. "Isss smelling good." He then showed Jacob the bushes, showing him where the lizards hid during the summer. It was too cold for them during the Winter. "Tasssty lizardss."

He smiled up at Jacob, wondering if the man found his yard just as exciting as he did. The look on his face answered Alexis' wondering. He seemed distant, still lost in thought about what had happened that morning. Maybe he was worrying about the torture that would come again. Alexis licked his hand in comfort, going around the bushes and tree to show Jacob the small pond there. In the summer when it got really hot, he swam in to to cool himself down. There were frogs and turtles here too, but they were hibernating at the moment. "Swimming here in summer."

He followed the young man, curious but thinking. Maybe he could just end it quickly. Run to the fence and have it finished. Maybe he could use the blanket from his room, toss it up to one of the branches in the trees and begin pulling himself up. Then he could get to one of the other trees and over the fence and get down the same way. Maybe he could... He watched Alexis, smiling when he received a lick to the hand. Such an animal thing to do. Like he didn't know what else to do to get Jake's attention. How old was the guy, anyway? More than twenty, below twenty seven, somewhere in between there, it had to be right.

He looked at the pond and smiled a bit. Alexis loved the outside. No doubt, it was away from Dan. He stepped forward and knelt, putting his hand in the water and shivering at the cold. Oh, he loved that. Loved how cold it was. He put more of his hand down, his arm, up to his elbow and rubbed his hands together, then over his face. "Ah... That wakes me up." He smiled at Alexis, hoping his tension, stress, bubbling fear wasn't so obvious to be smelled. How acute was that tongue? How well could Alexis see? He wished he could ask but felt like that was prying too far. And what did he remember? What didn't he? It was so much at once.

Alexis didn't like the cold. Because of his cold-blood, he had no way to regulate his body temperature. During the hot summers, he needed to swim else he would die of a heat stroke. During the winter he had to stay warm else he would freeze to death. Jacob seemed to be the exact opposite. He rubbed against the warm legs, tasting the scent again. Jacob's taste was so interesting, so different to what he was used to. It was a shame his effort at cheering his friend up hadn't seemed to work. He could taste the fear and plotting. He hoped Jacob wouldn't run away without him, or do something stupid like try to kill himself.

"Don't lossse hope." He smiled slightly, the expression weird on his face. It had been a long time since he had smiled.

On his knees, Jake fell slack at Alexis's words. The poor thing had been here so long and yet he was telling Jake not to lose hope. Jake, the one that hadn't gone through some horrifying metamorphosis. Jake, the one that healed almost immediately after being cut or burned, the one that could wander almost free. He had to manage a smile in return, though. Alexis was the one looking out for him right now and he felt like he should help Alexis in some way. He pulled the young man's arms up and around his neck, and pulled him into a gentle hug. How long had it been since Alexis had gotten an actual hug? Had he been taken from his parents, and the last hug he got was when he was ten years old, before heading off to school? Maybe he'd struggled out of his parents' embrace with an embarrassed whine and hurried off with his head down, hoping his friends hadn't seen.

He felt that anguish bubble up and he bit back another cry. Funny---Jake hadn't cried in a long time. Years. Now he just couldn't seem to stop.

A hug...? This one was different from the hugs Dan gave him. Dan hugged him like an animal, treated him like his pet. Jacob seemed to see the human inside of him. The human he had once been. He licked Jacob's ear, tickling it and glad to hear the small gasp that his friend made. "No crying." He didn't want the man to be sad any more. Maybe he would learn to be happy with the nice outside area Dan provided them. The yummy food Dan knew how to make and the TV he was allowed to watch. Alexis hadn't watched TV in a long time. It was hard to focus on the flickering box. It gave him a headache.

He hissed happily to himself, slithering away from Jacob and hiding under his rock. He giggled slightly, peering from his hiding place and wondering if the man would come looking for him. He could move fast when he wanted to, even if he no longer knew how to walk on two legs.

The cold tongue against his ear was a surprise, and he snapped out of his pity party, releasing Alexis and watching him hurry off. Behind the rock? Maybe under it. He didn't get up onto his feet---he stayed on his hands and knees, raising his knees off the ground to keep the toes of his shoes on the ground. He slipped forward, creeping toward where he heard the quiet giggle. "I hear you." He whispered, mimicking Alexis's movement, though not nearly as fluidly as he could manage. "I see you!" He called, laughing at the movement he could see. He paused, lowering himself to the cool ground and wiggling a little to get closer to the frost and cold earth. He almost forgot he was in a horrible place, having horrible things planned for him. But Alexis didn't like Jake's sadness, so he wouldn't show it. He needed this, this friendship, this attachment, partnership, something reliable, and Alexis was... sweet. Kind. Something corrupted by Dan and yet pure in some odd, different way.

Alexis hissed, trying to scare Jacob away from his hiding spot. He showed his fangs, which were very long and sharp, yet he had never used them to bite anything other than the rats and birds he caught. Jacob backed away slightly, and Alexis came out of his hiding spot briefly, licking Jacob's face. He nipped the man's nose, not using his fangs to bite, so it would have felt like a small pinch. He then retreated back into his small cave, which was only big enough for him to be inside.

"Jay, you can't come in. No room, too fat," he giggled again, curling up and watching the man outside of the cave.

Jake shook his head, putting a hand to his nose and drawing back. "Too fat!?" He exclaimed, laughing and shaking his head. He looked around, jumping up onto the rock and bending over, looking into the hole far enough away not to be easily reached unless Alexis came out more than halfway. "I am not! I'm just not... small, like you." He shook his head, letting his hair out of its rough ponytail and shook it out, letting it hang over his head. It curled gently, mostly dry from his earlier shower, and he watched Alexis stare at it. "Don't try to eat it, it's mine." Jake smiled, thinking himself stupid to warn Alexis against eating his hair, since Alexis was more than obviously very intelligent. He just forgot some of his humanity, and that was sad. He would bring it back. He had to. Then they could find a way to get out. They had to.

Alexis watched the hair dangle from above him, smiling at how is wriggled on Jacob's head like small snakes. his own hair was long and straight, and was cleaned and brushed almost daily by Dan. Sometimes he got it tangled in branches outside and Dan would trim the ends so he wouldn't get so easily caught up. Dan was kind to him, but what did he really feel about the man? He was someone that took care of him, but he was also the reason why he had changed into what he was now. Alexis had been his successful experiment, not like the others. Why was he so different to the others? Because he had survived the transformation? The hours upon hours of surgery, days and days of drugs... Why was he remembering this now?

He came out from his hiding place, suddenly wanting to go back inside. It was cold. He was freezing. Of course, he had forgotten about Jacob's warmth. He crawled onto the rock next to him, lying across his lap in desperation. His cold blood warmed slightly and he felt energy return to him.

He was surprised at Alexis's sudden movement, but not so much as the surprise that came when he laid out across him. "God... You're cold." he pulled Alexis up, putting his arms and legs around him for better coverage and pulled him close. "Warm up. Gotta stay warm, okay? That bastard... Leaving you out here when it's so cold... Doesn't he know how cold you get...? God, he's gotta know. This must be so uncomfortable for you." He went quiet, putting his cheek against Alexis' hair. Smooth hair, it had to be well kept. He couldn't help but pull his hand gently through his hair, feel the silken strands. It was amazing. Smooth, shiny. Did Dan take such special care of his 'pet'? Show him off in a way, take pictures, lament that long, beautiful sheet on Alexis's head? The creep... What did he make Alexis do? The thought made Jake feel sick and he pushed it away hard. He didn't want to think of that. Not with his arms and legs wrapped around Alexis.

Dan did know how to take good care of Alexis. He was allowed to come outside to get away if he needed to, to cool down in the summer. Sometimes he would be locked outside in the cold, but never long enough to kill him. Sometimes he was naughty and had to be punished. But he was never forced into a cage, or locked away somewhere. Dan was a good owner, he just... Alexis grimaced, feeling pain shooting through his body. It happened every now and then, since his surgeries. The scars on his chest and back hurt, burning like he had been cut open once again. He stiffened until the pain subsided, licking Jacob's face.

"Warm, like fire." He sniffed the man's skin. "Healsss fassst. It'sss why Dan isss interesssted in you." What had the man been talking about? Seeing just how far Jacob's healing could go? Breaking bones? Making him drink poison eventually... No, Alexis wouldn't say anything about it to Jacob. Not while the man was finally not so upset.

Jake smiled a bit, but it was somewhat forced, strained and tight on his lips. "I guess." He muttered, shifting a little so the rock didn't bite into his backside so much. "But he's still a horrible person... I don't care what he's done... He's hurt people." Jake shook his head, closing his eyes. "God... Haven't you been in his basement, Alexis?" He wasn't really talking to the creature, the man. "He keeps... He... It's awful. And what he wants to do to me... What he's done to you... I know he... he... feeds you and gives you a warm place, but... He's not right. He's..." Jake swallowed hard and breathed in to calm himself. His heart was beating fast, and he willed it to slow. And after it did, he hid his face in Alexis's hair. "I just want to get out... I want to get you out of here... It's... not right."

He sighed deeply, easing himself out of that sudden spike of rage and fear. Alexis could feel it, but he didn't want to make Alexis feel badly. He wasn't helping himself, either, getting all worked up.

Alexis' tongue flickered as he tasted Jacob's sadness and rage raise and then gently fall again. He didn't know how to help the man feel any better about the situation. Dan was mean sometimes, yes. The things he did to their guests... But what was in the basement? Alexis was not allowed down there, but a part of him didn't want to go down there. Something had happened to him... He had been turned into what he was now down there, even though he couldn't remember a thing about it.

The air around them was getting cooler and Alexis tasted the air. Late afternoon already? Jacob had been down in the laboratory for several hours, being tortured... He felt sad for the man. Tomorrow he would have to endure it again, and then the next day and next... He hoped his friend came soon.

Jake was quiet for a time since Alexis didn't respond with words. He really didn't need---or want---to talk anyway. Not voicing his fears, his anger, letting it all boil inside while he sat with a strange, coldblooded experiment and rocked back and forth slowly, petting his hand through the silken hair. "It's getting late in the day..." He finally muttered, tearing his thoughts away from the people he'd seen in the cages, between angry screams shaking bars and terrified, limp lumps trying to make themselves as small as possible. He didn't want to be them. What had they been enduring? Did Alexis hear, or was the lab somehow soundproofed? Alexis seemed so blissfully unaware of the lower part of the house. That place out of a horror movie. He didn't even seem to remember himself.

"Hey, you want to go in...?" Jake asked, feeling Alexis's skin. He was warm, almost naturally so, like a normal human would be. He didn't know how long it would last but knew serpents could store the heat for a while in neutral temperatures. And in the house, it was warm. Too warm for Jake, but he wouldn't ask that the heat be turned down if it were for Alexis's benefit.

Alexis sighed, his tongue tasting the outside air one last time. He wished Jacob could hide outside under his rock so he didn't have to face Dan again. As far as Alexis knew, Dan didn't know about the small cave at all. He hissed to himself, slithering out of Jacob's arms and moving towards the door. He knew that Dan would still be in his office until night time settled in. Sometimes the man would watch TV and Alexis would lay across his lap for comfort. But with a major discovery like Jacob, Dan would only come out of his office to eat.

He waited patiently at the door, waiting for Jacob to catch up and open it for him. He was surprised when it opened suddenly and Dan stood in the threshold, smiling down at him and then looking over to Jacob. A sudden feeling overtook Alexis right then. He felt like he hated Dan and wanted to bite him, to inject the poison he had in his fangs that Dan didn't know about. He crawled past the man instead, and into the warm house.

"Ah, glad to see you enjoyed yourself. My garden is beautiful, isn't it? I made it with my pet in mind, of course. He especially likes the big rock you two were lying on, and the pond in the summer. It gets pretty hot here, would you believe?" Dan grinned, stepping to a side so Jacob could enter the house. ''I've just finished writing up some hypothesises and idea for further experimentation. I'm so happy you agreed to let me work on you."

Jake was reaching for the handle of the door when it swung open, and stood shellshocked while Dan spoke. He was on the top step into the house when Dan's voice covered him with a blanket of anger, leaving him seething and surprised that he didn't just burst into flame right there. "I didn't agree to this shit." He snapped. "I agreed to... to some medical tests, to... maybe test some new medicine or technology, not being some sick fucking project that probably gets you off in the meantime." He sneered, covering his bubbling terror in wondering what Dan would do when faced with Jake's words. But he didn't want to wait around. Dan wasn't saying anything, so he took the chance to shoulder past, not looking at Alexis, and stomp to the room he begrudgingly called his for now.

Would Dan kill him? Would he get tired of Jake eventually and just... shoot him in the head? He didn't doubt his brain couldn't heal fast enough to save him, or his heart. Maybe if he struck in either of those places Jake would be dead immediately. Like a normal damn person. He flopped onto his bed, not bothering to close the door, subconsciously obeying one of Dan's rules. He threw an arm over his eyes and let out a wavering, sighing breath.

Dan clicked his tongue and glanced over to his pet, who was slithering about the living room. "Such language that young man has," he sighed, closing the door and going to the kitchen. His stomach felt empty after a whole day of researching and writing down notes. What he had seen and experienced... He had to get it on camera, he had to submit his findings to the scientific community. He had hidden his experiments from them in fear of being ridiculed or worse. He knew that the people of this time were not ready for this advancement in human biology and he would be arrested for torture or some lie they would make up about him.

He started on making dinner, tossing his pet a bit of meat to eat in the meantime. The creature ate it gratefully and rubbed against his legs, wanting more. Dan chuckled and smiled. "Not yet, my pet. You can have your dinner once our guest has eaten. I wonder what sort of food he likes? Well, I know he'll like this. At least we are never out of meat." He laughed again, finishing up his meal and plating up some for Jacob. He brought the plate to the man's room, placing it on a drawer before leaving without a word. He didn't want Jacob to be even more mad at him. He went to get his own meal, ignoring his pet who crawled past him and into Jacob's room.

He dissolved into hitting one of the pillows at the head of the bed. Jake was so pissed off, he didn't know what else to do. Cry? No. He wouldn't cry. Scream? He couldn't scare Alexis like that. How could he care about Alexis so soon after meeting him? Meeting him in such an... interesting way? Maybe because Alexis was the one that had shown some form of interest and didn't want to hurt him in some way. The one that was curious, but intelligent, and so... odd. Such a weird thing, but more human than that bastard doctor... scientist... whatever he was. Freak was what he was. Deranged. A fucking psychopath.

He stopped by the time Dan came in. Before leaving, Dan gave him a smile but didn't say anything, leaving whatever he made on the dresser. A few moments after he left, Alexis entered. "Hey..." Jake said with a somewhat shaky voice. "Hey... Sorry if I seem mad... I just am. I can't help it." He sighed, getting up and taking a careful step forward, looking at what lay on the dresser. It was meat, of course. Probably some of what he fed Alexis earlier. But the sight of it turned his stomach. He gave a moaning growl and turned away, flopping face-first onto the bed and curling up into a ball as tight as he could go. Maybe Dan had put something in the meat. Poison? Did he want to weaken Jake? He didn't know, but he definitely wasn't hungry.

Alexis sniffed around Jacob's room, looking up at the plate of food in interest. If Jacob wasn't going to eat it, maybe Alexis could? He didn't like cooked meat as much as raw, but he was always so hungry. He stood on his feet, using the dresser to prop himself up against. He licked the food first, hating how hot it was. He then carefully grabbed a slice of meat with his mouth and dragged it off the plate, swallowing it on his way back onto the floor. He glanced over to Jacob, wondering if he would be yelled at for stealing the man's food.

After a while of silence, Alexis crawled up onto the bed and licked the man's face. He wasn't crying, but was feeling utterly helpless and really angry.

Jake barely watched Alexis from the corner of his eye, hoping he didn't get whatever could possibly have been hidden in that plate of food. But maybe he was used to it. Maybe he got drugged all the time. Unless it was poison. Maybe he should have eaten it. Or at least put it out of Alexis's reach. He sighed, closing his eyes until he felt the bed dip with a new weight, and Alexis was near, warm tongue gliding over Jake's face. He wrinkled his nose, but didn't turn away from it. Alexis was... sweet. Kind. Better than Dan ever could be. What had he been like before? Before he turned into this... thing? He was still human, of course. Still human, with a little something else.

"I hope you don't take it personally when I say I hate that bastard." He said, pulling Alexis close in a momentary breach of self-consciousness and distance. "I hate him so much. Everything about him. I can give him a pass for not apparently hurting you but God I hate him so much..." He breathed in shakily, letting it out in a heavy puff. "It's like the only good thing about this is you." He chuckled bitterly, turning his head and burying his face in the mattress.

Alexis hissed soothingly, enjoying being close to Jacob. His bed was comfortable, more so than Alexis' part of floor under a heat lamp. He wondered if Dan would let him sleep with Jacob, to keep him company and make him feel a bit calmer. He was sure Dan would do just that. Alexis had never had a chance to get to know any of the strangers that came to their home. He was hidden from them for a day, and only briefly saw them as they were whisked away downstairs. He never saw them again.

He understood Jacob's anger at Dan. Anyone would be mad at someone that forced them to stay and hurt them. Even Alexis didn't like the man, but for years he had been the only person around to keep him company and to take care of him. He didn't know how to put this into words so he continued to hush Jacob, hoping that the sadness he tasted didn't well over into tears. "Dan isss bad man, I know," he said finally. He didn't want Jacob to think he loved Dan. It was more... He needed Dan to live.

Jake closed his eyes, looking up to the ceiling and twining his finger through the sheet underneath him. Then Alexis's words came to him. "He is." Jake agreed tightly. "Why don't you hurt him? Make him pay for doing bad things to others, to you? You could bite him, or..." Or kill him. He wanted to kill Dan but was afraid of the guy. How strong was he, really? He'd bet ten dollars against Tim a few months back in an arm wrestling wager and thought he'd have a pretty good chance since Tim is so lean, but he'd lost in fewer seconds than he had wagered dollars. What if Dan were made of iron inside? What if he could throw a punch that killed him with one strike?

He wouldn't put that up to bet. He had a whole hell of a lot more to lose than ten dollars now. He wished his phone would work. He hadn't bothered trying it out again, knowing he wouldn't get any service and he'd rather not feel even more helpless than he already was.

Alexis went quiet, looking away from Jacob. It was too complicated for him to even begin to explain to his new friend. How could he put his dependency on Dan into words? He needed the man. He fed him, clothed him, bathed him, kept him company when he was sad or lonely, played music for him to cheer him up... He couldn't hurt Dan. Even if Dan hurt so many others, and had hurt him. He couldn't remember anything about his surgery, or what he was like before he was turned into what he was now. Why would he want to hurt Dan? Maybe before he had changed, he was in a worse situation than he was in now.

He remained quiet, just being close to Jacob should have been comfort enough. The man seemed tired, but Alexis doubted Jacob would be able to sleep. Tomorrow he would be taken down to the lab and tortured again. He was already weak from today and not eating for that long as well. There was no hope for him fighting Dan and winning. He just had to hope that Jacob's friend would come to pick him up.

-

Tim bit his lip and checked his cell phone for the hundredth time that hour. It had only been a day since he had taken his friend to the house out in the middle of nowhere, and Jake had said he'd be a week at the most, but something was worrying him. It hadn't seemed right from the very start, but even though he warned Jake, the man had been stubborn. He fingered the phone, thinking of sending a text to Jake, asking him how his day had been. No, there was no way there'd be reception out in the middle of nowhere, he'd just be wasting time.

It was a shame that this doctor hadn't given Tim a phone number. He would have liked to keep in contact with his friend, to make sure everything was fine. No, he was worrying far too much. This was real life, not some horror movie. He doubted serial killers would find their victims through goods and services sites. It would be too easy to track them down. Maybe this was a stupid serial killer? Couldn't be much of a serial killer then... He laughed dryly and pocketed his phone, picking up the book he had been trying to read and becoming absorbed in the words.
