Plot



The world has been slowly dying for centuries, but not as humans think. Long ago, at the dawn of the age of science, mortals suddenly began to stop acknowledging and believing in things such as magic, preternatural energies and supernatural creatures themselves. This quickly caused even the most potent of magic to fade, power lost in the new age, the age of machine and clinical thought.

With the founding of their lives crumbling, supernatural creatures hid, blending with humans, falling into slumber or simply just dying out. No longer did the forest hum with mystery and magic, no longer did water harbor healing power, no more did the wind sing with the energies of the world, the voice of the very earth falling silent in the wake of human destruction and ignorance.

This disruption of energy slowed, perhaps even stopped the flow of Mana, the very lifeline of the planet. The effects of this tourniquet has been seen over time, slowly building up into a massing of catastrophic events- Earthquakes, wildfires, drought, floods, hurricanes, disease and mass deaths of man and beast alike becoming more and more frequent. In desperation, the earth called out, a cry of despair sent to any who were still even slightly attuned to the natural energies, but it was not enough. Too few supernaturals existed and even fewer humans could hear her. The most the planet saw was a resurgence of earth religions and mysticism.

Now, more than twenty years later, in the midst of world-wide panic and strife, she has called out again, this time reaching out to the oldest and most powerful of creatures. One by one, the earth has awoken the dragons slumbering within her, pleading to them for help.

Setting


(still a WIP)

Cradling the southern half of lake Bemidji, the city boasts a beautiful, small lake-front campus, a solid downtown shopping district made of one of a kind stores, cafes and bars, a few cozy and lush housing districts and a large fresh produce market. Various farms line the city, dotted around the expansive forests and natural parks.

Being only a week after the college year ended, the small, lush lake-side city of Bemidji is rife with activity. Summer classes are being enrolled in, festivals are being set up, the first crops are in the farmer's market and young adults embrace the warm and wild nightlife of parties, drinking and dancing.

Rules


1} Be respectful of all players.If you have any issues with any player, we would be happy to discuss it civilly and peaceably. If issues persist, we will initiate a warning system- three strikes and you're out.
2} Drakina and myself are both in charge. Our word is final, please respect that.
3} Be literate. Everyone slips up, now and then, but there is no reason for there to be errors in every post. Spell check is available in many places, please use it.
4} No one-liners. We know inspiration can be hard to find sometimes, but at least one paragraph is expected in each post and more is preferred.
5} Be reasonable and realistic with your posts and characters. While there will be magic and monsters, this is still in modern times and our characters are 99% human. They will not know spells and how to control magical gifts. This also relates to auto-hit and auto-dodge, as well as other skills and tasks. People have limits and will not do things perfectly every time.
6} Post profiles in this thread, with a ping for both Drakina and I. Profiles and any changes, if necessary, will be discussed here.
7} Rules are subject to change and additions as we see fit.


Character Guidelines


We are going to be a bit strict on how characters are made and defined, but are quite willing to help every step of the way. If you have any questions that are not already answered here, do not hesitate to ask!

Examples of accepted races: Mage/Wizard/Witch, Theiranthrope (Were-animals), Fae, Elementals, Elves, Drow, Merpeople/Siren, Dwarf, Gnome/Halfling, Harpy, Naga... The list is quite long. If you are unsure, just ask!

Not accepted: Fox/Cat/Dog/OMGKawaiiDesu "demons", Vampires, Hell Spawn/Demons ( only one allowed, already taken), Angels (only one allowed, already taken), Dragon (only one allowed, already taken), Full or half-bloods who "waken", Deities/Demigods.

1} Be creative! We really don't want ten werewolf bloodlines that all have a claw for an heirloom.
2} Your character is almost completely human. Thus will not have horns, animal ears, tails, claws, gills, ect. However, slight changes are allowed, such as (but certainly not limited to) slightly odd skin, hair or eye color.
3} Your character, nor any family member, knows of the supernatural bloodline. The only accepted reference is family "stories". For example, a great, great grandparent tells stories from their great, great grandparent about how their family traded goods or shared lands with elves/dwarves/werewolves/ect.
4} The heirloom must be small. This is something that is going to be carried with the character across the globe, so keep it travel friendly. It cannot be a useable weapon or tool, it is ornamental and a keepsake, and lastly, the object must have made an impact on the ancestor's life.
5} Your character's skills are limited. This goes along with being reasonable. Your character will not have in-depth knowledge of an arcane art, be a master at combat or speak ten languages. These are regular humans going to or living near a regular collage.
6} Keep skills and talents balanced. If your character is really good at something, it is one of the few things they know, as it is presumed they have spent their lives on it. If they have many talents and interests, they are not a master at any of them.
7} Combat will occur. If you want your character to have fighting skills, the will typically come from either a class or being a delinquent and getting in brawls. If the skill comes from a class, it will be refined, but your character would not know what to do in a real fight without a lot of adjusting. On the other hand, a brawler knows how to move in an actual battle, but lacks form and refinement. If you choose to have both, which will be allowed, your character has the mix of form and experience, but does not have enough practice at either to be considered proficient. In other words, they will not be able to hold their own in a fight.
8} More shall be added if needed, and once again, do not be afraid to ask questions!

Veronica Greene: The DragonX

Ancestry: The amethyst dragon who slumbers near the city. Before he'd gone into the sleep, he'd been very involved with the humans living near him, taking human form and walking amongst them. He ended up meeting and falling in love with one of the women, courting her and eventually giving her a scale he tore from his own back, shaped and wrapped with pure silver wire. She accepted the scale, and his advances, and within a few years they had twins. He participated in the lives of his descendants for a handful of generations, before retreating to his lair and falling into slumber.
Heirloom: Amethyst and silver pendant, in reality a carved scale he tore out of his own hide and wrapped in wire to gave his lover.
Appearance: Black hair falls to the bottom of her shoulder blades, usually held back in a pony tail or short braid. Her face is oval, with eyes that are a little more almond than oval, and of an unusual shade of greyed periwinkle. Her skin is medium-light, and her body is slim bit not particularly fit. She stands about 5'8" and wears cool tone tee shirts and jeans.
Skills/talents: She knows a lot about stones, gems and minerals from being a collector and from jewelry crafting classes, which also has helped her develop a steady hand for delicate work. She also has a bit of a passion for photography, which makes her drawn to peculiar and sometimes otherwise unnoticed things. Aside from her hobbies, she learned some cooking and basic sewing skills by helping her mother around the house.
Personality: Ronnie is usually focused and level headed, preferring to deal with what's in front of her rather than leave it for later. Friends and family find her loyal and helpful, willing to give aid whenever asked, and she finds herself trusting people and their word easily. She's very artistic, finding ideas and inspiration everywhere, and a bit outgoing, willing to make a new friend as long as someone she knows is around.
History: Ronnie grew up the single child of a bank manager and cafe employee in the city, with one of the state parks practically at her backyard. They never had many money issues, leading a comfortable life and taking the occasional trip around the state or nearby ones. In high school, she found her passion for jewelry making, taking all the classes for it and far exceeding her teacher's expectations. Her mother gave her the amethyst pendant at graduation, saying that it just felt right, and it was traditionally given to the first daughter, anyway. She moved into a small apartment and has a part time job, and entered the state college on an art tuition, taking metalworking and geology classes, feeling that she should know what the gems looked like both polished and in the raw. She's on her last class, and plans on starting her own business as soon as she graduates.

Ren Pentlocke: The DemonX

Name: Ren Alaric Pentlocke
Age: 24
Ancestry: Hellspawn- Summoned by a malicious mage, the demon did as the ignorant and selfish human bid, smiting his enemy and rival warlock in a powerful vengeance. However, when the pact was competed, the mage took back his word and bound the demon to the mortal plane as his slave- powers locked away and strength all but demolished. For decades the mage abused the demon, using him as a means to become the greatest warlock Europe had seen- mortals and supernaturals alike cringing in fear at the mention of him. However, indulging in such power made the mage weak over time- his arrogance causing him to lose his focus on controlling the demon, as well as his apprentice. The young apprentice, who had come to know the demon as a friend, drugged her master, and then broke the binding spell over the demon, but not wholly. While he was freed from the warlock’s control, he was still bound to the mortal plane. After damning the warlock to hell itself, the demon moved on with the apprentice, using his knowledge to compete her training. Inevitably, they fell in love and created a family. The demon outlived his wife, and a handful of generations before wasting away, the last of his power fading.
Heirloom: A grimoire, a hand-written tome of magical knowledge and spells. This plain-looking, leather bound book contains the knowledge of the Demon and the spells used by his wife, as well as knowledge added by later generations. The original text is in the now-dead runic language used by many spellcasters in the past, and has been deemed untranslatable. Later texts are in a range of languages, including Latin, Greek, French, German and English. Though continually added to, recent generations do not regard the book as actually containing magic, simply regarding it as a Book of Shadows- a Wiccan guidebook.
Impact: Once the apprentice, now a proper sorceress, discovered the life growing within her, she and the Demon took the time to write down all they knew of the arcane, as well as their story, the book meaning to serve as a guide to their children and their children’s children, as well as a memoir. It was a testament not only to their power, but their love. The demon kept it close to him for the rest of his life, passing it on only once he could no longer remain on the mortal plane.

Appearance:
He looks no different from other humans, but there is no doubt that he holds an aura that resonates with a slightly different energy than others. Whether consciously perceived or not, this tends to draw attention to him. Other than this, his distinguishing marks are a smattering of scars gained through his childhood and travels, and a few tattoos, most notably a serpentine dragon woven around a pentacle and ankh on his right shoulder and the words "Ad omne lumnis deinde noctis" on the inside of his left wrist. His clothing is a blend of "rocker" and modern punk with jeans, both ripped and new, graphic print shirts, studded belts, leather and metal accessories, slim-fit plain shirts, boots and fingerless gloves, all typically in darker, cool tones.
Skills/talents: Due to his family’s business, he is well versed in the preternatural, having grown up with in-depth tales of the lore of the supernatural and energies from beyond, and due to his mother’s intense mysticism, he has a log of information on herbs, stones, animals, languages and cultures. She also taught him how to do tarot and crystal readings, something he continues to do as part of his personal religion. Being his parent’s field agent, he also took the time to teach himself first aid, basic survival skills and how to use various electronic devices. Aside from family business, though, he has a passion for music and his talented in both writing and performing songs on the guitar/bass and piano.
Personality: Charming, charismatic, flirtatious and friendly, many people are drawn to his magnetic aura and personality, coming to trust him rather quickly and perhaps offer up more information than intended. He his generally more relaxed and mature, but holds a focused edge and a thirst for adventure and danger that is seemingly endless. A natural leader, he is usually bold and plays off his fears easily, a combination that often leads him to be the first to take the leap into the unknown. However, under all of this is a fairly well hidden depression that gives his mind a rocky foundation. It can leave him uncertain and moody at times, his sarcastic and playful words turning cynical and dry as he questions himself and those around him.

History:
Ren’s family has never been “normal”. His parents, Gregory and Olena, are a married duo of supernatural investigators and mystics, and for years have studied the preternatural and published books on a range of topics dealing with other-worldly creatures and energies. His grandfather, Hadrian “Hawthorn” Pentlocke, is a rather famous mystic who travels to study demons and exorcisms around the world. Due to all of this, is it no surprise that Ren grew up surrounded with conversations on ghosts, demons, angels and everything else that goes bump in the night or hides in secluded, uninhabited places. By the time he as a teenager, he was thoroughly immersed in the world of magic and was a devout solitary practitioner, the family heirloom grimoire becoming his own. Adding his own spells and rituals, as well as using older ones from generations before him, he believed in the magic, but had no idea he was actually using arcane skill passed down within the demonic blood that runs in his father’s side.
Now an adult, Ren has taken over his father’s place as “field agent”, the one who explores haunted and bizarre places and records data. Over the past five years he has been through over a hundred hospitals, mansions, schools, forests, caves, and many more, often risking life and limb over decaying buildings and treacherous terrain to find a ounce of truth behind the stories.



Elijah Corby: The ElvenX

Name: Elijah Silas Corby (goes by either “El” or “Sil”)
Age: 26
Ancestry: Wood elves. His ancestor was a humble blacksmith drafted into the Great War between the Elves of the light and the subterranean-dwelling Drow. She crafted the weapons needed to topple the enemy, then in the end took to arms herself when troops were needed, wielding the very steel and mithril she crafted.
Heirloom: A polished arrowhead that looks to be made of very light colored silver. Detailed, delicate engraving of a vine and thin leaves curves beautifully around one side. If it were not for the notches on the edges and a scratch on the back, no one would believe it was once an actual weapon.

Impact: At the height of the last battle, the blacksmith was struck down, her sword knocked from her hand. Drawing an arrow from the quiver at her hip, she lashed out with all her might, the small weapon killing her attacker and narrowly saving her life. Once the fires of war were quenched and she was able to go back to her previous life, she turned the arrow head into a polished, engraved pendant, a memoir of the pain and loss, as well as battles won.

Appearance: Standing at a mere 5'3", his build is lean but strong, with toned rather than built muscle and sturdy but supple limbs. Prominent cheek bones, a fine “button” nose and oval face combined with fuller lips and wide eyes give him a boyish charm that isn’t helped by his height. His skin is a lightly tanned olive that is smooth except for his hands and forearms, which are covered with a smattering of scars he gained from being too careless and curious around hot metals. His hair is a rich brown-black that falls to just below his shoulders, the sections at the temples are braided and pulled to the back of his head where they meet then hang to rest with the bulk of his hair, accompanied with two thin feathers. His eyes are a hazy mix of grey and spring green which have an odd brilliant shimmer in the sunlight. This, along with his strangely angular ears has earned him more than a few nicknames from his peers, all of them having to do with either Tolkien or Santa Claus.

His clothing is simple, supple but sturdy- jeans, cotton shirts and boots that can all stand up to his rough-and-tumble lifestyle. He always wears quite a few accessories- bandanas, scarves, belts, necklaces, earrings and the like, though only three are constant: The arrowhead pendant given to him by his father, a multicolored, woven leather bracelet with brass and lapis décor, and a simple, small but wide blue steel hoop earring in his left ear.

Skills: Smithing and working the forge take up most of his life, but he has had a few combat, fencing and archery classes through the years, learning to use the weapons he has helped create- a skill supplemented from a few rough years of street fights when he was in his late teens. He is a rather good actor, the skill coming from being part of Renaissance Faires around the US since he was a boy, and knows basic camping and wildlife survival skills due to many family outings to the country’s national parks.
Personality: Sil is headstrong and usually rather upbeat, tumbling through life in what seems to be a haphazard manner. While has a general care-free and “go with the flow” mentality, he works well under pressure, being able to think on his feet and improvise with ease. However, it’s hard for him to stay serious and focused for long, his mischievous nature and odd sense of humor being apt to shine through at any given moment. When it comes to friends and family, he is fiercely loyal and protective, not afraid to take a strike or blame for another. There are few things that anger him, but threats to his loved ones will unleash a quick and sharp counterattack.
History: For as long as they can remember, the Corby family has had ties to metal- both the mining and crafting of it. Silas’s father carries on that tradition by holding a secure and well-known business in crafting fine armor and weapons used in historic reenactment and collections, a business Silas has had a hand in since he was barely ten years old, and has yet to lose his fascination with it all. Every summer, Silas would travel with his parents around the US to different Faires and craft halls, slipping in and out from modern time to the middle ages and embracing both ways of life. Now as an adult, he has taken time away from the family business to learn how to craft smaller metal pieces and work with glass and clay, but still attends the RenFaire in Minneapolis every year.

Ancestry:In Taiga's tribe, a very long time ago, there was a witch that people would not talk with or have anything to do with because of the fear that they felt with her around. Though they went to her for illnesses when the medicine man could not do anything for the sick or dying, after a while she was soon married and had a beautiful baby girl whom she made a protection bracelet for out of her hair and a few other things like gemstones that were rare to the people. Though soon her happiness was short lived when the white men came and killed her husband in the fight, leaving her no choice but to hide her daughter away from them as she fought with her tribe before she was killed off.
Heirloom: The heirloom that she was given, was a simple bracelet made out of hair, gems and herbs. She was told that her ancestor was a special, that she had been told by the spirit world that her tribe and soon to be child was in danger of a white wave that will be coming from the sea. With this new found knowledge, she packed her teepee and went in search of magical objects. It was a long and difficult journey, traveling across the USA, meeting up with her tribe when they had traveled to the area she was in. It took her about five years to collect all the gems and herbs that she knew that she needed to make a protection charm for the child that she now carried. She was finally able to head back to her tribe, cutting her long hair until it was shoulder length. She had only five small gems that she weaved with the herbs and her hair over the months. She had mumbled a charm over it, though over the years with each new gem that was found, it was added to the bracelet, never the big ones just small ones, even a few strands of the next generation's hair had been added to, fix the weak spots.
Appearance: She has faint scars all over her body, her blue eyes are slightly brighter then most. Wears her black hair in a long french braid that reaches the small of her back, has feathers braided into her hair, stands at 5 feet 5 inches, weighs 145pds, is curvy and slightly chunky in a good way, tan.
Skills/talents: Archery is something that her grandfather taught her the moment that she could hold a bow. She may have only been five at the time, running around and trying to shot fruit but it was something fun and she was able to bond with her grandfather over it. He believed that they young in the tribe should try and keep up with the traditions of the tribe.
Animal care is something that she just picked up. She loves animals and because of that she just cared about them. Her father being a veterinarian also contributed to this part of her life. Every time he took care of an animal she would be right there with him, learning and watching his trade though not as advance as he was. She would find animals while out in the woods with her grandfather, taking the injured ones home and doctoring them up with her father.
Plant identification is another thing that she had learned but that was later in high school that she learned, i mean sure she knew enough from her childhood that her grandfather had taught her to tell the poisonous plants out of all the normal ones but she always had a craving to know more about them just like she had always had a craving to know more about taking care of animals.
Hunting is another skill that she had picked up but that was also something that she had learned more when she was in middle school. She would go with her friends almost every weekend to help them hunt during hunting season, though she learned even more tricks to hunting from her cousins when she would go and see them, though she isn't very good at it.
Singing is not something that she is good at, it is more of something that she just likes to do just like writing and drawing is something that she just likes to do, she isn't very good at that either but she still does it just because she enjoys it.
Personality: Unlike some she is not the center of attention, she would rather blend into the background, but she can hold her own when it comes down to it. She likes to keep her friends and family together, so you could say that she is the corner stone of her relationships. She easily gets jealous which tends to ruin her relationship with friends, family even her lover though she tries hard not to do so. She would never turn her back on those that she trust and cares about, she would do anything for her friends and family and what she believes in. She tends to keep how she feels to her self as much as possible, not letting anyone know how she truly feels.
History: Taiga was born in California though she was not raised there. She grew up with out a mother for her whole life, all she knew is that her mother was a Native American like her father and had given birth to her. Other then that she lived a good life, moving around the US and world depending on where her father was station. She never stayed in one spot for to long except for when her father decided she needed a stable life when she was 10 and sent her to officially live with her grandfather in Lumberton, North Carolina. Even though she had moved around a lot with her father she had still learned a lot from him just like she had learned a lot from her grandfather. After a while of going back and forth between her grandfather's and her father's home she finally graduated high school, picking her college before moving to Minnesota to attend Bemidji State University. She has no clue as to what she is going to major in but that is fine with her, after all experience everything, even things she is not good at will help her to figure out what she wants to do with her life.

Karlin Archer: The Fae kinX

Ancestry: Her ancestor was a fire fae of much renown who entertained the various courts of the time with his talent for manipulating fire in unusual ways. He could paint landscapes, create temporarily living creatures, and other such feats, all with nothing more than flickering flames.
Heirloom: A magical accident during practice with one of his friends caused the fire fae to capture a part of his earth mage friend's soul within a shapeless piece of glass. Though it might have seemed like nothing more then a lifeless lump, part rough and part smooth, and inner flame lights it depths for those who care to look. It was hung upon a silver chain, and passed down through the generations until it reached Karlin with the story that it was something precious that needed to be guarded.

Appearance: With hair the color of orange flames, Karlin's heritage doesn't very much shine through in any other aspect. She is curvaceous with bright green eyes and has a ready smile and prefers to wear corsets and jeans, with an optional jacket, and leather ankle boots, to anything else. She isn't very much one for frills, and so avoids them most of the time.
Skills/talents: Karlin can pick locks, climb just about anything, and has some skills with knives and street fighting. She grew up as an orphan on the streets with a gang of others like her, who had nowhere else to turn, and didn't care too much about it. (maybe something to do with fire, haven't decided yet)

Personality: She's flirtatious, vivacious and always up for an adventure, no matter the danger involved. Underneath it all she's caring, and very loyal to her friends, though her temper can sometimes be quick to flare.

History: Her parents were doctors who would often volunteer to travel into other countries to offer help where it was most needed. During one particular trip they were caught up in the middle of a devastating plague, somehow Karlin was spared. She has no memory of them, instead she thinks of the group of other orphans who took her in as her family. She had many brothers and sisters, who all support each other unconditionally. Marlin, the protective eldest of the group, educated everyone as best he could, and encouraged them to learn all they could. This helped them survive through thievery. Karissa, one of the frailer adoptive siblings, did her best to make sure that the group knew the differences between right and wrong. Through all of this, Karlin always kept a glass necklace she can't remember ever being without.

Eventually they all managed to get straightened out by investing much of what they'd stolen into legitimate accounts. That's how Karlin found herself in Bemidji, a lake side city that enchanted her on sight, signing up for college of all things in the hopes of making something of herself.
