Yeah, sorry, I can't help but try to remain positive for my friends! Just know we're all on your side, of course, no matter what happens.

Thanks! It's been a rough couple of weeks. I'm back from Oklahoma now. It was a pretty exhausting trip but relatively productive. I'm hoping to prioritize sleep this week and start to feel more human in a couple of days.

No worries, friend! Glad you finally have time to focus on yourself now, though. Hey, winning LotD for the grand opening might just turn your luck around altogether! Check in with yourself this week, focus on you and yours, 'k?

Woot, I look forward to it, if you are able to do so! I might be a bit sporadic as well for the next week or so; I've just been promoted so I've got lots of learnin' to do!

Lead operator of the production area. I was the assistant operator, so I knew about 75% of the job already. Then the lead operator was fired at the end of last week (due to numerous incidents of an anger/attitude problem that I was expecting to eventually catch up to him) so I've been promoted to his position. Before, if people had questions or wanted to leave towards the end of the day when there isn't much more to do, I'd tell whoever asked me to ask him. Now, I'm the go-to person if the actual manager isn't in the room. There were things he refused to teach me "for my own job security" were his exact words to me when I asked how to do something. Now that he's gone, I've been spending time with our maintenance man learning how to quick-fix things that the lead operator should know how to do; stuff we don't need maintenance to come in for.

It's only been a few days so I'm struggling a little at taking more control of the room and everyone in it - especially since his wife still works with us and she's none too keen on me taking on the leadership role her husband lost. I'm surprised she stayed, to be honest, but the manager has assured me he will be talking with her and making sure she knows that she isn't in charge - I am, and she needs to respect that. It's hard, though, since they were/are friends of mine I've known for several years, longer than we've worked together.

Wow, that sounds like a pretty tough situation to be honest. How do you feel about the promotion? Are you happy to be moving up, even if the dynamic is tricky? Or does it feel more thrust upon you?

I'm not exactly happy about how it happened, and it does seem more on me suddenly but I went through this before. The old lead operator - I'll call him D - like I said we've known each other awhile, D worked there first and helped me get a part time job there. Then, the old assistant operator quit, so D said I know her, I'll train her to be my assistant. Within three months of being a part time worker I was suddenly a full time assistant operator - which I've done for three years now.

So, I'm more competent at this job given the years of experience, but adjusting to the dynamic of being the actual lead instead of the second that I've been will take some getting used to. I know what to do, what needs to be done, but I'm not very good at delegating positions because that wasn't my job before this.

Thanks for letting me rant about it, nonetheless

Yeah, I've been on the receiving end of some of these "promotions" that you didn't ask for and don't get a raise for. I felt like it was very surprise sprung on me against my will, and that can be very hard. Especially if you don't feel ready. I'm not sure if you like reading but I've seen some books out there. I have one, Leadership 2.0, that I've been meaning to read. I'm not sure if it's any good but it seems pretty short and well structured so we'll see.

I haven't done professional reading for leadership advice, but my family and friends have been a very good support system. Upper management have been great at communicating with me on what they need and helping by uplifting other's attitudes despite the sudden change of leadership in our environment. We're striving to train someone to "replace" me, to become my assistant so I can officially be the lead.

Anyway, how's your job going? I guess I don't really know what you do, to be honest You've probably mentioned it already but I forgot.

Ooh, that's great that management has your back, that does make things a lot easier.

Things are ramping up at work because our biggest conference of the year is coming up in May and there's a lot to prepare. My official title is Digital Engagement & Marketing Specialist but basically I do marcoms (marketing communications). So like planning all of our social media and email calendars, writing posts and email newsletters, creating graphics, etc.
