Nicolas ran through the crowd, dodging around people, sliding around luggage, leaping over plumes of steam that shot out, trying everything he could not to slow down. His reddish brown hair flopped in his face as he ran, the goggles on top the only things keeping it in place. The strap to them had tiny metal gears locked into place and the one side could extend out, giving it a spyglass look. He could hear the shouts of the station police as they chased after him. He grinned, knowing that he was at least a couple of feet in front of them. Nic held on to his bag very tightly, what was inside being the whole reason for this chase through the beautiful train station.

This station had been here the longest out of any of the train stations that dotted the world. It had hidden marvels and secret passageways for the people who knew about them. Wrought iron stairs could be seen everywhere, with people constantly on them. There was a beautiful clock that hung down the in the main hall when you first came into the train station. It had bronze metal gears that overlapped each other, creating more than a clock, but a work of beautiful art and steam could be seen coming out of the sides of it when the dials turned to another hour. There were also shops scattered throughout the train station. Anything from food to clothing to parts for various objects could be found here. Nic knew his way around this place very well, since this was where he made his home from time to time. He was always on the move however, and didn't stay in one place for very long before hopping onto a train and moving on.

He sped up as he heard the commotion behind him growing louder and louder. Well this is as good as any time for moving on, he thought to himself as he spotted a train just starting to pull out of the station. Looking back over his shoulder for just a moment, his eyes widened as he realized just how close his pursuers were. Putting on a burst of speed, he gathered his legs together and leaped for the back railing of the very last car on the train. He barely made it and had to hold on for dear life as the train picked up speed. Finding his balance he merely smiled at the red faced policemen as they angrily shook their fists at him as he made his getaway.

Waiting until he was sure the station was out of sight, he quickly climbed on top of the train and started to make his way down each one, peering into the cars for signs of other people. Finally he found an unoccupied car that seemed to have hay in the bottom of it and slid down inside by the small window in the roof of the car.

Benny knew this place like the back of his hand. He'd been through this huge train station many times but had never bought a ticket. He'd never waited in line, never spoke to anyone else. He appeared to be a young man in search of his parents, his looks contradicting his age, his nineteen year old body hidden away inside what appeared to be a much younger man. He had his eye on the next train to leave, however, and was hurrying with the other men and women as he rushed toward it. But as they went to their respective cars, he broke away and breathed out, panting a little. He wanted to get to this one because it was heading west, and he hadn't been west in a long while now. Rearranging his bag on his shoulder he leapt onto the back of the train, clambering up the caboose and keeping low to the roof, carefully making his way to what looked like a hatch, and slipped in.

It looked to be a livestock car, but without the livestock. Lots of clean hay was piled around, apparently having been traded out for the dirty stuff when the train had arrived at the station. Benny sighed in relief, removing his bag from his shoulder and setting it against the wall, reaching up to undo his tie and let it hang on his neck as he shifted and formed a little nest in the hay. Benny sighed again, this time less in relief and more in hunger, and settled down, resting his back against the cool metal behind him. If only he'd have stopped to buy a little food before running to the train. He had hours of wait, now, unless he wanted to clamber out of the livestock car as the train rocketed down its tracks and make his way to a food car.

He reached up, taking his glasses off and rubbing them on his pants. They always seemed a little too big for his face, but he couldn't afford anything smaller. He was just glad his eyes didn't get worse over time. As he replaced them, pushing them up his nose, Benny gasped when a noise met his ears. An inspector? He hoped not... He shuddered, waiting for the doors to slide open but jumping and curling in on himself when someone jumped in through the hatch he had come in through just a minute ago. It was rather dark in the car, so he had no idea what this man looked like. Benny bit his lip, slipping away and a little closer to the hay bale beside him.

Nicolas braced himself for the impact of hitting the floor and was pleasantly surprised when he landed on the soft clean hay below him. It still jarred him when he landed but not as bad as it would have if the hay hadn't been there to break his fall. He stayed still for a moment, letting his eyes adjust to the darkness in the train car. It seemed his luck had started to turn around as he the contents of the car came more into focus. Lots and lots of hay was stacked up everywhere around him. He was very glad that this way fresh hay and not the foul stuff that tended to be in these cars. They didn't really change the hay out very often and it was usually left to rot away if not used frequently.

With his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he stood up and brushed himself off. He was just about to start walking around when he heard a noise to the right of him. Nic froze and very slowly started to look over to where the noise had come from. It was very hard to make out anything in the dark, no matter how much he had gotten used to it. It was then that he noticed a small dark bundle over by the large hay bale and was shocked when he saw the glint of eyes that shone out at him from the light that came in from overhead. Instantly on guard he crouched down and began to make his way over towards whatever was lurking over there.

He had forgotten about his bag and cried out in dismay when the small animal that had been closed up inside of it jumped out and ran towards the dark shape. "Lira, no! You'll get hurt!" He threw all caution to the wind and chased after the animal, right towards whatever was over in the corner.

Benny had clasped his hands over his head and tried to make himself as small as possible. It was reminiscent of his time in that little orphanage, when he had made himself small to avoid the bigger kids, the bullies and the nuns that always had a reason to smack him with a paddle or switch. They always had a reason, and they had always found him to take out that reason. The bullies, on the other hand, were tipped off by other children who were trying to earn points in the bigger kids' books, telling them where sweet, girly little Benny was hiding, ready for a new lesson in 'how to be a boy'. But his eyes went wide when he saw the newcomer tense as his guard went up. Of course he'd been seen, and now... what? Was he going to be attacked? Tossed out? He'd been here first but who really cared when it was a free trip? Few liked to share their free ride, after all. It was too risky. Numbers always got noticed. Singles were easy to hide.

He gasped when something came flying at him, and in a panic he dove away, struggling out of his bag an knocking the glasses right off his face as he scrabbled across the shorter end of the car, huddling under the hay he kicked up as he did so. He was here first and that strange little... dog? Cat? It had alerted its owner of Benny's presence and now he risked being scared off, hurt, killed. He had no idea who this guy was, he could have a gun, a knife. Benny had nothing, he didn't fight, he was too weak to fight. Gritting his teeth, Benny tried and no doubt failed to hide himself in the corner, feeling very much like a caged animal with no way to fight back but teeth and claws, neither of which were particularly deadly, and neither of which he would actually use. He wasn't the violent type, never had been. He shivered.

Nic was frantic. He wouldn't stand for anything to happen to Lira. Of course the little fox had jumped out of the bag at the worst possible moment. What if whatever was over there was dangerous? "Lira!." he hissed out. You could imagine his surprise when the shadow he had seen bolted away from them. He stopped chasing Lira and paused, reassessing the situation. Whatever was over there seemed to be more afraid of them than they were of it.

It was a good thing he had stopped, because laying in the floor were a pair of glasses. He had almost crushed them. With the absence of fear, he let Lira do what she wanted. She wasn't going to hurt whoever was over there. He was assuming it was a person and not some other strange creature upon the discovery of the glasses in the floor. Nic bent down and picked them up, making sure they weren't damaged and started over towards where Lira had gone. When he got close enough to make out anything in the dark he laughed out loud, a musical sweet sound. Lira had jumped up on the boy's lap that he found and was licking his face.

The scattered hay that had been shaken loose of the bales when they were hauled inside didn't exactly do much to keep him hidden. That was especially true when it came to the mystery animal's strong nose and quick paws as it sought Benny out and did its best to keep him still. Then the stranger's words actually connected. Lira? That was the animal's name, but it didn't do much to tell him what it was, specifically. It wouldn't stop licking his face and Benny couldn't bring himself to push it away; he gave in, falling over and wriggling his hands under its squirmy little body, pulling it off his chest and wriggling to his feet so he could get a good look at the newcomer. Or as good a look as he could---he had to squint to make anything definite out.

"S-sorry if I startled you..." He looked down, giving his eyes a break. They couldn't make anything come to focus, especially in the dark, and especially with the guy framed in the light coming down from the hatch behind him. "I didn't think anyone else would... y'know, do this." He turned away to pick up his bag. It had all his worldly possessions and he didn't exactly want to lose it. Or leave it where someone else could grab it. "Um... glasses..." He felt around the floor, digging his hands in the hay for the huge plastic-framed things.

Still laughing, Nic reached down and patted Lira on the head between her enormous ears. "Ok girl, that's enough. He still needs his face you know." He didn't remove her from the boy's lap as she seemed to be quite comfortable there. The cute fox looked back at him once and yipped at him before settling down in the boy's lap. Nic shook his head. That fox got him into some odd situations some times.

"Oh! Here, I found them in the floor. Good thing I was looking where I was going or I would have stepped on them!" He bent down, out of the light, and handed the boy his glasses. As he got out of the light, some of it fell onto the boy in front of him and Nic froze. This guy...was beautiful. The way his hair seemed to fall in his face while he was searching for his glasses just made him all the cuter. What are you doing! Stop staring Nic, he's going to think your a creeper...

"I wasn't expecting anyone else to be in here either. I'm sorry I startled you. My name is Nicolas but you can call me Nic. What's yours?" Unable to stay still for very long when not being pursued by angry people he bounced just a bit as he crouched there on the balls of his feet.

Benny sighed in relief and took the offered glasses, sitting back on his legs and untucking his shirt from his pants to clean them. "Thanks... I'm completely blind without these things..." He slid them back on his face, pushing them up his nose and blinking to readjust his eyes. "I'd be bumping into walls all the time if these got broke." He grimaced at the thought, of seeing the world as if through a badly filtered camera, every turn of his head a different and ever-changing blurry photograph. The idea gave him a headache.

He slid onto his backside, placing his bag at his side and folding his legs underneath him. "I'm Benny... Or Ben, whatever you like. Um... I kind of... jump onto trains, make a habit of it, to get from place to place. It's not exactly legal, I know..." He smiled faintly and laughed nervously. Nic, as he called himself, was standing a bit above him, but aside from that had a rather commanding aura. Something Benny definitely didn't have. Not outwardly, at least. He turned his head to the little animal---it looked like a fox. Lira, its name. He would have to remember that. Lira. A nice name. Simple, like Nic's. "I guess you do it too, though..." He added thoughtfully, nervously smoothing his hair down. He'd never traveled with anyone else---what did people talk about when they did?

Nic smiled and sat down a little closer to Benny so that he wouldn't have to keep looking up and squinting from the faint light that was behind him. He laughed a bit at the "legal" part. "Oh yes, I definitely know it's not 'legal'. Then again, what's someone to do when they don't have a home to call their own or family for that matter. Of course, even if I did have those things, I'd be up for this. The places you get to see!" He tended to get a little carried away when he talked sometimes. It wasn't very often that he got to talk with anyone about his adventures, as he liked to call them. As of such, he got a little closer to Benny as he talked, unaware that he was doing so.

Nic looked down at the orange fox that seemed to have fallen asleep in Benny's lap. "It looks like she likes you. Funny...she doesn't usually take to people like that. You must be something special. That's Lira, she's been my companion for a while now. It gets a little lonely traveling alone." He was still unaware that he was close enough to Benny to lean against. The light caught his eyes for a moment, making them shine and showing the unusual light purple color that they were.

Benny nodded in agreement. Nic was right, really. Right in more ways than he probably understood at that moment. Benny only traveled because he didn't have anywhere else to go, no one else to stop him. He didn't have anything tethering him to a specific place and was too afraid to forge a relationship that might ground him. He couldn't stop train-hopping. It was what he did. It was how he existed. He looked toward Nic as his hand absently stroked the little furry body in his lap. Normally he was afraid of animals---even small ones like this. But she seemed sweet. Docile, even, at the moment.

He glanced up, pushing up his glasses as they slid down his nose. "Yeah... lonely." He hadn't really thought of that until Nic brought it up. He looked around, measuring the distance between them. It wasn't much. And it was odd. It had been quite a while since he'd let anyone near him physically. When he caught Nic's eye, Benny opened his mouth to speak but couldn't quite find the words he wanted. Maybe he didn't like having his personal appearance pointed out. He bit his lip and turned his eyes down to the little orange body on his lap.

"Well it looks as though we're going to be companions for the rest of this train ride at least, so we don't have to worry about being lonely right?" He smiled warmly at the boy beside him. It was then that he realized just how close they were. His eyes widened a bit but when Benny didn't move away, he relaxed. He watched as Benny acted as though he was going to say something and then decided not to. When he saw him bit his lip he couldn't help but grin. He was just so cute when he did that. Stop it! He's going to notice you staring in a minute and then you're going to be in some trouble.

"Well would you look at that. Lira must really like you." The small orange fox had fallen asleep on Benny's lap. Looking around, Nic saw the scattered hay and leaned over to grab some of it up. He began making a small nest, big enough that Lira could be comfortable and let Benny move around if he needed to. "Here let me move her over here so she's not in the way." Nic gently scooped Lira up and placed her in the nest. She shifted a bit and then went right back to sleep.
