Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to find a movie that will scare me. But there are some stipulations here.
First off, I want real horror. Not jump-scares and fear just from tension. I want the thing (monster, killer, whatever) to be actually scary on its own.
Secondly, good writing and good acting. Smart plot (not the "omg insane ppl/kids/ded ppl r skurry" sort of throwaway crap), good dialogue, good acting. I dig psychological horrors, though your suggestion doesn't have to be one.
I'm absolutely fine with gore, but only if it's actually relevant to the plot. No gore porn. Gore like on Hannibal is fine, gore like Saw is ridiculous.
I don't care whether or not it's in English or how old it is.
If, after all that, you know of a movie that suits what I'm looking for, sell me on it! Tell me a lil about it or show me a trailer or something. I don't need an essay or anything, just tell me how it fits my criteria.
Hrm, my suggestion, for what little I remember of horror flicks would be a movie called 'The Strangers'. Its scary because its based on true events. It looks like a jumper, and it is a bit, but it also works with the story line from memory.
NSFW!
Another one that isnt too bad either, is 'Insidious'. I havent seen the sequel yet, but it looked ok too. Theyre dark magic type ones if you're into that sorta thing. NSFW!
Insidious
NSFW!
Insidious: Chapter 2
Finally, probably the BEST horror film I've ever seen is Idiocracy. Its scary as hell because ITS REAL!
Theres also one other film, japanese or korean im not sure, thats similar to 'Mirror Mirror' I think? The American version of that that I found was pretty piss poor, but if I ever find the version I saw, I'll let you know what it was actually called since I dont know what it was called and havent found it again.

I think that's the theme I'm getting from this thread! I'm glad at least some countries figured out that there's more to horror than jump scares and blood. Makes sense, since my favorite horror-things, the Silent Hill games, are Japanese. And then of course the American movie adaptations messed it all up. Even when American moviemakers have a clear blueprint for good horror in front of them, they just... screw it up.
You could try Hard Candy! It's only got three actors, but I think it's really good. It has Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson as the two main characters. Here, I've brought you a trailer. :P
Hey, I never said it couldn't be paranormal. It can be supernatural. Hell, it can be normalnatural. That is to say, 100% humans, no fictitious creatures involved.
