What Lies Within

James Carrington College dates back to the 18th century. Due to this it has a long and mysterious past. The college in nestled in the quiet hills of West Virginia at a small town named Rosewood. The West Virginia mountain and hill lands have always been blanketed with mystery and bizarre happenings. So colleges like this one are known for keeping things that happen there from the eyes of the public. For the past 100 years there have been rumors that several of the buildings on campus are haunted. The oldest building that is rumored to be haunted is Wise Hall which is the Art departments building, second oldest is Suter Hall which houses the Technology department and the third building is Klein Hall, which is the Auditorium and also is the newest building on campus other then two of the dorms. Wise Hall was built in 1804 and has always been the art departments building. In 1868 Suter Hall was erected and originally was for the English department, but since has become the Technology departments building. Klein Hall, built in 1913, was built and dedicated it the theater professor at the time by his family. He didn’t want the building to be named after him.

***More of the history of the college will be revealed within the rp itself. Once pieces of the puzzle are revealed I’ll add them to the third post so if we need to reference to something we won’t have to go digging through a ton of pages to find it. ***

Present Day

It’s a new school year at James Carrington College and the rumors of the haunting have spread to the freshmen class. A group of friends, who have an interest in the paranormal, have decided to investigate the stories that have been going around for a century. They didn’t really expect to find much of anything. When they played back the recording from their first investigation they were in for the surprise of their lives for there is something sinister lurking in Klein Hall.

Stormy Alexis Reinhardt
Age: 17
Type: Student
Year: Freshmen, 1
Major/Department/Alignment: Game Art and Design
Bio: Stormy has always been an outcast no matter what. It was something she could never understand and stopped trying to after a while. During her senior year of high school she didn’t know if she should laugh or what when a girl that she had been going to school with almost her entire life told her “I never knew you were so nice.” This caused her to wonder again if maybe what one of her ex-friends had said was true. When she thinks about this it bothers her since if it was then maybe she didn’t know herself as well as she once thought she did.

She has always had an interest in the paranormal due to being sensitive to it. So she often hears and feels things. Sometimes she also sees them, but that is very rare. Of course when choosing a college to go to she wanted to somewhat be close to home since her grandparents weren’t well. She also wanted to choose a school that had what she wanted to major in. The fact that James Carrington College also was suppose to be haunted was just an added bonus for her when she applied to the school.

Appearance:

Other: Stormy can be moody at times and is very shy until she gets to know someone. She enjoys music, art, reading, writing, larp (live action role play), anime, hiking and a few other things. She hates lies and people that break promises. Sometimes she can be too honest for her own good.

Nathanial Scott Williams
Age:
19
Type:
Student
Year:
Freshman, 1
Major/Department/Alignment:
Theology Major, History Minor
Bio:
Mythology has always interested Nathanial since he was younger. While in high school one of his history teachers broke the rules and talked about the different major religions of the world and how they related to each other. After that moment he knew exactly what he wanted to do. He wanted to study the different religions, mythologies and how they related to history as well as to each other. When others see him he normally has his nose stuck in a book. Ever since he was young people thought he was weird and kept their distance, so he doesn't always know how to socialize. Recently the paranormal has sparked his interest since it relates to what he's studying.
Appearance:

Other:
He has a fear of dogs because of an accident when he was 5.

Dr. Robert Lewis Klein

Age: 141, died at age 73
Type: Spirit
Major/Department/Alignment: Evil
Bio: Robert at one time was the head of the theater department at James Carrington College. Klein Hall was built in honor of him by his family and the college. He was against the idea and wasn’t able to stop it. He had a wife, Emily Douglas Klein, who died of cancer. The two of them had two daughters, Alana and Katrina, and a son, Nathanial. He remained a professor at the college until his death.
Appearance:

Other: Robert became consumed by grief and hatred after the death of his wife. He mostly roams Klein Hall and is what would be considered an intelligent spirit. More about his past will be revealed throughout the story.

Elizabeth Lennette Maddox
Age: died at age 8
Type: Spirit
Major/Department/Alignment: Good
Bio: Elizabeth or Beth as most people called her was the daughter of Alana Klein Maddox and Josphe Maddox and granddaughter of Robert Klein. Her life was cut short by a tragic accident that claimed her and her family. She grew up on the college campus.
Appearance:

Other: Elizabeth likes to play games on the students and teachers. She also seems to try to protect people from something.

Aysel Marie Denklin

Character Name: Aysel Marie Denklin
Age: 18
Type: Student
Year: Freshman; 1st
Major/Department/Alignment: Drama/Acting Major
Bio: Aysel Marie Denklin isn’t your average college student. She’s not a big time partier, she has major goals, and she actually tries to maintain her grades. Fresh out of high school, Aysel decided to attend James Carrington College against her mother and step father’s wishes to attend Columbia or Harvard, both of which she was accepted to. Acting has always been her passion and even though her parents strongly disapprove, she plans to make it her life, much like it already is. Her father died when she was 6, and he was the only one out of her family who encouraged her dreams. He was a soldier and she wears her dog tags around her neck every day. However, Aysel does know how to cut loose. She’s extremely daring, carefree, and open minded. She has a tendency to get carried away in her imagination, and her major downfalls are her insecurities and short temper. Ever since her father died she has been intrigued by the afterlife and has yearned to know and experience more of the paranormal realm.
Appearance:
Other: She’s allergic to peanut butter and has a deathly fear of clowns.

Mitchell Travis Holiday

Character Name: Mitchell Travis Holiday
Age: 19
Type: Student
Year: Freshman; 1st
Major/Department/Alignment: Psychology Major (Criminology minor)
Bio: When the show Criminal Minds first came out, Mitchell was addicted. From the moment he saw the first episode, he wanted to be in that career field. To learn how to read people like an open book, based off the tiniest details, and he kind of liked the bad ass factor of it. Up until he started college, he lived with his terminally ill, cancer caused, mother, his father having ditched them the moment he was born. He keeps a lot of his personal life secret and disguises it by being a tad bit of a flirt, and a major jokester. His long held childhood dreams of being a criminal profiler triggered a thought of his mind of the paranormal. He believed something has to happen to the spirits of the dead. He’s seen enough pictures and read enough books to know some things aren’t dismissible, but he tries to keep a skeptic attitude.
Appearance:
Other: He has a secret phobia of spiders, and he’s also addicted to gummy worms.

Genevieve Antonia Livingston

Character Name: Genevieve (Genny) Antonia Livingston
Age: 38 when she died
Type: Ghost
Year: X
Major/Department/Alignment: Evil
Bio: Genevieve Livingston had been a troubled woman for all of her life, a short 38 years ranging from 1816 to 1854. Doubling as both a professor at James Carrington College and the sole caretaker and owner of an orphanage, Genevieve appeared the nurturing and caring professor who related to her students and, seeing as she was unable to bear children, tended to the orphans in her home as her children. But then again, Genevieve had always been a deceiving, trickster of a woman, even from her childhood. After a short psychotic fit early in her 20s that led to a short stay in a mental institution, Genevieve was never truly right in the mind. First, the anger was taken out on the foster children. When they stepped out of line or made even the most minute mistake, the disturbed woman would violently whip them. Soon after it wasn’t enough. and one by one the amount of kids dwindled down as her whippings turned to fatal beatings and torture sessions. However her victims were forgotten quickly as they were soon replaced by newcomers. She would lure students to a supposed tutor session, where she would often brutally torture them due to hallucinations where she saw them either becoming her abusive mother or crazed demons. She suffered a short death by, ironically so, tripping and falling down a flight of stairs at the college, landing on the knife she was going to use on her next student victim.
Appearance:

Jacob Nixon Gulten
Character Name: Jacob Nixon Gulten
Age: 20 when he died
Type: Ghost
Year: X
Major/Department/Alignment: Good
Bio: Jacob was a junior at the college when his life was tragically cut short. He was a star football player, there on scholarship, as well as an actor. His major was in sports medicine and it was his backup if he didn’t make it into pro football. He was rather popular, for the right reasons such as being friendly and outgoing. Halfway into his junior year, he was found floating in the school pool, though it was undetermined if he drowned accidentally or was murdered. His last physical year at the school was 1919, but he has been roaming the corridors since. Though tormented by many of the other, devilish ghosts, Jacob is a light spirit and tries to watch over the members of the college as best he can.
Appearance:
Other: Jacob can often be seen standing at the football field in a rather sad manner or sitting in the Arts department and watching plays the students rehearse.

The past week had been hot and muggy now the weather was the opposite cold and wet. The rain was a welcome sight since the summer had been very dry. The forecast called for severe thunderstorms and high winds which came along with a tornado watch. Just like the weather man had said on the TV earlier this morning the wind was howling outside and the sky was growing darker. Stormy left out a sigh. Maybe it’ll hold off until after I get to class. Days like this made one not want to go to class, but stay in where it was warm and dry. She didn’t want to miss any of her classes, especially since they have only been in them for two weeks. On the brighter side she loved thunderstorms. The lightening was beautiful yet frightening. It also made a great challenge for her photography skills. This afternoon and evening was going to be a good one for getting the photos she needed for her digital media class. Sometimes Stormy thought her main professor was a nut because of all the photographs he wanted them to take for their assignments. She chuckled slightly to herself as she peered out of the window near her desk in one of the art department’s computer labs. The professor glanced at her, but before he could say anything another student had came up to him asking a question before class was over. After answering the question the professor releasing the class, “Be careful everyone. The weather is getting worse and there is still a tornado watch in effect for the area. Have a good afternoon and see you again on Monday.” Stormy quickly gathered her things. She had a two hour break before her next class so she had plans to meet with a new friend for lunch.

Though it had only been two weeks of classes, Aysel's advanced acting and drama art class had kicked it into full gear. They had already indulged into the play The Drowsy Chaperone, in which the college freshman had landed a surprising lead role as the drowsy chaperone, a drunken woman supposed to watch over the bride before her wedding. The whole class could hear the wind and distant thunder even through the building walls, but they tried to stay in focus. The junior playing Aldolpho, the man supposed to seduce the bride but really seduces Aysel's character, the chaperone, stepped up to her. Aysel took a deep breath and belted out. "You are Aldooolphooooooooooooo!" in a clear singing voice. Her counter part finished his verse of the song and both reclined onto the sofa, Aysel's fire red hair hanging over the edge a bit, which was wheeled out by back stage members.

Hearing the music stop and the director begin clapping, Aysel let the junior, Mike, help her up and they stepped back out on stage. "Amazing! Ah! Class is over! Change out and you are free to go! Good job, Aysel. Work on the accent Mike," the director called out quickly. Aysel stepped into the actual class room and into the dressing room, changing out of the 1920s flapper dress she wore. Her lips were still bright red, they had to be because otherwise the stage lights would wash out any color, but the color suited her and she decided to just let it stay.

Humming part of her solo song from the play, As We Stumble Along, Aysel grabbed her messenger bag and slipped on the loose, purple knit hat that rested on the top of her forehead and slouched down. She was wearing black and white checkered pants and knee high, soft black boots that accented her long legs, along with a knit short sleeved but slouchy black top. Checking her neon purple wrist watch, Aysel saw she had two hours to kill and decided to stop at one of the campus cafes for a Frappucino. Her large gray blue eyes flickered as she fast walked out of the art department, her waves of hair bouncing in a confident manner.

With his eyes flitting over the white board, Mitchell glanced at the writing. His professor had written mini clues on the board, and Mitchell was supposed to build a profile of a person based off of them. "It says he arranged all the books in order. He's most likely OCD, probably having had a short stay in some kind of mental institute," Mitchell spoke, his velvety voice rolling out. As he was about to say more, his professor cut in. "Fantastic. Now, it's starting to storm outside so you all stay safe and try to keep in as much as possible," the teacher said, dismissing the class shortly after.

Brushing a lock of brown hair out of in front of his eyes, the nineteen year old stepped out of the psychology wing and into the quickly chilling air. Sighing, he glanced at the sky. He had hoped to go for a swim in the near by lake, but it wasn't looking like that now. Maybe he'd go at night if it had calmed down.

Like a lot of the other college members, he had a two hour break before classes. Pulling on his navy blue hoodie, zipping it about 3/4 of the way, Mitchell felt the crunch of leaves as he walked forwards. Slipping in his ear buds and turning the music up on his iPod, he bobbed his head and continued his steady path, oblivious to most everyone around him.

Nathanial stood leaning back against one of the pillars in the lounge area outside of the Rose Garden Café in Allegany Hall. Letting out a yawn he looked at his watch. The weather had him a little on edge, this kind of weather always did. He was getting bored, so he pulled out a book on urban legends and myths he recently purchased. Flipping through the pages he finally arrived at the story he had left off on. It was one about a place in Virginia called Natural Bridge. As he stood there reading he could hear some of the other students that passed by making comments about him being weird and the like. He ignored them and continued to read.

Stormy ducked out one of the side doors of Wise Hall and walked slowly towards Allegany Hall where the Rose Garden Café was. It had started to lightly rain, but the wind hadn’t died down any. The cool rain felt good on her skin. A smile slipped onto her lips as she walked. This would be perfect if the wind was blowing so hard and if it was around or after dusk. Her mind slipped into her own little world, but only for a moment before she was brought back to reality by a loud clap of thunder, which caused her to jump. She cursed slightly under breath when she heard the two boys that were walking behind her laughing. Annoyed she started walking faster, the sooner she got to where she was going the better. It was a ten minute walk to Allegany Hall from Wise Hall and by the time she reached the hall she was halfway soaked. After entering the building she shivered due to the sudden change in temperature. Looking around she wondered where Nathanial would be waiting for her at.

Elizabeth stood on a bench by a window and watched the rain outside. She hated this kind of weather because it seemed to make the evil spirits around the campus stronger. Hearing the students being let out of the classes she giggled and skipped off the cause some mischief.

Aysel shivered as the wind blew around her, whipping her fiery waves of hair this way and that. Though her knit, short sleeved, slouchy top wasn't thin, her arms were still completely bare. Cursing as rain began to hit her arms and drench her hair, thank God she hadn't done anything to it today, she ran a bit faster, not caring that her boots were sloshing up mud.

A cold Frappe no longer sounded appealing, and she just wanted some hot chocolate. It was one of her few addictions, and it sounded so appealing with this weather. A frown befell her face as she jogged to the Cafe' just ahead of her. She loved the rain, and storms, but at the moment she just wasn't in the mood. She was getting soaked and really didn't want to change today. Knowing what this kind of weather brought, she expected a power outage probably starting during the day and lasting until the next morning.

Her only thought was to reach the Cafe' and get a warming drink. Thanks to her often working at the Cafe', she got discounts on the drinks. Living like almost all college students, she survived on mostly Ramen and caffeine. Finally she reached the outside lounge of the little coffee shop, a small, thankful smile tugging at her lips. However, she was still oblivious to almost everything else and collided with someone holding a book as the leaned against a pillar.

"Shoot, I'm sorry. I should have paid attention," she apologized, mentally smacking herself. She reached down to pick up the discarded book and grinned at the title; it was about urban legends and things of that nature.

Lounging in the coffee shop, sitting atop a bar stool at the counter, Mitchell watched the weather outside. His hands gripped a hot cup of coffee, sweetened with caramel and sugar. Plain coffee was too bitter for him anyhow. The door opened and a semi familiar girl stepped into the Cafe' appearing to look for someone. She was almost completely drenched and was shivering. Feeling bad for her, Mitchell ordered a Smores flavored Cappuccino for her.

Walking up to the brunette, Mitchell gently tapped her on the shoulder, holding both of their drinks. "Here, you look like you need this," he offered and grinned at her. "I'm Mitchell, I think we have a graphics design class together," he introduced himself. He had taken the class as a freebie, but it was actually kind of interesting.

"The weather's insane," he commented, hoping to make conversation. He watched as his high school friend, Aysel, stumbled and fell into someone. Snickering, he shook his head and rubbed his chin with one hand, taking a sip of his coffee afterwords.

Standing at the edge of the football field, Jacob Gulten watched the college football team have drills, even in the stormy weather. he missed those days when he was the star quarter back, powering through the roughest conditions as he aimed to improve his game. Looking up at a nearby wing, he frowned as a dark shadow passed over a window. He should have known the depressing weather would bring out the darker spirits. As the school bells rang, Jacob stood frozen in his spot, watching as the football players ran back to the locker rooms.

As Nathanial was reading someone bumped into him causing him to stumble slightly and drop his book. “It’s alright, no harm done.” He said quietly, looking at the girl who had bumped into him. She looked familiar, but he couldn’t quiet place her. Hesitantly he asked, “We have a history class together right?” His head tilted slightly at the grin she had on her face.

Stormy looked up surprised at the guy how tapped her shoulder and offered her a drink. “Oh, ummm…thank you.” She took the drink his hand, the warmth of the cappuccino felt good in her cold hands. After a moment she regained her composure. “I think you’re right. The name is Stormy…which fits the weather right now,” she joked lightly, letting a soft giggle escape her lips.

She followed his gaze to see he was looking at a red headed girl and her friend Nathanial. “The weather seems to be really unstable lately. I don’t mind this kind of weather usually, but with how unpredictable it is right now, I'm not sure I like it.” Raising the cup to her lips she blew on it tentatively. Normally she won’t accept a drink from a stranger, but she didn’t feel anything bad coming from Mitchell.

Laughing to herself, Aysel took in his familiar features. "Yeah, with Mr. Brooks," she said with a nod, a gentle smile warming up her face. She glanced up as water leaked from the Cafe's outside lounge roof cover. A drop landed on her head and she instinctively touched it, running her hands through her drenched locks.

Clearing her throat, she noticed him looking at her as she grinned. "Sorry, I was just looking at your book," she said, handing him his book, not having realized she was still holding onto it from when she picked it up. "Oh, I'm Aysel," the redhead introduced herself, chuckling at her own forgetfulness. She shivered a bit in the cold, the wind and rain picking up like never before.

He laughed at her joke, looking at her and then back out to the campus of the college. "That is fitting," he agreed still smiling. His coffee warmed his insides and spread through his finger tips, and he was thankful for the warmth the small cup brought. "I love the rain, and storms," he stated, his eyebrows furrowing as he stared outside. "But this is a little much," he commented, flipping his dark brown hair out of his face. Mitchell was a pretty friendly guy, especially when it came to girls. He had an open nature and a carefree manner that was contagious.

Taking his book back Nathanial smiled awkwardly. “Are you interested in that kind of stuff? Oh, the name’s Nathanial by the way.” He glanced when he heard the wind picking up. The sound was almost unnerving to him. Seeing Aysel shiver he felt bad, but wasn’t sure it would be appropriate to off her his coat or to buy her a drink in the café. While considering which he should do he shoved his book back into his messenger bag.

“Umm, would you like to join me for a warm drink at the café?” It wasn’t until after he had spoken that he remembered he was meeting with Stormy. His face slightly flushed as he panicked a little. “Well, that is…I’m meeting a friend here, but they haven’t gotten here yet. So umm…it would only be while I waited..err…that’s not what I meant to say.” He sighed, getting flustered. He was never good with things like this.

“Agreed,” Stormy said, still smiling. Lowering her gaze so that she was staring into the cup she held she started wondering why she wasn’t feeling as nervous as she usually did around people she didn’t know. After a moment she just shrugged off the thoughts, marking it up as the fact she’d almost always been more comfortable around boys than girls. That probably had to do with the fact that all her life she was much closer to her father than her mother. Looking back up she debated if she should go save Nathanial or stay where she was, finally choosing the ladder of the two choices. “So you like digital art?”

"Yeah, a little. Actually a lot," Aysel answered and smiled. "Hi," she said simply, not minding the odd but interesting introduction. A twinge of uneasiness spread through her as the storm continued and continued to increase in fierceness. She saw college students running to buildings and dorms, trying to escape the grisly weather.

"Sure, that would be great," the redhead answered and grinned, standing on her toes for a minute. She had a bad habit of not being able to sit still, at any time. She laughed at his awkward sentence. "Hey, calm down. We'll drink until you meet up with your friend. It's fine. A friend is supposed to be meeting me too," she reassured him and laughed. The boy seemed a little awkward, but Aysel thought it was kind of c
ute.

"Yeah, you could say that," Mitchell responded to her question. "It's not my biggest hobby, but it's something fun to pass the time," he said. Suddenly, he was curious as to what her major was. "Is digital art your major or...?" The dark haired college student trailed off to let the girl finish. He vaguely watched Aysel talk to the other boy, and took note of how she was constantly grinning. He'd be sure to tease her later, as he always did.

Nathanial tried to relax since what he had asked and meant had been understood. “Sorry…I’m not very good with conversations when I first meet someone.” As he spoke he scratched the back of his head with his free hand and gave her an awkward smile. After a few moments of silence he shoved his book into his bag. “Umm, let’s go on in and get something to drink so we can warm up. The weather is awful today.” In a way he wished that Stormy would hurry up and get there, but in another he was glad she was late. It wasn’t every day you met someone who was interested in the paranormal and the like.

Stormy nodded slightly. “Sort of, I’m a game art and design major. So, digital art is a big part of that.” A loud crack of thunder reverberated through the buildings on the campus when lightning struck a tree in the nearby woods. This also caused the buildings to shake. She jumped, wincing slightly and almost slipping her drink all over herself and Mitchell. Deciding it would be best to sit her drink on the nearby table. “I hate thunder. It’s so loud and it hurts my ears.” She was shivering slightly, but not because she was scared, but because loud sounds always bothered her due to having sensitive hearing.
