Tabitha drove north along Highway 5. She was just north of Vancouver and desperately wishing she had waited until morning to leave town. Now she would have to keep going, sleep on the road, or settle for some small town that might not have a room. Sighing, she pulled over and got out a well-used road atlas. Flipping to Washington state, she checked along her route for the next town. Some place called Woodland. Hmmm. That might work. There was even a handy river if she felt like working out. Under the pretense of early morning Tai Chi, she often would work out by a river bank. Her abilities to manipulate water had grown immensely since her parents' death. It was all she had that she considered her own. Her education and fortune were her parents, and they were dead. So she found subtle ways to exercise those abilities without others noticing. It felt even better if she could quietly help someone in the process. Rain to a drought area. A lost toy in the river suddenly appearing on the bank.

She put away the map and pulled back out onto the road. It was dusk and she suddenly felt the need to call it a day. She would enjoy finding a place to stay the night, watch the next episode of NCIS, and maybe order some pizza. Pizza, that would hit the spot. She grinned and sped up a little. Nothing like a good relaxing evening. Not that she didn't have plenty of those nowadays.

The wind screamed as Renee tore down the road on her motorcycle. Moving west toward Seattle on a country road, Renee felt exhilarated. This type of road wasn’t patrolled often, nor populated so she sped way over the speed limit. The sun was setting in the distance, signaling the end of another day. She had lost track of how many days she had been on the road. Ever since the incident she had been on the run. Not from the law or her parents, but from something else. It was something that threatened to overtake and make her lose control if she didn’t run fast enough. It almost enveloped her when she was around people so she kept her distance, only going into towns and cities if she needed supplies. She would stock up on all the food she could carry and occasional parts for her transportation. Since she had her own energy source, she had adapted her motorcycle to accept it rather than needing gasoline.

As the sun disappeared, Renee spotted a tree line approaching on the horizon. Perfect, she thought as she sped up. Finding out a long time ago that is was better to avoid people whenever possible, Renee would camp out in forests, caves, or abandoned houses. Already having stocked up on food at a convenience store earlier in the day, even buying a new Sudoku book and pencil, she was all set for at least another week. She found out at this store that she was now in Washington State. Since it was known for its vast forests, she figured it would be easy to find a place to crash for the night. As night surrounded her, she felt the loneliness creep up on her as it did most nights. She tried to outrun it as she raced toward the forest.

The alarm went off, pulling her from her sleep. Pushing herself up and turning it off, Tabitha slowly got up and headed for the bathroom. Getting ready for the day, she pulled out her laptop and quickly took care of some business emails. She really needed to hire someone else to handle more of the affairs back home. Sighing, she carefully packed up and went to check out of the hotel.

She stepped outside and walked down to the river. Practicing Tai Chi, she slowly worked out her muscles and quietly her abilities. No one noticed that the river was now flowing the opposite direction. They most likely wouldn't as only the lower layers of the river were being manipulated. After her workout, she stretched again and headed back to the parking lot.

Sliding into her car, she turned back on the road and headed north. Maybe today she would stop along the coast and enjoy a beach somewhere. She shrugged off the idea. If opportunity presented itself, sure. If not, well, that was life. She turned up the radio.

In Seattle, a mad scientist was adding the final touches to his creation. It was to be another one of his puppets. Like all of his previous experiments, this one was doomed to fail as well. Just not in any way that he or anyone else could imagine. The creature stirred slightly as the scientist continued his work.

The stirring of the creature caused an underground beast's heart rate to increase and its breathing to quicken. Someday soon, it too would stir as the creature above had. For now it slept still, waiting it's own moment of glory. Dreaming of world domination.

Rising with the sun was a young girl. Though she could not see the sun. Across town from the mad scientist's lair, she was herself in a lab. Created for the sole purpose of stealing. Her first assignment was a bank... on the way to the mad scientist's lab. The tangle of wires were deactivated. The compression chamber opened. She opened her eyes.

Sunlight streamed through the trees while birds began their morning chorus. Renee awoke refreshed and renewed. She began her morning stretches to keep her muscles loose and reflexes sharp. Finishing, she cast a longing glance at the gentle brook nearby. She wished to immerse herself but she could only suppress her powers for few moments. If they were to emerge while she was in the water, it could be deadly. Jump in, jump out, she thought to herself. Afterwards, she went erasing any traces of her camp and headed out of the forest. By midmorning she pasted the last of the tree line of the forest and continued heading west. Suddenly, she noticed her motorcycle start to miss. “Oh great,” she muttered inside her helmet as she pulled over onto the roadside. Being a pretty good mechanic, she set out to find the problem. Shouldn’t be that hard to fix, she thought to herself.

“You don’t have it?!” Renee asked with exasperation. “It’s just a simple gasket for the transmission!” The mechanic sighed as explained again. “Yes, it is a very simple gasket that rarely needs replacing,” he said as he began putting his tools away. “The nearest shop to sell it is in Bellevue.” Renee began rubbing her temple. “Bellevue? Where’s that?” she asked wearily. “Less than an hour southwest of here. It’s a metro area of Seattle,” he answered over his shoulder walking away from her. Her hand froze. A metro area of Seattle? How was she going to keep her power under control?

A rising storm came in off the coast. Turning inland, Tabitha headed away from the coastal wind and pounding rain. Sure it wouldn't be a problem for her to drive in such weather. However, her brain sometimes went on overload during rainstorms. Sensing all those billions of droplets and seeing the immense amount of information they created as they were carried by wind currents or hit something. It made a mental picture a blind person could follow. However, she didn't want to be distracted by that nor the temptation to control the element. So instead she drove away from that which she should not fear. Heading towards Seattle, she pondered where she should visit. The symphony of city life would muddle and fog her senses enough for her to focus on what normal people see and felt.

Reaching Olympia, she stopped and got some lunch. Simple burger and fries, but oh so heavenly and normal. Why her parents had insisted on a "better" life when there were plenty of other joys in life to experience were beyond her. She always had a high metabolism. Junk and greasy food weren't a problem for her. She wolfed down the rest of her lunch and used wipes to clean her face and hands. Rising from the outdoor table she had been sitting at, she throw her trash into a can and headed back to her car.

Renee thought she was going to explode. Stuck on the interstate outside Bellevue due to an accident ahead, she hadn’t even entered the city and was already having trouble keeping a lid on the energy burning inside of her. All of the computers, power plants, and other electrical devices that people in the city took for granted where driving Renee nuts. To make things worse, she could hear cell phone conversations and police radios. Just as it was about to send her over the edge, she began to recite different algebra and calculus problems. Her heart slowed and her head ceased throbbing, allowing her to forcibly block the noises and impulses. All she had to do was make it through the day and then she could return to her beloved countryside.

A couple of hours later, Renee stood outside of Bank of America in downtown Bellevue. Since she was able to do odd jobs in her travels, she had substantial nest egg that she kept in savings for such times as this. I just need to withdraw the money, go get the part, and leave. I can replace the gasket myself, she thought to herself as she approached the double doors. Just as she reached for a handle, a ghost pale hand grabbed it first. Almost shoving Renee out of the way, the small hooded figure glided through the door, not even glancing her way. Renee shook her head at the rudeness of the city inhabitants.

Tabitha pulled up and parked. Getting out, she started walking down the street. She was in a suburban area outside of Seattle. She headed to the bank and just stepped inside when a voice rang out. Everyone down! Now! Without any control over herself, gravity pulled and shoved her to the floor. She resisted with every ounce of strength she had. Straining, she managed to get her head up enough to see a strange looking girl. She made a fist and pointed it at the vault. The vault door started caving in as invisible punch after invisible punch hammered into it. The girl stood there calmly, staring at the door while her gravitational powers held those inside tightly to the floor.

Moving her hand, slowly under the strain, Tabitha sent a trickle of water from a nearby tap towards the strange young person. If she could just reach her, maybe she could somehow break that insane concentration. Something had to be done.

Everyone down! Now! A Renee felt as if she weighed 500 pounds as she fell to the ground. Her muscles tried to move but couldn’t shake the iron grip. She heard metal being pounded on somewhere near. The bank vault. Renee lifted her head high enough to see a young girl with her fist pointed at the vault, something invisible pounding into it. It was the hooded figure from earlier! Unable to move anything else, Renee felt helpless. Looking around the room with her eyes only, Renee studied the situation. The security guards were as helpless as she was, being pinned the floor and unable to even lift their heads.

She then noticed another young woman about her age near the door, also glued to the ground. Her head was up and hand was moving ever so slightly. She seemed intently focused on the superpowered bandit. Then Renee noticed water moving from the water fountain nearby towards the girl. Realizing that conventional methods weren’t going to save the people in this bank, Renee began thinking of something she could do to help the water girl. Since she had never trained with her powers, she didn’t know how to fight with them. But she had to try….

Tabitha got a pool of water formed above the strange girl's head. It was hard to work and concentrate under such strain. She closed her eyes and forced as much water as possible to turn to icy blades. She opened her eyes and looked at her work. There was several large blades of ice hanging over the girl's head, many smaller needle like icicles, and a lot of water still. She severed the connection of the coming water and let the rest pool up. The blades and spikes would cause some damage. But a pool of water? That wouldn't do much.

She was contemplating options when the strange girl turned and looked back at the room. Her eyes rested on Tabitha's and narrowed. Then started to glow. Tabitha realized that this girl in front of her was a cyborg and the startled realization caused her to loss her grip. The blades, spikes and pool of water all lost their suspension and began to fall above the criminal's head.

Renee watched as the water needles formed by her counterpart fell harmlessly on the floor by the bandit’s feet. A look of horror crossed the heroine's face as the villain looked directly at the water maiden. It was all on Renee now. This realization terrified her. What was she supposed to do? Where's Batman when you need him, she grumbled to herself. An idea hit her. She released some of her control and allowed some energy to flow through her. It was difficult but not impossible. In a rush, she could sense all of the electronic devices in the room. Tuning out the smaller ones, she began searching for a powerful source near the girl that Renee could use against her. She then felt an incredible power flowing from nearby. Focusing strongly on it, she began to feel hopeful.

Suddenly, the thief turned away from the other girl and looked directly at Renee. Realization hit again: the girl was the source of the great power! Without giving the young girl anytime to react to her probing, Renee sent an energy surge flying at her. Striking the cybernetic bandit in the chest, she stepped back, sparks flying all around her. The force holding Renee was still strong but slightly weaker. She then shot another blast toward the water that the girl was now standing in, causing a scream from the would-be robber. The iron grip gone, Renee shot up to her hands and knees. Smiling at her success, she shot a glance at the water girl by the doors.

Tabitha jumped up as the cyborg stumbled backwards. Gathering up the water laying on the floor, she formed dozens of spears and crashed them into the joints of the girl. She opened her mouth but nothing came out. Tabitha walked closer, carefully slicing off cords and wires that led to movement and energy readings. Slowly, but surely, the cyborg sank down until she was completely deactivated. Sending the remaining water fragments sweeping into the bathrooms and down the floor drain, Tabitha turned and looked at the other person who had helped her. What was she? Some sort of teen titan? A person behind the counter stumbled to his feet and hit the alarm.

Tabitha ran to the other super hero and grabbed her arm. "Let's think about this later. Come on!" Dragging her outside, they ran to her car and hopped in. She quickly steered onto smaller roads that wouldn't have cameras and found a deserted alley near warehouses. Parking the car, she quickly adjusted some settings on the dashboard that changed her car to a new color. They wouldn't be tracked.

She took a deep breathe, and then looked at the person sitting next to her. Hi she said uncertaintly, the name is Tabitha.

Renee sat frozen in the car of the water maiden, who had dragged her out of the bank as the alarm sounded. She hadn’t even noticed the exterior of the car had changed or where they were stopped. Vaguely, she heard the heroine speak, “Hi, the name is Tabitha.” Her voice broke Renee out of her daze. “Renee.” She turned toward Tabitha, unsure of what else to say.

Well, that was an unusual event. I'm not used to playing heroine. You okay? Renee? asked Tabitha uncertainly. The girl looked stunned and her eyes were glazed. Tabitha wondered if she should have just left her there and ran on her own.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” Renee answered, shaky. “I’m just…” she searched for words, not wanting to reveal her weakness to this new girl. “I’m just not used to fighting,” she lied. She closed her eyes, trying to center herself. Opening them again after a few seconds, she looked at Tabitha, whose face was full of concern. “Are you ok? Seems like you’re used to things like that,” Renee asked, trying to shift the focus away from her.

Tabitha looked out the window and sighed. She wasn't exactly used to things like this, she just had to be in control of her own life for so long. There was too much information around her struggling to have the attention of her senses. She practiced meditation exercises and physical workouts just to make sure her entire self was in control. She turned back and grinned, Not really. It is just... well... how to explain. I guess you could say that I don't like losing control of things. If something unexpected happens for better or worse, I evaluate the new situation and decide a course of action. She rolled her eyes, Of course playing hero wasn't something I had contemplated ahead of time, but I adapted as quickly as I could assimulate the information. She started the car back up and started edging out of the alley, So where to? I take it you wish to be dropped off somewhere? Unless you want to go get something to eat first... all up to you. Didn't mean to kidnap you there.

“Well, I really just came into town to get a part for my motorcycle.” Renee thought for a moment. It had been a long time since she’d had hung out with someone. “We could go grab a pizza if you’d like. My treat,” she said as Tabitha drove away from the warehouses. It was a bit strange. The buzz of sounds and impulses that she had felt before the fight at the bank were gone… "Unless of course you need to be one your way, then you can just drop me off near the bank."

Not at all. I was just blowing time. Don't really have a schedule, just do my own thing. Pizza Hut sound good? She pulled onto a main street and headed downtown towards the food section. There were always plenty of fast food when you wanted them there. I'm hoping there will be a TV in there to tell a tale of our exploits. Tabitha grinned at Renee and winked.

"Cool!" Renee grinned. Finally, someone who wanted to hang out with her and didn't think she was a freak!

Taking a seat in the back, Renee looked around the crowded restaurant in amazement. Where was the anxiety? The surge of power she always felt around people? Glancing at the menu, she looked at her newfound friend. "What are you in the mood for?"

Hmmm... let's see... Tabitha pursed her lips and thought. I know! Let's get the buffet. That way we can have salad and our choice of pizza too. She winked at Renee, And that way we can get dessert. She set the menu down and waited for a waiter to come. So how did it feel? To save the day?

Nodding her head in agreement, Renee considered Tabitha's question. "Different," she replied thoughtfully. She was still trying to figure out the feeling inside of her body. The energy was throbbing but not threatening to overwhelm her. She decided to be somewhat honest with her new friend. "I'm so used to keeping my powers inside, under control. It felt exhilarating to let them out." She took a sip of her soda the waitress had brought. "What about you? Are you a superhero where you come from?"

Tabitha laughed, Oh no! I'm no hero for anyone. After getting drinks from the waiter, they headed to the buffet. She frowned in thought and slowly said, I understand wanting control. However bottling it up inside will just create pressure. You need skill which comes from experience. You should really use your powers more often. That would help you stay in control more often. Her eyes lit up at the apple dessert pizza. She quickly added that to her plate of breadsticks and salad.

Renee nodded as she watched Tabitha slip the desert pizza onto her plate. Sugar was never Renee's thing so her plate was full of salad and a plain slice of cheese pizza. As they returned to their booth, something on the TV by the bar caught her attention. "Turn it up!" yelled someone from nearby. Renee nudged Tabitha under the table to get her attention and nodded toward the TV.

"Witnesses say the young bankrobber was no ordinary robber but was able to hold everyone down to the ground with her mind. Mr. Ronson was there and had this to say." A older man appeared on the screen, still looking shaken hours later. "I couldn't move an inch or even raise my head up to look around. All I remember are the sounds of banging metal and then something shorting out. When I could finally look to see what was happening, there was some robot on the floor with water all around her!" The camera panned back to the woman reporter. "All other accounts are similar. Though no one was able to see the robbery first hand, the security cameras caught everything."

Renee's eyes grew big. Everything? She looked at Tabitha, then glanced at the door. They might have to make a run for it...

Tabitha looked at Renee and then down at her plate of food. She sighed and quietly put it down. Sliding her arm through Renee's, she slowly turned them towards the door and headed out. Looks like it would have to be take out tonight. She didn't bother to look back at the tv or those watching it so closely like it was the latest hit action movie. Pulling out her keys, she hit the unlock button.
