I'm sure it depends on how it's taught for all languages. Think, if your mom spoke spanish all the time and your dad spoke english, would you start to think of english as a male language and spanish as a female language?

I'm just thinking of some little elementary school age kids that I know.
They sort of speak "Spanglish."
Switching between English and Spanish in one sentence and they have trouble in school.
At first, I thought they were just more proficient in Spanish, but apparently they have trouble speaking to relatives that only speak Spanish...

At the same time, one of my teacher's little kids speak Hungarian and English fluently.

It must just be a matter of how the languages are presented like you said.

In New York, I think there are more people who speak Spanglish than Spanish. I'll be on the train and unable to tell whether someone is speaking Spanish or English because they seem to switch between constantly. XD

I think someone needs to learn one language first, then the next. Still while they're young, but maybe don't introduce the second language til they're five or something.

I learned Chinese first when I was kid...and spoke it only at home, then my uncle and aunt started to hang around with me a lot or vice versa and I picked English. At least I think that's how it came to be because by the time I got into Kindergarten I knew English. *blink*

I can hold a normal conversation with adults in my family who speak the language, since I normally talk to adults in Chinese. I talk in English to the non adults. xD But there are somethings I won't know. I don't know my numbers perfectly...I'd have to count up to the number to know which one I'm trying to say. And I would kinda wouldn't understand money, either, because when we say $1.50, we say one and a half, not one and fifty. XD

English, I know fluently. However, proper English is a different story. I suck at writing papers and stuff. XDD

I also tried to learn Mandarin when I was kid...but I stopped. It's all gone now. @_@ I'll know a few words and I definitely know the numbers--my mom made me count to 100 for hours on end. XD

I also can understand Cantonese but I can't speak it so well... This is because my aunt's family speaks it and my mom will speak it to other adults sometimes. Also my mother and aunt watches Chinese dramas and my aunt would sometimes make me watch with her. XDDD

Yep, I can. ^_^ Because I know the characters I can understand a bit of kanji, but they'll have different meanings from Mandarin a lot of times.

Learning ALL the characters is difficult. XDD But there's a Jewish guy at school who has an A in Chinese Honors 1 and 2, I believe he has Chinese 3 honors as well at the moment... He has goes out on his way to learn how use the grammar because supposedly there is no right or wrong way to word the sentence...or something...

Ah the internet, I just love how it works and decides to pick and chose. Rather it be a server that fails, or a slow page that doesn't load.
