Stratous Magus

Deep in the heart of Cloud Metro, the great city that sits among the clouds.....

...There lies a most prestigious school—that of Stratous Magus. Those born with super powers go there to learn how to use them and for what means—heroism, villainy, or perhaps something else entirely. What side will you choose when graduation comes? It's a choice every student must make, but the road to that answer may not be as simple as imagined. Within these ancient halls, who knows what may await the gifted youth. But the opening ceremony is about to begin so it's time to get ready. Take the first step and enter.

Rules & Links

Rules/Requirements
•Some degree of literacy is a must. Make an effort to develop your character as well as display it to the reader. One small paragraph minimum, no max. Multiple paragraphs is encouraged.
•Romance is welcome as long as it remains within tos, including rules pertaining to characters that are minors
•Stick around. Seriously!!!
•Activity: I'm liable to post every day-once a week if this is good. I will not discriminate if you cannot get on often so long as I'm aware you will be slow. I'd rather this rp last a long time than go fast and die young.
•there is a profile skeleton though don't feel restricted by it
•limit of two powers per character, ie inheriting talents from both parents, though try to keep power within a reasonable check. Powers within the same sphere that compliment each other are fine.
•no limit to amount of characters played so long as you can manage it
•if you would like to write regular humans, teachers, or other types, let me know and I'll probably accept if it can be worked in.

Facts
•Stratous Magus will be set up as a high school. Ages 14-19. It is coed.
• the school school itself is neutral.
•Cloud Metro is a world that seems always to have had heroes and villians, both have followings and are catered to in the outside world. The game is to keep things in balance not destroy one side or the other (though they may say they plan to do so). I wouldn't be surprised if there were some sort of council that oversees the supers and makes sure they do not overly disrupt the balance.
•So keep this world in mind with your character back story. Just because you were raised to a villain family does not mean the world hates you.
•though the world is advanced, it also has many of the same basics as ours. Technology such as hollograms exists, but some of the most showy stuff is also not common place and will still wow newcomers to the school. More will be shared in the rp itself.
•the world has levels of restrictions that can accessed with key cards. No one not accepted or invited into stratous magus can get there and likewise, there are areas of the city that even the most renowned hero or villain may not be able to access....

Accepted Characters

Tumaini Naja (Kat Dakuu)

SPOILERX

Name: Tumaini Naja
Age/school year: 16/1st year
Appearance:

He's slender. 5'10". His skin is bronzed and he has very little muscle tone. He has red hair that varies between bright and dark tones. The bangs are in his eyes and the layers in his hair vary between ear and chin length. Sometimes tucks it to the side. His eyes are golden and shaped more like almonds. Clothes are neutral in color and he's always quick to bundle up in even semi-cool weather.
Power: His saliva is poisonous and he can spit it or otherwise find an indirect way to poison someone. Enough of it can be lethal, but small doses create headaches, difficulty breathing, or even temporary paralysis. This also makes him immune (or perhaps highly resistant) to consuming poisons. He's not tested it to a full extent. It's also noted that his tears are poisonous.
Bio: His mother is a regular human. His father is a super villain that left his mom shortly after he was born. Though he uses his father's last name at his mother's insistence, he's never considered using it to learn who the man was/is or to find him. He enrolled in school late, stalling the previous year due to nerves.
Personality: He's gentle, but distrusting. He will avoid close ties because he doesn't think anyone wants to be his friend, or that he should offer himself up to be hurt. Though he's lonesome, he's used to it. He's prefers to be out in the sun more than anywhere else. Considers himself to be pathetic and weak.
Other: His design is based on a red spitting cobra. He is cold blooded and does not sweat or shiver. It makes him very weak to cold weather.

Tarja Järvinin (Kat Dakuu)

SPOILERX

Name: Tarja Järvinin
Age/school year: 18/4th year
Appearance:

5'11", pale, slender, but in a more muscular-fit sort of way. She has blonde hair that is straight and falls to mid-back. It is almost always tied in a neat ponytail. Her eyes are blue and her clothing style would be between peppy and jock. She shows off, but won't be unpractical and girly past wearing simple makeup and keeping her hair in order.
Power: She is a healer. She can dissipate pain and cure injuries up to a high degree without incurring injury on herself, though there is a limit to how much she can do how often before exhausting her power. She requires rest and sustenance to recover and would be at her current limit to cure life threatening injuries, especially unprepared. Illness seems to exist in a different realm so she can do little for say, cancer, besides help with the current physical ailments. She could not make the disease go away. Using her power requires touch or very close proximity.
Bio: Parents are both heroes. She's her own thing and though they've always pressured her to choose that path, especially with her healing power, she has yet to decide what she really wants to do. Otherwise, her life could be considered privileged and she's excelled at everything she has touched.
Personality: She's sour, entitled, competitive and passionate. She does everything all out--both attacking and defending. She marches to her own beat and woe to anyone who tries to tell her no. In order to get what she wants, she will lie and manipulate, but she can also be selfless and compassionate. People do matter to her, but more than anything, she hates to lose.
Other: Although she has no interest in it, she would be good at sports. Obstacle courses suit her as she can easily analyze the best techniques to use.

Rosemary Hunter (~Wild Spirit Wolf~)

SPOILERX

Appearance:

Power: Ability to communicate with animals, enhanced senses and reflexes, empathy.
Bio: Rosemary was abandoned as a baby, and taken in by a lone wolf who cared for her until she was about ten years old, at which point she was taken in by an orphanage.
Personality: Shy and quiet, Rosemary is usually nervous around people because her empathy acts up and tells her more than she ever needs to know. She is more comfortable around animals than people, and can often be found reading or daydreaming in the woods somewhere.
Other: She doesn't have full control over her powers, her empathy especially acts up at inopportune times.

Calcifer Night (~Wild Spirit Wolf)

SPOILERX

Quote:

Name: Calcifer Night
Age: 16
School year: 10th grade (sophomore)
Appearance:

Calcifer stands at about 5'9" with a slim but muscular build, messy black hair and startlingly blue eyes. He wears what amounts to a traditional Japanese school uniform, except modified to look rumpled and torn, and it's been dyed black.
Power: Nightmare Syndrome: Calcifer's ability isn't very flashy; in fact, most people can't even tell he's using it. What it breaks down to is that Calcifer can enter his target's mind, find their deepest, darkest fears, and projects them so that the person actually experiences them first hand. The target can see, hear, taste, smell and feel everything as if it were really happening, but to anyone watching it just looks like they're having some sort of fit. This ability comes with a huge price, as it can drive the target insane and even cause death if used too long. It takes quite a lot out of Calcifer to use it, and he usually ends up in bed for at least 12 hours after using it.
Bio: The child of a forbidden tryst, Cal's mother was a villain and his father a well-known hero. When he was born, his mother went into shock from blood loss and didn't live. He was delivered to his father, who tried raising the boy to be good. It may have worked, except that Calcifer woke up one night when he was ten after a terrible nightmare. When he went to his father for comfort, he saw that his nightmare had been real: He had used some terrible power and caused his father to have a heart attack and die in the middle of the night. He was sent to a boarding school after that, but he became too much trouble for them to handle and they sent him to Stratous Magus.
Personality: Calcifer is a typical jaded, bad-boy type. He seldom follows the rules and doesn't seem to care much about anyone, least of all himself. He puts himself into dangerous situations on a regular basis, gets arrested for tagging and underage drinking at least once a week, and generally frightens younger or more sensitive students with his brooding attitude. Even the most optimistic hero teachers have given up hope that he'll become a hero, but the villain teachers don't seem to have much luck swaying him, either. On the inside, Calcifer is incredibly sensitive and is hurting a lot over the things he's done. He closes himself off to avoid the pain, and his misdemeanors come from the idea that if he's going to be bad, he might as well do it right. He hasn't actually decided his alliance yet, but even he is convinced that he's most likely to become a villain.
Other: Calcifer, called Cal for short, Named his ability after the first time he used it. He remembers every victim, and often relives their fears in his own nightmares. As a result, he doesn't sleep much.

Phaedra Lucasta (Numerica)

SPOILERX

Quote:
Name: Phaedra Lucasta
Age/school year: 14 (Freshman)

Appearance: Phaedra has knee length dark red hair, which she usually wears in a coronet. She has extremely fair skin, and her face is sprinkled with freckles. She has moss green eyes. Phaedra is just short of being overweight, and has a figure that makes her look older then she is, although her face and mannerisms tend to reveal her actual age. She is relatively short, although that may change as she ages. She prefers flowing clothing, often wearing shirts with bell sleeves in jewel tones, with ankle length black skirts. She is extremely self-conscious about her weight.

Power: Phaedra can create illusions. Every illusion she creates has a visual component, but she can also affect the other senses, with extra effort. If an illusion is purely visual, she can maintain it indefinitely, if sound is involved, she can maintain the illusion for only a few hours, and if smell and/or taste is involved, the illusion will only last half an hour to an hour. Touch is the most difficult, and the longest she has made a illusion involving touch last is a couple of minutes. The size and complexity of the illusion also affect how long she can maintain it.

Bio: Phaedra was raised by her mother. Her mother, a normal human, taught English and Composition at a high school in one of the poorer districts of Cloud Metro. Phaedra’s power developed at a fairly young age, but her mother urged her to hide them, and so Phaedra does not have much practice using them. Other than that, Phaedra had a normal enough childhood, although she did not have many friends, preferring books to people. She was something of an outcast at her previous schools, and which she pretended not to care about, but which actually hurt her deeply. Secretly, she hopes starting at a new school, removed from all the children she grew up with will give her a fresh start.

Personality: Phaedra is fairly shy, and is somewhat inept socially. She loves to read, and never goes anywhere without a novel on her person. She is extremely kindhearted, and somewhat naďve, but the most striking characteristic of her personality is her curiosity. She hates not knowing things, and often asks questions that lack tact, driven to find out more.

Other: Unbeknownst to Phaedra, her father is a famous villain with powers similar to her own. He fell in love with her mother, and used illusion to disguise himself during their relationship. Phaedra’s mother eventually found out, and was able to obtain the help of a hero in changing her identity and moving to a different district. It was only a few months later that she found out that she was pregnant with Phaedra. Phaedra’s father is unaware that he has a child.

Nickname: CJ
Gender: Male
Nationality: Finnish-American
Power: Pheromone Manipulation, animal morphing
Bio: CJ lived a very normal life for the most part, even with his mother being in the Navy and moving around the world a lot because of her job was fine for him. What he could never understand was why his father had left her, she was the most strong willed, loving person he knew. She never married or remarried, though she did take on his father's acclaimed last name though, giving it to him also. Sadly, one day, when she was out to sea, something terrible happened, something no one can explain, her ship was attacked and sunk, they found the bodies of her crew members but not her body. This left the 11 year old CJ devastated, he had to pack her things up and sell them, only keeping the trident pendent that she had always wore. That was when his guardian, one of the Naval Officers had told him who and what he was and took him to Stratous Magus. Where he has been ever since.
Personality: He has got a pretty even-keeled head on his shoulders. He is well-grounded and realistic. He doesn't really daydream or think about the future (unless he is planning ahead, of course). Actually, he tends to find day-dreaming and flightiness pretty annoying and pointless. Sometimes people get him confused with being pessimistic, but he knows that he is just being real. Is also very quiet, no one knows why.
Any weird habits?: Has a weird habit of scrunching his nose when he reads or writes, also a bit OCD
Other: unable to control his Pheromone Manipulation. much better at shifting into animals then he is with his pheromone manipulation.

Keara O'Connell (Kilia)

SPOILERX

Name: Keara O'Connell
Age/school year: 19 (n/a)
Job: Security
Appearance: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7...-bow_17e6b.jpg
Nationality: Irish
DOB: Dec. 21
Hair Color: Fire red
Eye Color: emerald green
Height: 5 feet and 6 inches
Weight: ah not telling *wink*
Power: Power negation (Ability to cancel the superpowers of others.), Shadow manipulation.
Bio: What is there to say about Keara? She moved to the USA from Ireland when she was five, for better opportunities, which is what her parents told her. She was the middle child so she didn't get the attention that her older siblings got or her younger ones. She had to fight for everything, working to have money for things she needed, wearing handy down clothes all the time from her older two sisters so her fashion isn't the best.

She gained her powers from her mother as her father was just a normal human. She never knew if her mom was a super hero, or a villain, though one thing was for sure is that she could go either way.
Personality: caring, kind, doesn't let people know when she is angry
Other: does not like being touched, is a bit of a germ-a-phobe. Because of these conditions of hers', she can not be a superhero or villain as it would be extremely hard for her to do something like that.

Masuyo Rei Halenburg (Blueblackrose)

SPOILERX

Quote:

Appearance:
Masuyo stands at 5'8" with an average build, a hourglass shape and toned muscles. She has long wavy black hair with streaks of crimson, hazel grey eyes that changes colors depending on her mood and/or surrounds, and pale ivory skin. She has a small beauty or birth mark below her right eye at the top of her cheek bone.
Masuyo's clothes might not be the most practical, but that's never mattered to her. She wears a plum colored lace up shirt with half sleeves under a striped light olive colored lace up vest, a light olive and plum skirt over brown leggings, knee high brown leather boots and a matching light olive Victorian style hat with a brown ribbon and plum roses. Something that she is never seen without wearing is her oversized brown leather belt, which comes in handy to attach tools to or small satchels when needed. Another item is her brown fingerless gloves, golden bracelets and necklace. The bracelets had been a gift from her parents when she was a child. She doesn't talk about where the necklace came from. For colder weather she has a plum coat with a gold floral design on it that she wears.
Power: Masuyo was given the ability to metamorph, adapt if you will. She is able to change her appearance into anything whether it is another living life form or inanimate objects.To blend into her surrounds she uses a chameleon type effect which allows her to become almost invisible, blending into the surrounding area. Masuyo is able to extend this ability beyond her physical self allowing h clothing, objects she's holding or even someone she is touching to blend into the surrounding area as well as long as there is physical contact between them.
Being able to metamorph is great, but it does have its limits. She isn't able to stay in the form of another living life form for longer than 24 hours. If she tries to stay longer then she will end up changing back and be in extreme pain sometimes to the point that she passes out depending out how far she pushes herself. When it comes to just blending into the environment around her she doesn't have full control over it. Usually her body will do it instinctively as a defense mechanism. If she attempts to do this on her own she has a 90 percent chance of being able to blend in successfully.
Bio: Most of Masuyo's past is just a fuzzy blur to her. The young woman is unable to remember much of her life before the age of 11. One day on the way home a drunk driver swerved off the road striking her. Luckily for Masuyo there was a young man nearby. If it hadn’t been for him she probably would have died at the scene. He kept her alive until help arrived and even stayed with her some while she was in the hospital. She was in a coma for several days, her condition didn’t seem to get much better even after she awoke. With little hope her parents made one of the hardest decisions that any parent could have to make. They agreed to release their daughter into the care of a special rehab facility. The rehab facility came highly recommended, but it held dark secrets. Dr. Johnathan Rhodes used the facility as a front for his human experiments. He was obsessed with the super humans. He was determined to figure out how to give normal humans powers they weren’t born with. This is how Masuyo came to have her powers. Day after day she suffered through experimentation. Her parents never believing her when they visited. Then one day after had a ‘relapse’ they stopped coming to visit. Slowly Dr. Rhodes made sure that she would lose her memory of her former life. As far as he was concerned she now belonged to him. Once she was able to she left the rehab facility and ended up at Stratous Magus.
Personality: Usually Masuyo comes off as being a serious person. She also tends to be quiet and just observe other, only speaking up when she feels the need. When meeting new people she is reserved, which often comes off as her either being shy or cold. Masuyo is also very curious by nature, which leads her to get into trouble sometimes. Once someone sees her true self they will realize that she has a sense of humor, is kind hearted, can be very emotional at times and always putting others before herself.
Since others tend to think of Masuyo as a quiet and serious person she is misunderstood and sometimes leads to them thinking she's a cold person. It can take a while for others to see her true self behind the mask she's created. Those who realize how kind hearted and caring she is sometimes take advantage of her. Normally she'll just bottle up her emotions so when she reaches her limit something will set her off.
Other: Due to all of the experiments and the purposeful amnesia caused by the doctors Masuyo has memory problems. Though there is one memory that still nags at her and that is the one from the day of her accident. If possible she would like to meet and thank that young man who had saved her life all those years ago.

The city of Cloud Metro resembled no other where it sat way up in the clouds. Streets gleamed with polished hard rock that accented the tall buildings twisting up through blue sky and cloudy streamers. The lines of the cable trams got lost in the blurs, showing only sleek boxes sliding through the many vertical levels of the city, like there was no real ground, only grounds above ground. It was at this highest point in the city’s center that Stratous Magus sat.

To those inhabitants of Cloud Metro, the school stood above any other. Not just anyone could get there, but only those who received the letter. A selected pick among of city of normal and abnormal.

Tumaini clenched his letter into a mockery of an origami snake. High up in the city as they were, the sun lit everything so that the school grounds shone in their full vibrant colors. From the city levels below, it looked like a jewel on a black bowl platform, the central pillar disappearing far below to the very base of the city. Up close, it looked a little unreal. As the tram reached its final stop, the group of students started to shuffle off, each of them with a matching ID tag hung around a digital blue lanyard tagged to each of them. He couldn’t say how it worked, but each person’s ID was only theirs to use. Tumaini tucked his beneath a brown cotton shirt and stepped off as well.

The tram’s depot sat on the edge of a large courtyard ringed with rails and what appeared to be a tall glass wall. It disappeared into nothing, looking impressive and almost invisible at the same time. Buildings rose along the courtyard’s sides and took up most of the school grounds, white, silver, and gold making up the predominant colors of the sprawling modern art exhibit. They called this a high school, but it wasn’t that at all. Stratous Magus was a school for those with super powers, and like every other student, Tumaini received his letter because he could do something no regular human could.

Of course, he applied too late, a part of him not wanting to go, so he did not get accepted in time the previous year. Although he didn't procrastinate with that goal in mind, he felt relieved at the time. Now, as he joined the crowd of students walking to a single destination, he just felt apprehensive. Other students walked past him toward the tower at the school's center, but he found his feet faltering.

The opening ceremony. What would it be like? Would every student that would attend the school be stuffed into one great hall? Without a super parent to tell him about the school, he didn't know what to expect. Despite the fact he looked lost though, he knew exactly which way to go. Just follow everyone else. Everyone here was a student or staff after all. Getting accepted upgraded his ID and only those with that access could get on the tram. Besides, the letter told him all he needed to know. Just, not everything he wanted.

In reality, Tumaini just didn't want to follow through. Sighing, he forced his legs to start working again, but he'd long since stopped paying attention to his surroundings and just walked forward with a dazed and rather doomed sort of air.

Of the especially gifted young people getting off the tram, a single student faded into the background. In regular society, Rosemary Hunter usually stood out, for no other reason than her strikingly white hair. But she had a lot of experience being a wallflower, and she was using it that day. Clinging tightly to the envelope that had brought her to the prestigious school in the first place, she waited for everyone else to get off the car before stepping out herself. She squinted in the brilliant light that seemed to reflect off of every surface, struck by the idea that she was standing inside a giant jewel. Once her eyes adjusted, she started following the crowd towards a central tower where she assumed the opening ceremony would be held. She didn't know what to expect from this place, as she had been literally raised by a wolf, but she faced her future with hope. Here, she could learn to control her abilities. Here, she would figure out what she wanted to do with her life. Here, she would finally become someone.

Most people avoided Cal. He reflected on this as he walked towards the center tower for the opening ceremony. Even the new students, fresh off the tram, seemed to instinctively steer away from him. It was probably for the best- getting close to him in any way was basically a death sentence. Which was why he wore dark clothes and put off a dark, moody vibe that clearly said 'stay away from me.' People were always surprised when they heard his last name- a very well known name that had belonged to his father before him. A great superhero, possibly one of the greatest in recent history, now dead because of Cal himself. Calcifer Night could not have been less like his hero father. Of course this train of thought always put him in a bad mood, and he hadn't wanted to go to the opening ceremony in the first place. With that combination of ideas in mind, he found himself turning away from the tower and heading off elsewhere. Where, he wasn't sure yet, but he knew he was going to get into some trouble. It would make him feel better...at least, that's what he told himself.

Stratous Magus, gleaming and sparkling in the sunlight made it blinding as if you were staring into the sun. Well that was how the purple haired male felt as he looked up at the school, taking in how it looked before making sure his sunglasses were on. He could hear a dull roar of voices as students milled about, some excited, others not to happy and dreading the return.

He on the other hand was indifferent to the new school year, having been there before he didn't have to go through the pain of making sure he had all his paperwork filled out or worry if he lost his ID or not. Made him feel a bit nostalgic as he looked at the freshmen talking excitedly to each other about attending the school.

Being one of the first students to arrive, he had his dorm room set up already so now all he needed to do was attend the orientation, and then just watch people as they went about their business. A sigh escaped from his lips while his purple eyes looked around before landing on a familiar figure. The "gym" teacher, who stood outside the tower watching the students enter, was his adoptive parent.

He appreciated the male for everything that he had done for him since he was young but he did wish that he wasn't so overbearing sometimes. Cain stifled a yawn as he gave the teacher a small wave as he slowly made his way towards him. He lazily scanned the area once more, fiddling with his ear ring as he was lost in thought. Since he was not paying much attention to where he was going, he couldn't help crashing into a fellow red haired student who had not been paying attention either.

A force hit Tumaini. He tilted, not catching himself until the last second so that he fell forward, landing on knees and hands instead of all sprawled out. For a second, he just sat there, dazed and wondering why the white stones of the courtyard sat half a foot from his face. Finally, he looked up to focus his eyes on another student. One more blink. "Ah....sorry..." he mumbled after a second, dropping his eyes back to the courtyard as he pulled himself up, brushing pants off and deciding that besides the slightest burn in his palms, he was uninjured. "My fault. Wasn't paying attention."

Once again, he inspected this other person in front of him. With purple hair, he seemed even more stand-out than Tumaini did with his darker skin and red hair, but then, every sort of person seemed to be here. The city below was hardly monotone either. He shoved his hands into his pockets and moved to shift past toward the meeting hall, though still not at any sort of hurried pace. "'Cuse me. The orientation..." Like the other guy didn't know he was headed that way. It was a stupid thing to say and even if the guy wanted to be friendly after this blunder, Tumaini didn't give him a chance. Even if he was here at a school among super people like him, he refused to make any close connections. It was just for the best for everyone.

Despite her efforts to just blend in Masuyo received plenty of stares and whispers. Most of them referring to her hair and her clothing style. She was so grateful when the tram finally arrived at Stratous Magus. Letting out a sigh the young woman followed the crowd of students getting off. Some of them pairing off into groups to head to orientation or to finish up their paperwork. Once off the tram Masuyo lingered back, waiting for the other students to disperse before heading on her own way. Since this wasn’t her first year there was little for her to do before the opening ceremony.

Without warning a pair of arms wrapped around her from behind causing her breath to catch. As soon as she heard a familiar voice whisper in her ear she relaxed. “Darn you Ryker, what have I told you about sneaking up on me like that.” She chided him, the hint of a smile playing on her lips.

The male teacher laughed. “Sorry, sorry, but I couldn’t resist.” Letting go of her waist he spun her around. “So are you heading on over to the opening ceremony?”

She simply nodded, no longer able to hold back her smile. “Yes. It’s good to see you. Do you want to head over together?” He quickly agree, after all it had been a while since they last seen each other. So it would be nice to catch up on things. The pair walked slowly, chatting. It was always good to see Ryker. He had been the one that saved her when she almost died. He had also been the one to help her escape the rehab facility where she was experimented on. Over the years Ryker became like her older brother and her only family.

Cain blinked in surprised as he felt a solid force run into him, or maybe he ran into it. He was even more shocked when he had fallen backwards. Unlike Tumaini he landed on his posterior, having caught himself with his the heel of his hands. A pale hand ran through purple hair, blushing furiously as he finally noticed the person that he had ran into. "Seems it was both our faults." he said softly to the other male, bronze skin and red hair filled his eye sight. Soon the other was standing, while he just sat there watching. Appearing as if he was in a daze though before he could say anything else or move, the boy was already standing.

Giving a small sigh he finally pulled himself up as well, checking his palms more then worried about the dirt on his clothes. He bite his bottom lip as he mulled over some words in his mind, debating on what he should or should not say to the red head. "Ah!" he quickly moved after the bronze male to catch up with him. He didn't want to be sitting among a bunch of strangers and at least he kind of sort of knew this male even if it was just because they bumped into each other. "I'm Cain." he mumbled just as softly as before. He had always been a bit quiet, maybe the reason was because of his accent and he did not want anyone to joke or make fun of him because of it.

Purple eyes looked around the area, taking in the sights and the people. Making note of a female with black and red hair who was chatting with one of the teachers. He even noticed Rosemary and Cal. Though most of all, Tumaini had his attention as he kept pace with the male. He was very comfortable with the silence that filled the air between them. It was far more welcomed then the noise that filled the air from new and old students alike.

Not walking fast himself, it didn't take long for the purple haired boy to catch up with Tumaini. A part of him winced at the thought of companionship, but the rest of him relished it. "Tumaini," he mumbled back in introduction. His eyes remained on the large center building of the campus, hands still shoved in his pockets. No doubt it would be crowded in there, nowhere for one with an appearance such as his to hide. It was a loathsome though, but he was on the course now and it was too late to turn back. Glancing over at Cain again, he tried to guess what he might be thinking, following Tumaini around like this. Did he want something? Yet, Tumaini didn't make an effort to shrug off the conversation completely. He neither actively participated in it nor denied it as the walked through the large open doors of the ceremony hall.

The interior, if possible, looked larger than the outside. Dark wood columns ran up to vaulted ceilings with golden lights dotting the space. Along the walls, sconces held light sources that looked neither like fire nor electricity trapped behind a frosted film. He managed to tear his eyes away and without an obvious pause, walked to one of the back rows of benches to slide in and disappear.

~~~
In the first row of--dare she call them pews?--sat the returning student, Tarja. Her blonde pony-tail looked its primmest, not even a single flyaway outside of the dark brown band. In her lap lay an open notebook, already well scrawled with notes despite being for the new year. Already in her final year, she had no need to come to the opening ceremony. It would teach her nothing new besides changing teachers faces. However, she never missed one and instead, parked herself early in her preferred seat to wait. No emotions crossed her face even as the great hall filled with more and more noisy students. As if in her own world, she ignored them on a mostly empty bench, just the gentle scritch of her pen on paper keeping her company.
"Most people call me, Cj," he stated in a low voice, shrugging his shoulders as if it was not that big of a deal to him. Which it was not, he didn't care what the other called him, or if he wanted to be friends or not. He glanced at the other with his violet eyes, trying to ascertain how he was feeling at having someone near him. Diverting his eyes to the ground, shifting how he was walking slightly by standing more on his tip toes, making sure not to touch the gaps between the pavers.
It took the male a moment to realize that his own fingers were tapping the side of his leg and that some of the other students were giving him an odd look at what he was doing. This knowledge caused him to blush slightly in embarrassment, you could see him struggle with himself to try and fight his little OCD habit. "Sorry...habit," he mumbled softly, letting the silence feel up between them again. He didn't know if the silence made Tumaini uncomfortable or not, it did not bother the Finnish male one bit, though. He noticed the glance, trying to figure out what the look was for, wondering if maybe he was put off by walking to the hall with a complete stranger.
He brushed the thought and unease away as they entered the building, taking in the wonderful and breathtaking sight. Still impressed, in awe at the interior every time he entered into the place. Not even bothered when the red head moved to the far back and quiet spot, while he on the other hand just took a seat in the closest spot to the door. Planning for a quick escape once the orientation is over.
Rosemary followed the crowd into the towering building and as her eyes adjusted, she was amazed. It seemed, if possible, even bigger inside than it had looked from outside. People were filing in, and the seats were starting to fill up. She found herself wondering if the place doubled as a cathedral as she found and claimed a seat in front, next to a blonde upperclassmen who seemed entirely absorbed in her notes. This brought Rosemary a welcome reprieve, the girl's lack of strong emotion acting as a counterbalance to the emotions of the many students crowding the room. Rosemary likened the feeling to putting in earplugs- it helped dim the noise, even if it didn't drown it out completely. She relaxed a little and waited for the ceremony to begin.
If he was going to get into trouble, Cal figured, he'd have to cover his bases first. So, he headed off to his dorm to gather a few things he deemed necessary for such an occasion. Luckily, he either hadn't been assigned a room mate or they simply hadn't gotten there yet. He wasn't ready to meet whatever poor sap had to share a room with him. Gathering a backpack full of essentials, he looked around at his side of the room. It barely looked any different from the empty half, the only sign that someone lived there being the unmade bed and beat up notebook on the desk next to it. It was better that way. Sighing, he headed out into the expansive school grounds, looking for something he could ruin.
Tumaini glanced over at Cain again, almost tempted not to pay him attention. Except, he couldn't ignore this persistent guy. Sighing, he ended up offering a response at least to show he still listened. "...Okay, CJ." He paused. "See ya." With that, they split ways and he couldn't help but wonder why he said even that. An offering, a opening for a second conversation even though he didn't want anything of the sort. He thought. Shaking his head, the red-headed boy settled down to stare at the front of the great hall, wondering when the orientation would start. Already, the pews were filling with students. Starting in the middle, but still, filling out. Closing his eyes, he let out a sigh. Ten minutes then? Well, nothing left but to wait.
At the front of the hall, Tarja shifted slightly, noticing another girl slide into the pew next to her. It was quite unfortunate that even in the first row, seats were getting tight. Of course, this only meant that the time of the orientation drew nearer. Eyes opening to look straight ahead, she straightened her back a bit without acknowledging the individuals on either side of her. Even before the clock struck the hour, she knew it was time, exactly counting down the seconds in her head.
It struck, calling out long and oddly synthesized dongs across the entirety of Stratous Magus. The hall silenced and a man stepped forward, clothed in dark blue robes and white whiskers--the assistant principle. "Everyone!" he bellowed. "I would like to welcome you to Stratous Magus, the only school for those like us! We are proud to have each and every one of you within our sacred hall, so please sit back as I introduce the school principle, Madam Aranae!"
From one of the chairs lined behind the podium, a tall woman stood and strode forward with an air of absolute control. Tarja steeled herself for another orientation speech from a woman whose ferocious appearance was only surpassed by her beauty. Not that she didn't pay attention. The bronze-skinned woman who lead their school wore a purple sleeveless dress that hugged her curves and flowed loose around her legs. A sheer black shawl left lines of twisting black snake tattoos revealed to their eyes as well as the spiders creeping up her legs. The only thing professional about her image was the careful bun she twisted her copper hair into.
"I would like to welcome back all of the returning students as well as the new recruits to our hallowed ranks. I hope we will have a productive and well mannered year here and that all will learn their course in life. Here at Stratous Magus, nothing is more important than our student's goals. Be prepared to reach them because here, not even the sky is the limit," the principle began.
She continued to speak, going over the expectations of the year as well as the rules, most of which were obvious. No using your powers to harm other students. No using them to break the curfew and go to town after the last tram ran. The curfew of course, was rather lenient as far as those went. Most students in the past took no issue to being in their room by midnight. They library was open until curfew. All books should be respected as well as the other common grounds. If a mandatory meeting was called, it was mandatory, no exceptions. Meals were served at the posted hours and if you missed them, food must be bought in the small store separated from the mess hall.
"Now, I hope each one of you will have an astounding year. Make the school proud!" With that, Madam Aranae stepped back to let the teachers introduce themselves and that was it. Thirty minutes after it started, the students were released to move into their assigned dorms.
Cain yawned boredly as the principal droned on about the school rules and what was expected of them. He on the other hand was looking around at his fellow classmates to see what the new year brought in. Oh was he ever thankful about the fact that it was over, he could not get out of there fast enough. He debated on weither or not he should hang about and help Tumaini find his dorm room. Though he also wondered if he should just go straight to his room to find out who his roommate was. He stood outside, off to the side of the door as he watched students filing out, chating with their friends about what room they got. Listening to the disappointment of some as they did not end up in a same room with their friends. He snorted and rolled his eyes, having decided to see if Tumaini needed help finding his dorm room.
Rosemary was glad for the precious time while the headmistress spoke. It was during times like those when the emotions in the room around her were toned down to simple background noise, easy, manageable. As soon as the orientation was finished, however, everything came back full force. Wincing slightly at the overload, the young white haired girl stood up and headed out of the hall, intent on finding her dorm. She only hoped her room mate was a calm person.
While the orientation was happening, Cal took the opportunity to cause a little chaos. His first stop was the track, where he used the white grass paint to draw a very large, very inappropriate picture on the field. After that, he tagged the teacher's quarters, and was attempting to rig the vending machine to fire items at people when people started coming by. He sighed and stood up. Fun was over for the moment. Now it was time to go and face his new room mate.
Keara was wearing the usual outfit that covered her from her neck down, her bright red curly hair was pulled back in a ponytail. A serious look sat on her face as she looked around the hall, reaching out with her shadow to touch every last one as she went over the list in her hand. Making sure that everyone was there, frowning as she found out that Calcifur, the troublemaker, was nowhere to be seen.
She sighed heavily as she stepped within the shadows, using them to quickly find the male. It took her far longer to do so but the trail oof chaos that he left behind him just helped her to find him even better. "Calcifer Night." She said to him in an authoritative voice, switching over to her nullifying power so that he could not use his against her. Her black heels clicked on the stone pavers, she tugged up her gloves to make sure that they were on tightly before reaching out to try and grab his ear. "You are in violation of several rules. Not to mention that the first thing you are to do before we go visit the headmistress is for your to get rid of that inappropriate picture on school grounds." she was not going to put up with his behavior or allow him to get away with what he had been doing in previous years.
Tumaini waited for most of the students to exit the great hall rather than fight the crowds of students. After a few minutes though, he joined the last trickles and did his best to disappear into them even with his bright red hair making him stand out. Or was it the bronzed color of his skin. Sure three heads away he saw luscious locks of sea-greens and blue set off by a gold twinkle along the spine, but he felt conscious of himself. Even here, he would. Finding the center of the courtyard where most of the students milled, he let himself pause for a moment.
A stone cylinder rose from the center like the start of a fountain, but instead of water coming out of the top, a large bulletin screen rose up. The holographic readout switched between layouts of the school and dorm listings for those who lost their printed copy of the assignment. As Tumaini moved, the screen seemed to rotate with him, showing the same diagrams and proving its function to be seen by all sides. He shook his head and tried to put the new technology out of mind because he refused to get dazzled or charmed. No lowering his guard now.
Just as he pulled his slip of paper with the dorm assignment out of his pocket, he spotted a head of purple hair that made his step hesitate. And then, from behind it, the sail of a packaged food item from the nearby vending machine. Tumaini just stared stupidly at the object flying through the air. "Eh...?"
Familiar with the old ear-grabbing trick, Cal ducked aside quickly and glared at the woman. She was barely older than him, with blood red hair and fair skin that spoke of her Irish heritage. He didn't like her- but then, he didn't like anyone who used his full name or tried to tell him what to do. "So sorry, but you don't have enough badges to control me. Anyway, I don't have the skillset necessary to remove my artwork from the field. You'll just have to hope for rain." He smarted off, not bothering to deny it despite the fact that there were plenty of future villains at the school who could have done it. He made no move to use his power, not because of her nullification, but because his no matter how bad he got, he would never use it. Not that he let anyone else know that. It was easier if people were afraid that he'd use it on them. He wasn't afraid of the headmistress- hell, they were practically on a first name basis at this point. It would have been strange if he didn't show up in her office on the first day.
Cain sighed heavily looking boredly up at the bulletin that came out of the top of the fountain, not really paying attention to it so he had no clue who his roommate was or if he was even going to get one, not that he minded. Though he would prefer to have a roommate so that he wouldn't have to spend the night alone in a room where he was left with nothing but his nightmares and thoughts. He hated being alone, not wanting to be engulfed by the deep depression that he kept buried and hidden deep inside.
The purple haired male jerked and ducked as he almost got hit with a can of soda, he quickly made his way away from the vending machines, not wanting to get caught in the crossfire of Cal's prank. He was happy that he was not in the same room with that male, after all, who knew what the male would do to his roommate since he did terrorize the school.
He looked over the mass of students again before he spotted Tumaini. The red hair and bronze skin made it a bit hard to miss him. Though Cain always felt like he blended in a bit easily especially in comparison to the male. "Tumaini!" he called out to him, giving a small wave as he fought to get through the crowd, making sure not to touch anyone as he did so. "Ah! Hey again. I was wondering if you need any help with finding your dorm room. I mean umm...." he rubbed a hand through his purple hair, turning his purple eyes away as he blushed. He felt awkward and silly, kind of like he was trying to ask for a date and is now faced with the anxiety of a possible rejection. "Not that...just...I came early and had set up my dorm already so I umm...just want to help that is."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Keara grounded her teeth a bit at him ducking away from her trying to grab his ear, she did her best to remain calm with dealing with him. "Your just a buachaill dána," she mumbled, not caring to explain what she meant to him, she gave him a bored look. He always seemed to just act out, be bad, and continue to do the same thing every day. "Calcifer." she sighed, switching to her other power, stepping on his shadow to hold him in place and to keep him from escaping her.

"You may say that now but you should realize that I am the head security here," she spoke to him, moving to stand in his shadow completely, her skin paling as she kept her smile on her face. "How about you get some water and wash it away, then you can fix the vending machines. Even take care of your other little pranks that I am sure that you have set off already." she reached a hand out to grab his ear again, letting go of his shadow in the process. "I am not afraid of you like you think."

Tumaini still blinked stupidly when Cain turned toward him. Thankfully the soda can didn't hit the other boy considering Tumaini remained too stunned at the time to call out and warn him. Why? He couldn't say. He knew he should have said something, but the idea of food flying through the air got to him. As Cain came up next to him, Tumaini remembered to smile a second later. "Oh...hi again," he managed, then cleared his throat, aware that he sounded awkward and almost gruff. He just spoke that way though, not meaning anything by it. Looking over at the bulletin screen, the vending machine, then Cain again, he shrugged in response.

"I've got my assignment already and all," Tumaini said as he lifted up the now many folded and unfolded piece of paper he'd just been looking at. And yet, the whole gesture looked like an excuse. He recognized that himself. Looking down at the criss-crossing of lines on the paper, he hesitated. Even if he said yes, it wasn't like he was making friends with Cain. Just, using him. Tumaini sighed and started walking toward a group of buildings that curved around the main courtyard with almost identical looking facades. If he remembered the map correctly, they should be the dorms. He just needed to find the right one now. "But..." he added with a glance over at Cain. "...I wouldn't mind a little direction."

~~~
As soon as the opening ceremony ended, Tarja pushed her way into the rush of the crowd. She didn't let herself get swept away by it though. No, she owned it, lead it even. With her back high, she managed to move past even much larger boys and find a place at the start. That allowed her to miss the real crowding at the bulletin. She didn't even spare it a glance and instead headed straight for the dorm building on the farthest right of the grouping. The gilded details around the sweeping windows made even the simple stone work look stellar in the way of something otherworldly. However, she was used to it and pushed through the wooden doors into the plush carpeted hall beyond. She requested a single room--her right as a final year student--but as she reached the given room number and unlocked the door with her ID card, she saw two beds pushed up against opposite walls.
A frown painted her thin lips, turning her face into the sort of marble sculpture one expected to depict a goddess of war. "Nothing to be done about it now," she sighed as she swung her bag onto the bed closest to the desk. As soon as she could though, she would talk to the administration about this horrible slight against her. She might be able to heal people with just a touch. That didn't mean she had to play the selfless hero though.
Cal's eyes flashed dangerously as the woman stepped into his shadow, keeping him from moving. Did she really think that was a good idea? For all anyone knew, Cal was a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off. He barely acknowledged that she had managed to grab his ear, simply swatting her hand away like a fly. "I don't need you to be afraid of me, O mighty Head of Security. I only need you to realize that I am not afraid of you. You can't control me. I don't want to wash off the field, so unless you literally have the power to turn me into a puppet and force me, there's nothing you can do." He spoke calmly, voice cold as ice. What was it with these adults, thinking they could control him? Why did he have to do what they said? Just because they tell him something doesn't mean he has to listen. "And by the way, I'm not a boy. I'm a nightmare. Don't think you can use another language to insult me." He sneered, for no other reason than to show off that he understood what she said.
Cain smiled at him, grabbing Tumaini's hand so that he could pull him further out of the way of the spewing machines. He could feel his face heat up as the male turned a smile on him, he could not help the giddy feeling that he felt inside. He mentally scolded himself, here he was just trying to make a friend and he was already trying to make it possibly more than that. He had no right to do so no matter how handsome and good looking the guy is. He should wait to get to know the person before he did something like that, glancing the offered piece of paper over.
He was lost in thought to the point that he had not even noticed how awkward the male sounded at that point. He was snapped back to attention when spoken to once more, giving a sheepish smile in reply. "Oh! I gu--" before he could finish his sentence, Tumaini had spoken again. He didn't even realize that he still had a hold of his hand, only realizing that he was when the male had walked away to the dorms. A soft look crept on his face as he digested his words, happy that he accepted. He quickly caught up with him, making sure he was going to the right building. "I would gladly give you a bit of direction. I do hope we can become friends as well." he spoke gently to him as if he was trying not to scare him off, directing him to where he needed to go in the process.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Keara was getting a bit frustrated with this rebellious child, even when she was in school with Calcifer he acted in this way and it irritated her back then as well. She noticed the look in his eyes but she was not going to back down just because he was letting her know that he dangerous. "I don't expect anyone to fear me. I am here to make sure the students are safe including ya and to deal out punishment to those who do not follow the rules." she kept a calm level tone of voice, her Irish accent prominent. Letting him swat her hand away from his ear since he already knew she was not going to let him go so easily.

"I am sure I can find someone who can make ya a puppet for me. Though if ya don't clean up ya pranks then ya will just have to spend a month in detention." a smile slid on her face as she said that to the dark haired male, no one liked detention. It was kind of like being stuck in a spherical room and being told to find a corner to sit in while being left alone completely with nothing but your thoughts. She raised one of her eyebrows at him, she had to admit that she was quite impressed that he understood her native tongue, but she wasn't going to tell him that. "Boyo, ya no nightmare o' mine." she couldn't help but to snort and roll her eyes. "Not an insult when it is the truth. Now if ya done actin' the maggot. Can ya hurry up and decide if ya want to clean up ya mess or head to detention." she crossed her arms as she stared him down, thankful for the fact that she was covered completely from her neck down, not knowing what sort of germs he could have on him.

Cal glowered. Why did people do this? Why did everyone insist on putting themselves in danger around him? Knowing he could hurt them? He didn't want to hurt anyone. But this woman didn't even realize that he wasn't being threatening, that he was a literal nightmare. But it was probably better that way. The less people that knew about his power, the better. "So my choice is clean up, or detention?" He pretended to think about it. He didn't feel like arguing with her anymore, didn't want to risk losing his temper, and the fastest way to get her off his back was to listen for the time being. He would just sneak out some other time anyway. "Well, I'm not cleaning up so I guess that leaves detention. Go ahead and lead on, old lady." Hey, if she insisted on calling him a boy, he was going to respond in kind.

Tumaini startled at the feel of Cain's hand in his and almost snatched at away, but after a second, let it be. Once again, he reminded himself that he wasn't make friends. Just walking to the dorm. Cain's hand felt warm against his flesh though and he knew it might give away his secret. Still, he didn't let go as they reached the building to the far left, knowing all the well the importance of keeping warmth close. "This...is it?" he asked after clearing his throat. Of course all the buildings looked the same to him, but Cain seemed sure that he picked the right one. After a second, Tumaini wondered if the other boy also stayed in this dorm. He both relished and feared that possibility. "What about you? Is this your dorm too? I..." He shook his head, choosing not to finish the thought. He worried about who his roommate might be. If all things went well, someone who wouldn't have any interest in him hopefully. Maybe a villain's son. What else could be more perfect?

As they turned down the dorm's neatly ordered halls, Tumaini finally freed his hand. Digital numbers shone at the ends of the hall, marking clearly which way he should go. Knowing he had no reason to continue with Cain, he bid the warmth of the other's presence farewell. "Well...my room is this way. Thanks..." He trailed off again, then turned away, ready to walk on if the other boy didn't respond. Classes started tomorrow. He just needed to make it until then.
