It's not everyday that a famous pirate stumbles upon a wandering ship full of riches and wealth. It's not everyday that a famous pirate takes someone of high caliber as their hostage. To anyone, the story probably goes that out of love for his daughter, the king would just do anything for her, also including to pay off the ransom. This is a different story. What happens if things don't go according to plan? Will there be love and romance on the high seas? Or just treachery and deceit?

Clark Hackney, "the Striker", Captain of The Dreaming Serpent (art by marty-mc)
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Personality: Lax, lazy, would rather have someone else do it unless they don't do it right, Clark is a very wayward pirate. He can be goofy and playful when he chooses to be, but more often than not, he is commandeering and dominant. This is the sort of personality that he wants to exude in front of strangers and whenever he arrives on port. Otherwise, he'd do the least amount of work needed to get the job done, but when he gets angry, he would do anything, burning anyone in his way.
Bio: Clark was born to a poor shoemaker family. Stories of piracy have always fueled him and his dreams, even when he spent a few years as a professional shoemaker. When a pirate named Avery caught sight of him on the streets, he offered him a life on the seas for a lifetime supply of personalized shoes. He figured that he would always go back home to spend whatever money he came across so he accepted, and thought that making shoes would be his only skill on the high seas. He was wrong. On the ship, he was personally trained, went through turmoil (with the disappearance of Avery and the heartbroken death of both his parents), and managed to do enough to turn his anger to victories. He became well-known for his striking attack with his cutlass that no other has broken through. Since then, he is feared on the seven seas, but only pillages when necessary.

Ariel Damiani (art by Saiman Dullah)
Age: 21
Gender: Female
Personality: Shy and withdrawn, she managed to copy the mannerisms and ways of the high court ever since she came to their employ. Around high-society people, she is meek and quiet, just as they expected her to be, but around people of her class and those whom she works closely with, she can be crass and biting. Ariel is instantly suspicious of anyone who treats her with any amount of kindness, as the world around her became hard enough that she expected no less.
Bio: Ariel was taken from her family, from the islands of Indonesia, from a young age. She was put under the care of a head maid who taught her everything she needed to know in order to serve her masters and mistresses promptly and properly. When she was in her teens, she had the horrible realization that she wasn't where she was supposed to be, and that her parents probably died of either slaughter or grief from losing her. Ariel turned into a whirlwind from such introspection, and turned to drinking and prostitution as a way to deal with her emotions. She felt nothing when some of her masters and mistresses wanted their way with her, which left her as a shell walking the earth. Her latest mistress was one that sparked a sort of love and companionship within her; her mistress now had morals and a greater sense of serving her country, something Ariel could not have and do. She now fiercely has an inspiration, and tries to work with herself and how she deals with people. She can turn back to her old ways when under such influences, but it's a lot better than back then.

----------

"See anything out there?"

The day started out with a fine mist. With Clark as superstitious as he is, he guessed something or someone would just jump out of the mist and take him and his men by surprise. His hands twitched with anxious nerves; it was a while since they pillaged some poor sod of a ship. Despite his men's complaints, Clark chose to not pillage whatever villages they came across. Unless they started the fight first. And unless they showed that they had considerable wealth, just waiting to be stolen. This was a personal rule that he chose to develop only later in his life, when all he learned with Avery was to go for the gold, no matter what.

Reminiscing, he shook his head. Clark wasn't sure if Avery would ever be satisfied by how much gold he could amass. 'There is more to life than just gold,' he thought. His years on the high seas gave him great recognition, he was sure that that was enough to live a long, good life. Being a pirate, though, you never know when someone will turn on you.

Clark was drawn out of his own thoughts by a wavering voice. His eyes darted up to the source of the noise and he gave him a small smile. "How can we see anything with this damned fog 'ere? It's a curse," the man at the ship's wheel answered.

"Hmph. I figured."

Ariel felt a tingling ever since they left port.

She finds herself on the sea again, after 17 years of being away. It almost felt like a homecoming, except she wasn't going home but rather to a wedding. Maybe she always felt at home in the sea. It was where the most change occurred for her in her life. Leaning on the ship's side, she wished she had a smoke. Or if her mistress wanted her to do something. She hated anything but idleness and boredom.

Ariel watched the ship's men adjust and readjust the sails when necessary, a young boy started to mop the deck even though it had been cleaned through and through hours ago. There's not much you can do when there's a fog covering your field of view. She could feel the droplets in the air, frizzing up her hair. She picked at the skin of her lip. Why couldn't she just have better hair, or a wig?

The tingling only got slightly worse when the fog had settled in. Anything could happen, anyone could jump at them at any moment. Ariel unfortunately wasn't given anything weapon-worthy, despite her attempts at attaining some kind of dagger she could keep under her skirt, or something along those lines. Even then, was she prepared to fight? Probably not.

With a deep breath, she turned over to face the sea. It was quiet, almost ghostly.

Gerard Sanders
Male
27
First Mate
Personality: Gruff, angry, and often drunk. Few things made Gerard happy, mostly sailing, a stiff drink, and perhaps a pretty woman. Few people have ever seen him smile unless a grin while in a drunken stupor counts. Mostly speaks in grunts and mumbled, and doesn't much enjoy conversation with anyone. Despite this, takes orders and is will to get the job done, no matter what it takes.
Bio: His grandfather was a pirate, his father had been a pirate, it was only natural that he was as well. At first he wasn't happy about a young pirate captain, but they ate well enough, pillaged a bit, and the ship was still floating, so there was little to complain about. That didn't mean he fully trusted the young captain, but he did what was expected of him to earn his pay. Of course if a better opportunity came along, he'd be more than willing to take it. No one really knows about this life, since he's spoken little of it. His mother was a whore, his grandmother as well. His family seemed to be a long line of bastards born to whores, sons raised on pirate ships, taught to sail at a young age. He had no port, no place to call home, and that was fine with him, he had no plans to settle. Just like his ancestors, he planned to sail until the day he died.

Rose Angelina Edwards
Female
18
Princess
Personality: Bubbly, trusting, and far too caring. She has often been considered the ideal lady, perfect in just about every sense, sweet and soft-spoken. Despite all this, she has wanted more, at least so far as to wish she could be like her brothers, traveling the world, seeing everything there is to offer. She does have a quick wit at times, though she rarely shows it, as it is unbecoming of a princess. She often enjoys reading, as well as drawing, pursuits that are mostly suitable for her, according to her mother. She is naive, having been kept at the castle most of her life, she trusts easily and always seems to see good in everyone she encounters.
Bio: As the only daughter of the king, and their youngest child, she had been spoiled most her life, by her father, her five brothers, and all of the country. She has rarely stepped foot outside of the castle, has no friends other than those deemed acceptable by the king himself. Her brothers have always been protective of her, guarding her from any evil, keeping her safe from the bad in the world. She has always understood her place in the world, as the princess, and knew she would one day marry to strengthen her fathers alliances.

--------------------

Rose could not contain her excitement as the ship pulled away from the harbor. She hated to leave her family behind, but they would follow soon, in time for the wedding, she hoped. Even the prospect of marrying a strange did not douse her excitement, why should it? She had always know this was her fate, she found herself fortunate that he was a prince, and only ten years her senior. She had never been on a ship before, nothing more than a small boat on a lake for a quick turn, which made this all the more exciting for her. Her gloved hands gripped the rails as she took a deep breathing, enjoying the cool, salty air. Of course as the princess, and a lady, she wasn't allowed on deck for long, forced below to a spacious cabin, appointed with all sorts of pretty baubles and fancy trims that seemed out of place. Four guards were situated in the hall just outside, proving how safe she would be on her journey.

Her excitement didn't wear off, despite the long, sort of tedious days on the ship. For short periods she was allowed to stroll the deck, then banished back to her quarters where she read, did needlepoint, and napped. Apparently the salt air could make one quite tired. She had only just woken up from a nap before she asked to be allowed on deck, needing the fresh air. A light fog seemed to swirl around the ship, something Rose thought was quite magnificent, as if they were sailing on the clouds. "Princess!" The call of the guard forced her to turn her head and search him out in the fog. He approached, bowing respectfully, "You will catch a chill in this weather, allow us to escort you back to your chambers." As always, she pasted a soft smile on her face and nodded. "Of course, but please, just one more moment..." She wandered towards the railing, situating herself as near her ladies maid as she could get, without completely knocking the woman down with her vast array of hoops and petticoats. "It seems this weather is dangerous to our health, return with me to my quarters?" Her question was directed at Ariel, her voice soft as she asked. If she was forced to be below deck, she wanted to amuse herself somehow, and with few women on board, she seemed to be the only choice.

---

"Should'a stayed docked one more night..." Gerard grumbled as he leaned against the railing of the ship, spyglass in hand. It was practically useless in the fog, which seemed to have rolled in rather quickly. The last thing they needed was to run aground, or into another ship. Not that he would complain about a little action, they had seen so little lately and he itched to run his sword through something. He tucked the spyglass away, the metal clicking as it bumped the sword at his waist. His thoughts returned to bottle of rum in his hand, it seemed far too light for how perfectly normal he felt. The bastards must have watered it down. Perhaps they had done the English some good by stealing the shipment, it was cheap rum, not even fit for a pirate. Not that it stopped him from taking another swig.

After a long moment he searched out the captain, finding him near the wheel. "What's th' plan?" It was a mistake to keep sailing in the fog like this, not when they didn't know what, or who, would be nearby.

Clark turned his head to another source. It was his first mate, still as antsy as ever. "We'll slow down, but not stop, just in case something comes ou' a' us." He nodded to the man at the wheel and turned, barking orders at the rest of the crew, who had begun to get as antsy as Gerard due to the fog. Clark turned to Gerard and asked, "Do you 'ave any ideas on what we should do? Spyglass won't do much in this damned weather." He paused. He told his men around him to keep quiet. Clark thought he heard voices coming out of the fog. Some of the men started to get scared.

Clark drew in close to Gerard. "Tell the rest of the men to ready their weapons. Some poor sod must've got caught in the same fog, and we won't be the ones unawares." He reaches for his cutlass and keeps a close watch on the surroundings around him. The fog started to lighten up, and the man at the wheel reached for a spyglass to keep watch.

Ariel turned around to the sound of her mistress' voice. She gave her a smile and shivered a bit. "I agree. This weather is giving me a little bit of a chill." She started to walk alongside the princess as the men around her shouted orders to one another to keep the ship steady, so as to not get into such grave accidents. She frowned at the loudness and brashness of their voices. She leaned closer to Rose (or at least close enough as her petticoats and layers would allow her) and mused, "I've always thought to be silent when caught in fogs like this. Who knows who may be listening?"

As the guards kept pestering them to get below deck, Ariel made a small sigh of annoyance. Being on such seas like this means that they should be above deck anyway. The sea air was more refreshing than the air back where the princess lived, although she wasn't sure if Rose preferred it herself. Ariel almost felt sorry for Rose, kept inside for so long only to be brought outside for a marriage, basically another excuse to be kept inside even longer.

(Sorry for the late reply! Friends came over for the weekend and I wasn't able to have some alone time to myself.)

"Prepare yourselves!" Gerard gave the order, which was repeated by crew until he was sure everyone had heard. This is what they needed, a good fight to keep the men on their toes, and perhaps some gold for their next stop in port. If they were really lucky, and by they, he mostly meant himself, there would be some good brandy or rum on board, which he was sure the captain wouldn't mind if he helped himself. Despite having been in his cups all morning, he felt steady on his feet and reached for the sword that hung at his waist. It was more than fancy for someone like himself, with a gilded handle in the shape of a dragon, a ruby for an eye. He had gotten it from some poor English Lord they happened upon, eager to exchange it for his life. Most would have sold it for a quick buck and a barrel of rum, but what use did he have of money right now? Call it an insurance plan, if you will, ready to turn it into quick funds if it is needed.

He scanned the fog, looking for any sign of the other ship they heard. Hopefully they would be wealthy and English, an easy combination with great rewards. "I see somethin', Cap!" He called out, noticing a dark shadow in the fog coming up on the port side.

---

"Who could possibly hear us? We're hours away from land." Rose murmured to herself, mostly. Despite the long days at sea, it was still exciting to her, the anticipation of getting to somewhere new kept her up at night. As she made her way back to the stairs that would lead her below, she looked up to the flag, flying her family crest, that of the King. Three guards seemed to surround her, keeping at bay the men who worked on the ship, which surprised Rose. Were they not friendly? They were employed by the King, she couldn't imagine they would be anything but nice to her. Not that she said anything, it wasn't her place to question her father's orders, which she knew the guards acted upon. She was all prim and proper as the guards ushered her back below deck, forced into her cabin once more, probably for the rest of the night.

The cabin she called home, at least for now, wasn't overly large, but it was spacious enough for the two of them. A large, double bed with plush coverings was built in with the woodwork, cabinets lining the bottom. A bench, with a plush topping, had served as a second bed for her lady's maid. Several of her trunks were lashed to the wall with leather straps, enough dresses for her journey, as well as things she needed. Of course many more trunks were stashed away, filled with dresses and other fripperies. Some wedding gifts from her home country to take with her to her new home with the prince. Ornate carvings, fine china, anything one could imagine, she seemed to have received as a gift. Alone she had five fur cloaks, more than she could imagine she needed, but apparently her new home was much colder. Not that she minded.

Another of her wedding gifts, a small white kitten with a large pink bow around its neck, meowed at her as she entered the room. "Oh, Fancy, I'm sorry to have left you, but the captain insists you're not to go on deck..." She picked up the cat and nuzzled her face against her white fur. Hopefully her new husband would allow her to keep Fancy, she would hate to have to be without her. Kitten in hand she moved to a plush chair and sat down, smoothing her skirts out and letting the kitten curl up on her lap, needing the layers of fabric. "How shall we pass the time?" She would be woefully bored without Ariel on this journey.

Clark moved towards Gerard, prodding him to tell what he saw. Before he could answer, he could also see a shadow coming up. With a stern look to the rest of the men, they kept quiet. Some of the smaller, newer folk they picked up along the way prepared gangplanks for them to traverse to the other ship, if necessary. Clark's eyes narrowed. With a quick hand flick, he gestured to the man at the wheel to raise their flag.

The few seconds that passed by as the other ship came more into view was almost excruciating. Everyone was holding their breath, either scared or ready for what the fog would bring. Clark could feel the energy and tension in the air. It had been weeks since the last haul, and he had a good feeling about the loot they're about to get. He lived by the rule, never to pillage unless they looked like they deserved it, and his lips curved into a smile when he realized what kind of ship came into view. The king of all the treasure ships they could come across, and it was prefaced by a nasty fog.

Once it was clear what kind of ship it was, Clark raised his cutlass and let out a yell. The rest of the men started yelling, and cannons fired. The man at the wheel maneuvered the ship well enough that they were right side by side, and some of his men took the opportunity to just simply jump over and bring destruction. The younger ones threw over hooks in order to bring in the ship closer, cannons only used to aim towards the hordes of royal guards that huddled together like penguins.

And with that, Clark yelled out a warning, "Leave the shiniest-looking one alive."

Ariel shook her head. "Doesn't the fog bother you, milady?" She couldn't blame her, though. Rose was kept inside for far too long and she felt her excitement when she told Ariel about the trip. Before the guards closed the door to the deck behind her, she thought she could feel the air tingle with tension. Maybe the fog was finally letting up and everyone was anxious to get out of it. Before she could think too much of it, she sat down on the bench where she slept at night and took a breather. "Does the air feel kind of... stiff to you?" She asked, wondering why they weren't given windows to open to. Would that make sense on a ship? She didn't know.

Ariel heard muffled yelling. The back of her neck started to tingle. She shot up. "Milady, that doesn't sound good." Right after she voiced her concerns, she heard a loud boom, and the ship shook a bit. Ariel wobbled on her feet, sitting back down on her bed for balance. 'Are we...under attack,' she thought, the worry clear on her face. She tried to look for a place for them to hide; she considered being captured by pirates as a worse fate than death, especially if one was a woman.

It took a lot of control to keep himself still as the ship grew closer and closer. Gerard was ready for a battle, his hand twitched as he held the hilt of the sword in it. The call went up and hell was unleashed, but he held back a moment longer, letting the fray get well and truly going. Soon after he was leaping from the deck of their ship onto the floating treasure chest, belonging to none other than the king. His feet hit the deck and he was off, taking on any opponent willing to get into his way. A large amount of guards seemed to be circled around the steps that led into the hull of the ship. Oh, that must mean something good was hiding down there, and he wanted to find out.

As he approached a guard broke formation and he charged at him, sword clashing with sword. The familiar ache in his arm from a good fight reminded him of how much he had missed this. A well placed slash to his chest had him on the deck and the other guards on the ready to attempt to take him out. He wasn't fool enough to think he could take them all on at once, so he stood his ground as another approached. Slowly he would take them out and steal the King's riches. "We must protect her!" Came the voice of one of the guards. Had he heard correctly? Maybe they meant the ship. Yes, probably the ship.

---

Rose wasn't sure anything bad could happen, she hadn't heard of a ship sinking, not one of her father's ships, anyways. Why would anyone attack the King's ship? No, people loved her father. Perhaps her ladies maid was mistaken. But the shouts grew louder, steps pounding on the deck above her was not normal. At least she had her guards, who would surely keep her safe and sort out what must be a horrible misunderstanding. "I'm sure it will all be fine." It was easy enough for her to say so, she had been sheltered all her life and knew little about the dangers of the world.

"I wonder when the meal will come..." She murmured to herself, hoping the evening meal would not be delayed too much.

Clark watched over the ship for a brief while as his men went and plundered what they could. This was the jackpot for them, as the fog really started to lighten up and it turned out to be one of the king's bigger ships. It was obvious that a ship of that size would hold something precious. He kept a close eye on Gerard, though. As his first mate, he almost felt responsible for him, even though Gerard had a few more years on him.

He grabbed a rope and swung over once he realized that Gerard was down, with a gash on his chest. He landed in front of the guards, cutlass in hand, with a near murderous look in his eyes. The first one that attempted to lunge at him first was met with a strike to the chest. Clark stepped back, his weapon pointedly waving at the rest of them. "You can either fight me, or jump overboard. Your choice," he seethed. A couple of his men stood stock still behind him as they finished off their targets. The guards hesitated, one of them disregarding the warning and attacked with a yell.

Clark made a small smile. He simply stepped to the side and struck the man's back with a deeper gash.

"Anyone else?"

The noises died down. Ariel feared the worst. "Milady, I don't think this is the time to be worrying about food." She got up and tried to get the chests off the wall, unraveling the leather straps. "Don't you realize the danger we're in? Have you heard of pirates and how they rape and pillage?" She screamed, almost hysterical. Ariel pushed what chests she could with her small frame. The chests could only move a few feet at a time, heavy with wedding gifts and thick clothing. She could never understand the idea of layering clothes like royalty.

"This is not the time to worry about a meal. Worry about your own life, miss!"

It had been enough to knock him to his ass, but not so much that he was out of the fight. He jumped to his feet, moving beside his captain, who had put fear into the guards. Anger flooded him, how had he let the guard wound him like that? Sure, he had a bit more to drink today than usual, but he felt fine. "Figure they hidin' sumin' good, aye cap'n?" His voice was near a growl, his sword ready for one of them to attack. None of them seemed to be moving torn between protecting the riches or their own lives. "Go on men, kill these filthy bastards!" The call to arms came from the back of the pack, probably the captain, cowering behind his own men. Three of the guards moved at once and Gerard charged into the fray. It wasn't long before the others, the older captain included, joined in the fight. He was glad to have the captain at his back.

"We will not surrender!" Came a battle cry from a guard, who Gerard quickly took out with a well placed lunge into his stomach, breaking through the chain mail. That was music to his ears, no prisoners this time, they would take the riches and sink the ship and be on their way.

===

Rose looked at Ariel in awe, why was she so concerned. "I warn you not to raise your voice at me..." She murmured, though she lacked any bit of malice and threat. Why should she be worried? "Pirates? I think not, father took care of them long ago." That is what he had told her, and since she had heard no report of pirates, obviously it was true. "Besides, if they were out there, they wouldn't dare attack the King's ship." She crossed her arms and didn't move, feeling no need to dive into hysterics like her ladies maid. It was probably quiet because the problem was taken care of and they'd soon be on their way.

With her maid having gone mad, she poured herself a glass of wine from a nearby decanter, sipping it. She had nothing to fear, her guards were some of the best her father had, they would protect he and strike down any foe. Not that she believed there was one. "Cease with your hysterics. You're frightening Fancy." The cat was meowing loudly and scampering across the room.

"Men! Finish the rest of 'em!" Clark yelled, grabbing Gerard's arm and pulling him close. "Come on, there 'as to be something down 'ere," he said, motioning towards the doors that the guards tried to protect so well. He grabbed another man as they pushed through the fray, wounding a few others in the process. He managed to reach the door and race downstairs, a glint in his eyes as he mowed down the rest of the stragglers, making sure to keep the women alive for the rest of the men to take.

He came upon a more ornate door than the rest, lowering the sword at his side. He listened in, only hearing dragging sounds across the floor and almost hysterical screaming. Clark tried to open the door, only met with force from a chest someone had put in front of it. "Open the door! The rest of yer crew is dead," he ordered, his hands itching for some treasure.

Ariel was almost in tears, she didn't want to be captured again. She didn't want to be used again. The voice at the door only confirmed her fears. Seeing that her mistress wouldn't do a damned thing to listen to her, she decided to just step back, almost in defeat. She didn't dare answer the voice at the door, fearing for her life. 'Damn the guards,' she thought, wanting to have some sort of a weapon in hand.

Her eyes alighted on a small bust of the princess' face. Ariel lifted it a bit, almost daunted by its size, but it would serve well enough as a weapon.

Gerard was near giddy with excitement at the prospect of what they might find. The hysterical screaming behind the door they stopped at made him pause. A woman? He couldn't imagine all those guards were be there to protect a woman. Perhaps she was just the captains whore. When the captain gave orders that were not answered or obeyed, he threw himself into the door, the heavy wood creaking and groaning with his weight. Despite the ache in his shoulder he did it once more, pressing on the door until it opened a bit. He could see the edge of a wooden chest. Ah, so the lady tried to stop them. He groaned as he pushed once more, the chests moving away from the door slowly at first, but there was enough room for them to squeeze through.

The room was well appointed, finer than any other he'd seen before. A small, white ball of fluff hissed at him and he narrowed his eyes at it. He was about to give it the boot when he felt a slap across his face. "Do not dare hurt him, you fiend." The voice belonged to that of a quite pretty lady, long chestnut hair piled atop her head. The gold brocade dress and diamonds around her neck gave away that she was more than some simple miss. He grabbed her wrist, squeezing the pale, tender flesh. "You will regret that." His voice dripped venom, it was a warning he meant to make good on.

===

Rose hadn't believed Ariel, well until a rather gruff voice had sounded outside the door, informing them that the crew was dead. No, that had to be some mistake. Who would attack their ship? Sure once they saw she was the princess they would realize their mistake. Father would not be happy with them.

The door came open, allowing entry of a rather rough looking man. His blond hair dirty and matted, a scraggly beard to match. He wasn't dressed like anyone she had seen before, and he didn't look all that friendly. Stomping her slippered foot, she made her way towards door, only to get there just in time to slap him before he had hurt Fancy.

The rough hand around her wrist surprised her and she gasped, struggling to break free. "Unhand me! This is no way to treat a princess!" Her voice seemed to rise higher, and she tried to keep back the hysterics. Yet the hand about her wrist only tightened, her fingers feeling numb from the lack of blood flow. Her other hand clawed at the dirty fist that held her, crying out as he moved forward into the room, all but dragging her towards the bed. What could he possibly think he was doing? The king would have his head for this!

Clark stepped back as Gerard took control of the whole door situation. "Uhh, I guess that'll work," he muttered to himself, the rest of the crew piling in after Gerard. He put his sword back in its scabbard as he walked inside. They hit the jackpot. The room was full of chests and plush material, making obvious the amount of money spent in buying such things. He observed the entanglement between Gerard and who he guessed to be the prized jewel the guards were protecting, rather poorly, he might add.

"Lady, you're on the high seas, which gives us jurisdiction to pillage and plunder as we please," Clark mused, walking up to her. He grabbed whatever collar of her dress and looked her over. He guessed that she was the daughter of the king, and he could see a hefty sum of ransom money in their future. But that seemed too complicated to mess with. Either way, she would die with no one else on the ship alive save for a few women.

Clark gave Gerard a look, telling him to back down. "This doesn't give you jurisdiction to disrespect your elders," he mused, eyeing her again. He noticed the serving girl in the room with her, scared and hysterical, held down by a few of his men.

"Take what you want! We'll be stopping at a port soon," Clark ordered, giving more orders to procure their supplies to bring back on the ship.

Ariel yelled and was about to smash Gerard's face in, if it wasn't for the other pirates stopping her in her tracks. The bust fell to the floor with a large crash, and a few men had to hold her down by her arms as she started sobbing and screaming. She screamed to let her go, saying how she would rather die than be held by pirates. Seeing Clark, she spat at his feet while he paid no attention to her.

Her mind raced to the worst case scenario. She started to regret accompanying the princess across the sea, biting the inside of her lip to keep herself from crying out more.

Gerard all but threw the princess to the bed, grumbling about it as he did so. Of course the captain would claim his right to go first. He stepped back and waved Clark forward with a sarcastic bow and sweeping hand motion. He watched as the princess pouted, he had expected tears, not pouting and glares. How was she not afraid of them? Everyone knew what happened to ladies when caught by pirates. He glanced around the room, others were already rifling through the chests, piles of fancy dresses strewn about, useless to the men. Some held up strange objects, and a few all but giggled over some lacy underthings. That had the princess blushing and he laughed.

The deep laugh had him grabbing his chest, hissing in pain. he had nearly forgotten about his wound. His hand came away covered in blood and he frowned. Apparently it had been a bit deeper than he thought.

===

"My father will hunt you down if you dare lay a hand on me!" Rose warned, getting to her feet and putting her hands on her hips. The coils of hair on her head had come loose and fell around her face. A blush sat on her pale cheeks, and a frown on her rosy lips. "I am a princess, I demand you leave my chambers and let me continue on to my husband." Who would ignore the demands of the princess? She could hardly believe that they actually killed her guards, but as hse looked closer she noticed the signs of battle, blood splattered on their clothing and skin. Had she misjudged the situation? Perhaps Ariel's hysterics were justified.

"Sir, I beg you..." She asked, putting on the same face she used to get anything she wanted from her father. The watery eyes proved to be a nice touch, she was surprised she could perform under these conditions.

Clark barked a laugh at the sight of the princess' pouting face. "Is 'at what you do to get what you want, girly?" He asked, tears in his eyes from how hard she tried. "Is this child's play to you?" He added as he shook his head. It was the lady's maid that annoyed him more; at least the princess could shut up. He gestured to Gerard to deal with the serving girl, but paused when he realized that he was still hurt from the fight.

Clark cursed, looking around for a piece of cloth, and ripped a piece from one of the princess' dresses to sop up some of the blood. Maybe lace and silk wasn't the best to deal with a wound like this. He called out to one of his men to treat the wounded, saying that there was probably something that could help him out. The men looked at each other like they were lost, they haven't been on such a grand ship much like this. With a sigh, he gestured to the serving lady to help treat Gerard.

"Do it and I'll consider your freedom," Clark mused, waving her out with him. "If you try to kill 'im, or poison 'im, you won't ever see the light of day," he threatened, telling some of the men to accompany them to keep an eye. The others started to haul some of the princess' belongings onto their ship. "Keep some of 'em dresses, I'm sure li'l miss here would retch at the sight of wearing something of ours."

Ariel shook her head at Rose's actions. 'Why is she so calm like this? What a stupid, littl-' Her thoughts were interrupted by a push from one of Clark's men. She kept staring at them with murderous looks. When the captain urged her to treat their wounded, she almost screamed in defiance but then quieted down at the mention of her freedom. "How can I trust a pirate?" she muttered to herself as she was prodded by some of the men to find cleaning supplies.

She made her way to where there were more supplies, and some of the men helped themselves while she looked for the medicine chest that the king provided for them just in case his daughter came down with some sort of ailments. Being cooped up in one room for so long proved to be helpful in this case. Ariel opened it to find bottles of oils and clean linens and such. She also found a needle and thread to sew it closed, if needed. Enough to treat a wound, but she slightly hoped an illness would get Gerard and somehow spread to the rest of the crew.

"Well, I've never really wanted for much..." Rose mused out loud, realizing it was quite true. She was still alive, when they could have struck her down, perhaps this ruffian realized that it was worth it to keep her unmolested and in one piece. Surely they would just ransom her for a tidy sum and she would be returning to her future husband. They would have to see the reason in that, right?

She wanted to protest the commandeering of her ladies maid to help out the man who had near broken her wrist, but she thought better of it. She looked tot he tender flesh, it was red and she was sure would bruise, which would not do to meet with her husband to be. Perhaps she could cover it with some of the beautiful bangles she had been gifted. That is if she still had any jewelry left after these men were done. Thankfully they hadn't found the small chest, which was tucked away in a drawer under the bed. Fancy mew at her and pawed at her skirts, she picked up the small frightened animal.

She watched Ariel ushered away and frowned, a lady should not be left alone with these men, it wasn't proper. She wanted to demand they leave, but they didn't look like they'd obey her command. A strongly worded letter would be in order, the King would take care of them. Her stomach growled, reminding her that the dinner meal had come and gone. "I don't suppose some food would be an absurd request?" Her attempt at a coy smile failed, she wasn't practiced in the art like many of the other ladies at court. As a princess she didn't have many opportunities to seduce men.

===

Gerard grinned, well he couldn't have the princess, but the feisty one might just do. He held the lacy fabric to his chest, stopping the blood for the moment. As the woman gathered supplies he tore off his blood stained shirt, the gash was large but not too deep, the edges clean. Blood still seemed to gush from it, he felt the effects but didn't let it show. It wouldn't do to look weak, either in front of the woman or the other men. Perhaps it would be needing stitches, a slightly painful prospect, but he didn't care overly much. A number of scars already littered his chest, arms and back, proof of his many battles. He wasn't all that old, but he had been fighting since he was about ten years old.

He founded a stool and plopped down on it. "Fetch me some ale before you begin, and not the cheap shit." Nothing like a drink to numb him up. He watched as the rest of the men dug through crates, coming and going as they took stuff up to the main deck, ready to be transferred to their ship. This ship was far nicer than they one he called home, far larger as well, sadly they didn't have the crew to man it properly. A shame to burn it, really, but who was he to argue? It's what they did.

Clark's mind reverted back to food once the princess mentioned it. He realized he hadn't eaten in a while and wanted nothing more than just a good piece of meat to eat. He figured that the women could cook for them, although he couldn't be half-assed to check them for poisons on their person. The last thing he wanted to deal with was an epidemic among his men. He ordered some of his men to get the women cooking, mostly on this ship since they wouldn't have much back on his ship. Clark could take this ship for himself but going against The Dreaming Serpent sounded more like suicide to him. He and the ship have gone through thick and thin already.

The most he could do to the ship is get most of its treasures for himself.

Clark was about to turn to ask Gerard what to do but he realized that he wasn't in the room with him. With a small sigh, he ordered the rest of the men to procure some food for them to feast on, and cook the rest, before they left the ship. He offered a hand to the princess and said, "Will you care to join me?" His voice was almost mocking, maybe even hoping that she would come to her senses once she sees the destruction outside created by him and his men.

Ariel kept her mouth shut at Gerard's order, picking up a bottle of ale from the stash that the sailors kept for themselves. The king usually send watered down ale for people of his stature to enjoy, cheating them out of their money. They would probably work for someone like the princess' size, but for the usual ale drinker, they wouldn't do jack shit. Ariel was able to find the secret stash only a few hours after they left port. The sailors didn't care for where they stored it; most of the upper class were stuck in their rooms for the most part.

She came over to Gerard with a bucket of water, the supplies she needed, and some ale. Before she gave the bottle to him, Ariel opened it and took a swig for herself. She also poured some over the wound, hoping to clean it out, and maybe start up some pain before she fixed it up. "Here," Ariel muttered, handing the bottle to him as she dabbed at the wound with a piece of cloth.

So the captain was willing to be kind, at least a bit to her? Rose was pleased when he ordered his men to begin preparations on food. Perhaps it would be even quicker, since she was sure the cook had been in the middle of the meal before this all happened. Hopefully the brutes didn't take her meal, though. As a princess she wasn't expected to eat just anything, she had the best meats, vegetables, and anything else she wanted. Just last night she had roast pheasant, and berry tarts for dessert. Of course she was warned the meals would become less elaborate as they continued on their journey, the stores unable to last too long, but it was still expected for her to eat well.

"Ah, so you've seen the reason in treating me kindly." Rose murmured as she took his hand, not catching the mocking tone. Why would she? Never in her life had people done anything but adore her, because those who didn't adore her made it nowhere near her. She knew little about hatred, jealousy, or any of the evils of men. It was because of this she was not in a panic, not begging for her life, not understand that this man and his crew could truly do her harm.

===

Gerard watch her, a bit wary of her intentions. She couldn't do him much harm with a needle, and he would refuse to drink any and all potions, so he was sure he was safe enough, but he didn't trust her all the same. Before he could take the ale she had poured some on the wound on his chest, it burned and he hissed, muttering a curse under his breath. "You wench." Though there was no malice, no anger. He had known it would hurt, but she seemed to perhaps take pleasure from that fact, not warning him beforehand.

He cursed himself, angry at having gotten the wound in the first place. How had one of those sad excuses for a guard gotten the better of him? He wasn't sure, but it didn't matter much now, considering they were all dead. He took a swig of the ale, surprised to find it wasn't watered down crap, as well as intrigued that the woman hadn't even made a face at it. Obviously she was well acquainted with ale. He could only study her while she worked, she was pretty enough, he supposed, not from these parts, obviously, but a fine looking woman. Perhaps the captain would allow him a bit of fun with her before they tossed her overboard.

The ale felt warm and he sighed, content for the moment, before she started the real torture. "Like what you see?" He asked with a grin, raising an eye brow at her as he attempted to flex his arms. Sure he wasn't the most handsome man, but he had no problem with women, even though most of them were little more than whores.

Clark could only raise an eyebrow as she took his hand. Maybe she still didn't get it, but no matter. This whole ordeal will probably be a life lesson for her, depending if she'll live to see the next day. He led her through the hallways, where there were still women milling about, not sure what to do now that the rest of the guards are gone. He shook his head. "Ladies," he gestured to the steps, "you can either come on a pirate ship, where your ends will be unknown or you can jump overboard." A few of them looked at each other and started muttering to themselves how Clark was kind enough to give them a choice rather than the men they've met. With a nod, he left them, princess still in hand.

His men were finishing up on the treasure haul, now it was the supplies. The rest of his crew were pretty jolly still, despite the wounds and cuts they had and Clark nodded to a few of them as he led the princess through the carnage on deck.

"Here's a plank," he pointed out, a big piece of wood serving as a bridge between the royal ship and his. "Uhh, never mind those," Clark nodded towards the dead bodies on the ship. "I'm sure they've served a full life," he joked, biting the inside of his mouth. He never meant to be insensitive towards the dead, but now those words were out there.

"I hope you're not afraid of heights. Or open water, for that matter."

Ariel bit back a smile as Gerard cursed her for the poured ale. She shook her head at herself, why was she inherently happy at all this? People are now dead, and now the future seemed distant and unknown. She thought she would only spend the rest of her life waiting on Rose's every order, maybe take care of her child when the wedding was done and all. Maybe she realized that she didn't want to do this for the rest of her life. Biting the inside of her lip, she put all her focus into treating his wound, hopefully thinking that this would gain favor with the captain.

Maybe she wouldn't mind a life on the sea. Provided she was safe. Safe. Ariel wondered if Rose was safe. Given the captain's attitude toward her, he would probably use her for ransom and then dump her wherever. With that mindset, he wouldn't dare do anything to her. She smirked. 'I guess her title does her good now,' Ariel thought as she started to thread some string through a needle. The wound was cleaned up, for the most part. All she had to do was sew it back together and bandage it to prevent it from bleeding again. This was simple enough, at least she wouldn't have to deal with broken bones or such.

At Gerard's comment, Ariel raised an eyebrow. "Oh yes, so handsome," she replied with a biting tone. She pierced his skin by the time she ended her comment and began to sew through his skin.

Rose obediently followed him, not sure she had too much of an option. Where could he be taking her? She watched his interaction with the other women, curious and a bit afraid. Why would he insist they go on his ship? No, they should be staying on this ship, with her, until the King comes and gets them. She frowned and was going to ask him about it, but they were on the deck. Her slippered feet nearly slipped, failing to get traction on the blood soaked good. All around her she could see the carnage, the destruction.

A gasp escaped her and she pulled her hand from his, stumbling back until she fell to her bottom. Not wanting to be near the monster she scooted away until her back his the side, the wood digging into her shoulders. How could he think this a joke? Her father's men, people with wives and children, lie dead around her. And for what? Some trinkets and gold?

"You monster."

===

Gerard gulped down the bottle of ale, ready for the pain she was sure to cause him. For a moment he was distracted by her words, caught off guard as the needle pierced his skin. The alcohol hadn't done enough to numb it and he cursed loudly, barely stopping himself from kicking her away from him. "Aye, lass, next time give a man a warnin'." He said through gritted teeth, gripping the sides of the stool he sat on, the empty bottle of ale dropping to the ground and rolling across the wooden planks.

Now the ale was kicking in and his head began to swim. The drunken stupor, coupled with the pain, was not the most ideal condition to be in. He looked down at his chest as she worked, lost as she moved the needle through his skin. By now it felt numb, he could only feel a slight tugging with each stitch.

He had to admit the sight of her doing it was much better than that of he grisly old man who served as the ships doctor and cook. He doubted the man had any real medical training, considering his solution was a stiff drink and to sleep most every thing off. A fever? Bitter cough until you puked. Most men died under his care.

Too bad he couldn't keep her on, she'd make a lovely addition to his cabin. The thought made him grin, yeah, he wouldn't mind coming back to this. Not that Clark would agree. No, they didn't take prisoners. Still, might as well enjoy the next few hours before she was likely shoved off the gangplank into the ocean. "Name's Gerard, how about you, lovely?" His words were a bit slurred, he always tended to be a bit of a flirt when drunk. It ran in the family, he supposed.

Clark's eyes lit up. "Now, now, they fought back. I just merely stepped on to see what they had in store." He leaned down, his face close to hers. "We only pillage those who see fit. You won't see any other pirate with such morals." He had to stop himself from laughing a bit, maybe he was being a little bit too harsh but he couldn't stand royalty and how they thought they were higher than anyone else just due to their birthright. 'At least work for your status,' that is what he would say.

"Come on princess. It's either come with me or die," Clark warned, his voice a low rumble. The treasure they acquired from the ship would be definitely enough for him but when was the last time he pushed the limits? He wanted to see where his capture of the princess would go, making sure that his or his crew's lives weren't in total danger. If only Gerard was there to advise him a little.

Once Ariel was able to get into a rhythm, her attention was to Gerard. Drinking with the adrenaline still pimping through his veins from the fight probably wasn't the best idea, but she almost envied him. She wished she could just drink and forget about what they were going through, maybe she could get good word to Gerard and probably do some favors to the rest of the crew to ensure her freedom. Her mind snapped back to reality and what she was doing; she had gone halfway through the wound and stopped, stuck in her mind.

"Sorry," she muttered and went on to finish her work. At his question, she smirked. "It's Ariel," she simply answered before stopping off the thread. The gash was all sewn up, and she reached for the roll of cloth to wrap around his torso. "No excessive movement," Ariel suggested, finishing off with washing her hands in the bucket. "Lest you want the stitches to burst open again." She stood up and stretched a bit, shaking her head. "Listen to me, sounding like one of 'em doctors."

Rose said nothing, crossing her arms like a child, forcing up the tight bodice, which seemed to have lost the lace insert she often wore for modesty. Her father wouldn't be pleased to find that she was pouting like a bratty child, but she felt it was needed in a situation like this. Why would she want to go anywhere with this vile man? He wouldn't dare kill her, no he would be like the rest of the greedy people, begging the king for money in exchange for her. Father would pay, of course, she was his princess, his only daughter. Perhaps if the fool played his cards right he could even get some money from the prince, her future husband. Not that she'd give him that bit of information.

"I suppose you'll just have to kill me." She huffed and turned away, trying to hide the small quiver in her lips. Would he take her seriously and go through with it? Tears threatened to spill over at the thought of never seeing her family again. No, she couldn't cry in front of him, couldn't give him the satisfaction. No matter where she tried to look all she could see was the dead, the blood of those sent to protect her. She could smell it, mixed with the salty air, and it made her want to gag.

===

Gerard grunted in reply, it almost sounded like a 'thanks', after having sat completely still and quiet for the rest of her tending. The loss of blood and the large amount of drink was not working out well. He stood and stumbled a bit, struggling to get his footing. "I'm a pirate. Not an idle lord." He grumbled at her, knowing it would be likely he'd break the stitches open before the day was through. They had loot to take aboard the ship, he had tasks to complete, just because he was first mate did not mean he didn't share in the work. Even the captain did.

A few of the other crew members seemed to eye Ariel, and he glared at them until they moved on. "You better watch yourself." It was a warning to her, she wasn't safe with these men. Hell, she wasn't safe with him and he didn't know why he bothered warning her. What could she do to stop them?

He stumbled away, slurring a bawdy song under his breath, his hands groping at the walls for support. He had to find the captain, and some fresh air. That should help. It wasn't like him to really be drunk, he was more than capable of handling himself, but perhaps he had lost more blood than he thought. He could a dull ache in his chest and knew it would only get worse. Good thing he had a stash of the good stuff in his cabin back on the ship. He turned back, just before leaving the store room, "Come on then, be a goo' lass n' help me up these stairs."

Clark laughed to himself. "Oh no, girly. We're not done with ye." He looked around, pretty content with the fact that most of his men were back on his ship already, the royal one almost stripped clean. He gestured to one of his other men to set the ship to sink as he watched Gerard slink up the stairs with the serving girl at his side. Lucky man. Might need a while to tame her, though. But as they say, fruit of their labors or whatnot.

"It's time to leave, your majesty," he mocked as he grabbed her by the wrist and hauled her across the plank. He could smell the cooked food wafting from the kitchens, his stomach growling at the prospect. Whatever was left of his men did away with the ship, breaking away at its foundation and leaving it to sink to the depths. His ships' sails were up and they were soon off, Clark could only take the princess to his chambers, where he invited Gerard with them in order to eat. "And bring in whomever else," he noted, eyeing the girl still at his side and giving him a firm clap on the shoulder.

The food was brought in to a large wooden table, enough to fit numerous men, and the rest was distributed throughout the crew outside, who began to drink in the (unfortunately) watery ale and feast. It was enough to sustain them for a while, if the men didn't go overboard.

Seeing Gerard losing his footing is almost comical, if Ariel could see past the fact that he was unraveling what was her best work tending to the wounded yet. At his suggestion to watch himself, she shook her head. "I can look after m'self fine," she mused, shooting sharp eyes to the rest of the men who dared look at her. She almost forgot about her predicament and thought that she was back at home, back at some old tavern which she stumbled upon from time to time when she wasn't tending to Rose. Rose. She almost forgot about her.

Ariel put one of Gerard's arms across her shoulders, never minding her proximity to him. It was obvious that he was in need of help. "That ale was a bad idea," she commented, hauling him up the steps and out to the deck, where she finally saw the carnage that he and his crew created. She almost locked knees and fell, the stench of blood was almost too much. She was never this close to death; it almost reminded her of when she was young.

"Mum..." she whispered, the ghosts of her past emerging in her vision. Ariel almost fell to the ground in horror, if it wasn't for Rose's voice piercing through her thoughts.

Rose had wanted to fight, to kick and scream and carry on, but that wasn't how a princess behaved. It also didn't help that he had grabbed the same wrist that his brute of a friend had earlier, tears sprung to her eyes as he pressed on the tender flesh. It would surely bruise by the morning.

It wasn't until they were already across the gangplank that she noticed he was about to sink her ship. This was where she tried to dig in her heels, stalling him. "Please, please don't sink the ship. My stuff is still in my cabin..." Tears now streamed down her face. When she was forced into what she figured to be his cabin, she threw herself to the floor at his feet. "Fancy. My kitten... she is but a baby. You can't let her drown. And my dresses, I shall need something to wear." Should she tell him about the jewels, it might make him more likely to go back if he could have those. If it saved Fancy, it was worth it.

"I've hidden a small chest of jewelry in there, which escaped your men's notice. Promise you'll bring back Fancy and I'll tell you where they are..." Princess's didn't often beg, but she knew no other choice. The food was brought in yet she couldn't eat, not knowing her poor baby was alone without her. She didn't know they had set sail, that it was too late.

===

"Ale is never a bad idea." Gerard grumbled at her, just before the captain came into view. It looked like they were mostly done with the ship, he noticed the order to sink it. They had stumbled upon a good haul today, for more than one reason. He could see Clark with the princess, watched as he hauled her across to their ship. He almost drooled at the prospect of the gold they would get when they ransomed the pretty princess back to her father. He looked to Ariel when she seemed to stop, they didn't have time, they needed to get to the other ship before this one sunk while they still stood on its deck.

He noticed all her bravery and valor fell apart at the sight of the carnage on deck. He didn't let her fall to her knees, "Such is life, lass." He grunted and stumbled forward, all but dragging her to the gangplank and across. It was slow going, he didn't want to lose his footing and he admitted that his head was a bit foggy from the ale.

"Ye have two choices, come with me, or take your chances wi' these men out here." If she was smart, she would choose him. He was too drunk and tired at this point to do much of anything, not that he'd admit it to her.

Clark looked back at her, almost with sympathy, as Rose talked about the small ball of fur that Gerard had kicked earlier. "Your highness, it's too late," he muttered, gesturing to the ship that already buckled halfway through the water. His ship already went underway, fast enough that the royal ship was only but a dot a few minutes after. "I'm sure we have enough clothes for you, and for your...Fancy, you named it?" He shuffled. "It'll just be a nuisance. Sorry if this ship doesn't compare to yours," he shrugged.

The food brought out to them was hot, steaming, and a lot better than what they've been eating the past few weeks. Motioning for Gerard to sit down, he started to dig in. "You better get some food in ya," he commented.

"I'll come with you," Ariel answered, without missing a beat. She cleared her throat and proceeded to help carry him towards wherever he wanted. This was to be her plan: to get close to whomever was in charge (or close to it anyway) and to ensure her safety that way. Maybe they could come across Indonesia on their travels, but that was just stretching to too far. At least she could probably sneak away to some port. That life would mean that she would have to be alone, and she was always under the care of someone from the higher class at least.

They were able to get across the plank, and Ariel could see the ship behind them sink at the corner of her eye. At least she didn't have much of her belongings to begin with, and there were other ways she could make clothes for herself if she needed to. She saw Rose in front of her, poorly treated for someone of her stature at least. She felt sudden fear and sadness hit her, and Ariel realized that Rose would do poorly in these situations. She was only but a child.

"Will you let me tend to her at least?" she said, gesturing to the poor princess in front of her. Rose looked like she was on the verge of tears.

Rose wanted to sob, to throw herself to the ground and scream out nasty names at him, but she couldn't bring herself to do it. Silent tears streamed down her face, she had been so happy when Fancy had been presented to her, a new companion for her in her new life. She had never truly had a a pet of her own before, her mother wasn't fond of cats, and the dogs belonged to her father. They stunk anyways, and she didn't want much to do with them.

Holding her sore wrist in her hand she sat at the table but didn't bother to touch the food. She felt like she never wanted to eat again, couldn't eat again as she remembered the blood and horror, and the miserable end to the poor kitten who had barely lived to a few months. The idea that he could eat after what he did made her want to gag, threatening to lose what little was left in her stomach. No matter how hard she tried she couldn't stop the tears, couldn't control herself despite the years of practicing in doing exactly that.

Ariel had asked to tend to her, but nothing would help. It was about more than a few dresses, jewels, and a cat. Everything she owned sank with that ship, including now her innocence. Who would believe that she would escape this order unharmed? Unmolested? None. She would be lucky if the prince wanted anything to do with her at this point. All her life she had been told to avoid any situation that might compromise her, she was nothing without her innocence, yet even while she obey every rule, did everything right, it didn't matter. Would her father even want her back now? This train of thought only made the tears flow faster.

"The captain will handle that, best not to get in his way, lass." Gerard muttered quietly to Ariel before sitting down at the table. The meal looked delicious and he dove in, hopefully it would work well to soak up the ale and gain his strength back. He needed to be in top shape if he was to be prepared for what might come. Capturing the princess was easy, keeping her until they got their gold would be the hard part.

It was easy enough for him to ignore the young girls tears, she was crying over a cat and dresses, all of which her father could easily replace a hundred times over when she returned to him. Women. He'd never understand them. "Good food." He said through a mouthful, having not had anything so delicious in quite a long time. It wouldn't do to get used to this, it wasn't practical, fresh meats and what not, it involved visiting ports far too often, something they didn't do. Well, unless they felt like getting caught.

He couldn't wait to find out what exactly they had gotten today. Hopefully the princess was lying about the jewels being hidden, he'd hate to think of such lovely treasures sitting at the bottom of the ocean. The dresses and useless trinkets were of no good to him, unless the fine materials could be sold for a pretty profit, but many of the gifts were made of gold or had polished jewels. The crew would live well off of this haul, and they had the little weeping princess and her father to thank for it.
